    Nice video! The T-34 was a 'swarm' tank - effective in huge numbers, losses were replaced by following waves of tanks - to a degree... They put Germany on the back foot by sheer number of operational units, rather than technical or offensive superiority. The T-34 was a legend, and I think it pushed the German hand in a way that they'd never recover from - German resources and the technical complexities of German medium / heavy tanks were such that they could never match T-34 numbers... Sooo, Germany had to go bigger, stronger, more advanced still... and therefore more fallible. The Panther was an excellent tank, and had German medium / heavy production been devoted exclusively to it, the Panther may have swept away Soviet armoured forces with both superior strength and numbers, BUT diluted by Tiger, Tiger II and Jagdtiger production... Germany never had enough of one thing, so that when the Soviets responded to the Tiger and Panther, with the IS-1 and IS-2, Germany was done for - it being merely a matter of time and extended attrition. The IS-2 - with all its crudeness - was such a massively predatorial [rather than en-masse] tank, that King Tiger crews were forbidden from engaging them in anything less than a 3 to 1 ratio. 3854 IS-2 versus 492 King Tigers... 'Endkampf' was a forgone if very bloody and hard fought conclusion. The T-34 laid the ground and turned the war. The IS-2 won the war outright.

    It's a shame that Christie couldnt get his own country to be interested in his suspension system as it was the best going @ the time. At least the Soviets realized just how good the system was & utilized it to great effect. Oddly through Lend Lease we sent the soviets a bunch of Sherman tanks which were easily destroyed by the Germans on the eastern front, unfortunatley there are few pictures or film of them & all the pics i've seen of them were wrecks. The main problem with Soviet tanks IMO is that they were not all equiped w/radios & they would have done much better w/them as a good tank squadron leader would've been able to get his squadron in the right positions to exploit any advantages the superior design of the T34 gained on the feild.

      The U.S Army had some good reason to point out the flaws of the system. It is a nightmare to try fix the suspension if it got damaged, a weight limit on how much armor you need, and the trackwheel hybrid system (how often do you need wheels over tracks?)

      The Israeli Merkava tank is quite a unique tank design (unlike other nations). The suspension is at least inspired by the Centurion, which in turn derived from British cruisers with Christie suspension.

    • @RussianThunderrr
      @RussianThunderrr 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      BHuang92 - Definitely Not! Centurion uses Horstmann bogie suspension. British cruisers tanks are mostly used a Christie suspension. And yes, Merkava is one heck of the odd ball(in a good way) tank.

    The first T-34, encountered by the Germans, was conducting very successful lone tank rampage over several kilometres. It is documented as being ambushed, hit in the side and destroyed by a Skoda FH-14/19(t) 100mm. L.36 field howitzer. According to German evaluation test results, this gun was capable of penetrating over 90mm. of RHA @ 0 degrees @ 500 metres with PzGr.(t) solid shot.

  • @od1452
    @od1452 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks. The T-34M probably would have been the tank that the Germans would have encountered if Barbarossa had started a year or more later. It seems the Russians were impressed with the Panzer III that the Germans gave them before the war. It was an important influence to the improved T-34M design and it appears that the Soviets wanted to produce this model...but of course the war changed that. I find this interesting as it shows the Soviets were quick to see the value of the Panzer III. Because it was out-classed later, we probably don't appreciate how innovating the Panzer III was.

    Have you heard or read anything that T 34's were driven out of the Stalingrad factory UNPAINTED to get them into battle @ Stalingrad asap? I make plastic models and thought of painting one in dirty steel. Thanks for you awesome vids!

    • @Will_Kerrs
      @Will_Kerrs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There’s no solid evidence that this ever happened. Paint was always applied, partly as a means of keeping the vehicle operational, partly as a means of IDing them. Any oral evidence is insufficient proof as oral sources should only be used for their factual information in certain circumstances.

      This kind was produced on very small scale.
      Reason was quite simple, Soviets put very heavy emphasis on ability to lob powerful high-explosive shells and ZiS-4 while having good armor penetration had little explosive filler in its shells to fight against infantry.

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uhm... The British and Americans had tanks superior to the T34 since 1938 already. Especially the Sherman tank had a massive strategic advantage in survival and repair, so much so Russian tankers hoped to get lend-lease Shermans instead of the Russian deathtraps that in case of the T34 suffered 10-15% losses before they were even in firing range.
      Wow... 3-4 of your friends dead before you can even take the first shot... How bad is that?
      No wonder German manuals talked about the T34 and KV1 as, and I quote "Effect mostly psychological. Combat effectiveness very low"
