This is an Excellent Tutorial on Joining Clients to Domains on Private networks. I wish this included some vision on what the settings were on the router, so I could better understand where he got some of the numbers, But he stated that those were correct anyways. Thank you!
I didn't think it would work. It did. I was setting up the server offline for a project in class and could not connect it to the school's domain or else it would crash it. The problem was that the DNS server was set to the default so it was trying to reach out to the internet for a DNS instead of local. I set the DNS to the server and it worked. Thanks so much!!!
Thanks alot dude, I'm banging my head with this from last two days. At initially i thought you gonna do same as me but you showed the exact problem where it lies.. This is awesome :-D
You need to decide what network they will be on and that will dictate what addresses you will give them. If they are VMs running from your personal computer or even an ESXI server, then whatever network your computer connects to can also be the network that the server and Win7 hosts can connect to. You can start with the auto configuration (DHCP clients) and see what addresses they are automatically assigned. Run and ipocnfig /all and look for your IPv4 host address, gateway and dns addresses
@fcknkllr I would think you would be able to ping the domain name if everything is working correctly and you set your DNS server settings to the Windows server's ip address. You did promote your server to a Domain Controller? Have you gone into the server's DNS administrative tool and checked to see if DNS is running? Try restarting the DNS server and reloading the forward lookup zone for the domain.
dam i was stuck there for hours i thought i had to put there the ip of the dns lol but it was the ip of my server thx! it worked! i used win 2008 server with windows xp.
Wow nice and slow... and it worked for me. I have a situation where I am building a new domain in the same Network ID as an existing DC (Windows 2003). I merely changed the DNS on my client PC to the new DC. It let me join. Might want to check the network group your DC is in... make sure it's Work/Private and not public. Otherwise turn off firewalls to check that it's not blocking DNS requests.
The one thing people need to understand is that Windows 7 Professional and above (Ultimate, and Enterprise) can ONLY join domains. Home Premium, or Starter can't join.
I have a laptop that I joined to my domain at work by simply going to rename pc and changing from Workgroup to domain, then I entered my domain and it just worked. I just bought a new dell laptop and that's the first thing I tried to do and I am getting that error message. The details says something about "This computer is configured to use DNS servers with the following IP addresses:" and shows a couple of IPs. These IPs are the same that I see when i do _ipconfig /all_ on my old computer that works. I have no idea what this message means and how to fix it. I'm not a network guy, I'm a dev. Do you have any tips for troubleshooting this? I tried disabling all firewalls and AV software. Nothing works. thanks Note - I am using wifi for both PCs. And on both PCs, when I go to the properties of my wi-fi adapters and ipv4 settings, they show automatic for both sections. In other words, I see no difference in settings between the one that works and the one that doesn't.
i got an error "An attempt to resolve the dns of a domain controller in the domain being joined has failed. Please verify this client is configured to reach a dns server that can resolve dns names in the target domain." What's goin on here? Where did I probably did something wrong?
HEY i cant log on to my domain controller affter i create it i create win server win 2012 and win 10 after i put the domain name i need to enter user and pass but the administrators account not working for me i try any thing my domain is HOME.local so i try home\administrator or administrator or home.local\administrator nothing work can you please help me to understand what i do worn?
Hawre Khdir basically the AD server needs to be able to resolve the domain name. From your host computer, with its dns server set to the Windows Server's IP address, try to do an nslookup on the domain name you are trying to join and see what happens. I would be interested to see if the server is resolving the domain name.
danscourses thanks for your reply,it works, the reply is like this Server: name of my server address: Ip address of the AD sever Non-authoritative answer name: server name address: AD serve's IP address..
sometimes dns is not same server as the domain controller for instance a samba controller then you need to turn off ipv6 and add two registry keys in order to comunicate with a non active directory domain controller..
I thought it was funny but I plugged in the same IP that Auto had given the Win 7 PC and the gateway and it actually joined the domain. Why did Auto not work? Their the same numbers... Is it because of being private? Thanks this helped me a lot
Hi , I'm having problem joining my svr, I did everything you just mentioned but still not working. can ping and can resolve the dns svr, can nslookup....still same problem joining not sure what to do anymore

Note: all domains are pinged So please give me any solution for this issue. As soon as possible sir.

hey Dan, I have AD server, i got this error even while trying to join a computer to the AD even i changed the DNS to the server IP. any help plz..

danscourses thanks for your reply,it works, the reply is like this
Server: name of my server
address: Ip address of the AD sever
Non-authoritative answer
name: server name
address: AD serve's IP address..
You will need an administrative account to join the domain. Try pinging the domain also to see if the name is being resolved.
Ahhh, good question. If you are trying to join the domain then a domain admin account.
Hawre Khdir I failed in my national certificate because of this error other tutorials live it obtained the client pc
sometimes dns is not same server as the domain controller for instance a samba controller then you need to turn off ipv6 and add two registry keys in order to comunicate with a non active directory domain controller..
thank you
