    Music theory is like the grammar of a language, notes and chords are like words, rhythm is like sentences. I think music theory is vital if you want to actually understand what you're doing.

    I wish I understood that 35 years ago. I only started to learn MT recently and it makes so much sense and really does help you. You can learn a lot without theory and many do and actually write good music. But if you struggle at all, knowing a little will help so much. It helps you understand the patterns and the possibilities that can be frustrating when you are winging it. Some people hear and put the patterns to work without even thinking about it, but for me I had a hard time understand why some things sounded good and others didn't until I learned some scales and practiced them and applied them to my own writing and looking at music I played from other bands. It all started to make sense.

    Theory has helped me so much. More the earlier stuff than concepts like voice-leading, but even just learning the pentatonic scales helps a lot, in case the circle of fifths is too overwhelming. While guitarists are at a disadvantage with note reading, we don't have to deal with the bass clef or flats all that much. Piano is also great to learn alongside guitar as the note reading is very straight forward and can make composing a bit easier.

  • @simonminay5177

    Shred, this is a lovely explanation....but not everyone can hear those half tones different from whole tones. I'm ok (with perfect pitch) so I know my keys inside out but loads of folk have to work this out the hard way. I've always thought that teaching the modes works better but, I know already, you've been teaching this already in former videos. Major & minor really suck because they don't cover the full musical harmonic range. This is exactly why Bach is such a good example of using all the modes in his harmonic progressions...there isn't really any major or minor, just fleeting visits through certain keys until he settles on the key he started in, Picardy ending or not! They just say they're Major or minor because that's the key they started & ended in. I love your approach to teaching music ...almost makes me want to buy a guitar! 😀 ...I'm a middle aged pianist so it will take me some convincing...

    • @KitWriter
      @KitWriter 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @rustiecagefun fact, perfect pitch is extremely rare. Many have great pitch. As a drummer, I can hear when my guitarist has a G or B string out of tune when they hit a Barre chord - those are his only two that go out because he bends them the most with his playing style.
      I can hear when a guitar is in tune with itself, and when something is out, But I cannot hum any note on command. Meanwhile, my HS friend had the FREAKY ability to hear me play a syncopation on my drums, and do a fill all the way around the set, then exclaim, “your 2nd rack tom is D!” Then walk over to the Casio and touch a key and it would be exactly perfect to that rack tom.
      That kid had perfect pitch. He went to Berkley and won an award for being the first Freshmen to win the dean’s award for best composed symphony. Tony Maltino. But, other than him, I have never met someone with perfect pitch, because it is just that rare.

    Learning theory will stunt my creativity in the same way learning to weld properly will make ships less”interesting”.
    Truth is I would put more time in if I was 14 and starting again,right now it’s not my number 1 priority,it’s just enjoying playing along to the stuff I like.HOWEVER there’s a BIG bunch of people that don’t want you to learn because they know they’re frauds.Theres a lot of average people that hide in the arts simply because it IS subjective.Its easier to wear some strange clothes and say your art isn’t about other people it’s about you, rather than face up to you might just not have anything special to say.Working really hard at the tools to allow you expression is a real problem because you might find out all you’ve got to say once you can,is nothing.You end up Kirk hammet.But at least Kirk hammet stood up and he DID give us the solo unforgiving and a fair few others that seriously say something

    What notes that will summon the dead 😈

    • @KitWriter
      @KitWriter 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Necromancy scale. You need a harp or two guitarists playing several tritones together perfectly, in the middle of a pentacle or pentagram made out of candle wax, encircled by lit candles made from the most raven-hued shade of black, using mystical wicks that make the flame burn purple, with a black light spotlight on the portal spot. If you are missing any ingredient, you can substitute that with a female virgin but she has to be “legally of age” in that country / area.
      Why? Because many demons were lawyers in their past life. 😎

    • @KitWriter
      @KitWriter 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Basically, any tritone notes that are a shade of black so void-bringing that Anish Kapoor could not be in the circle because he would try to sue, claiming they are too close to resembling Vantablack ™️

    How many people can look at this stuff, listen to it, and just BAM! get it? I love music, but it's as foreign to me as Chinese. From the start of the video, I was confused by 0:02, and just stayed that way. I understood your name, and nothing else. I'm a mechanical guy, an engineer, problem-solver, great with spatial relationships, horsepower, and forged steel. Creativity, ESPECIALLY musical, is not in my DNA. You could point me to a lumber yard, and I could build you a house, but I couldn't paint you a picture, sing a song, or play an instrument if there was a gun to my head. I AM a creative writer, having received some minor accolades. Other than that, if it isn't 3,500 PSI or made with explosive-reactive armor, I'm lost. Is there any hope for me, or is it truly something you are born with? Everyone in my family is musical but me, every one of them playing instruments, singing in bands or barbershop quartets. Is a guitar a lost cause for me? Actually, I want to play the hauntingly beautiful violin. Is there hope for me, or am I a snake trying to juggle?

    • @NegativeROG
      @NegativeROG 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @rustiecage I can HEAR very well. I can sing (terribly) every lyric on entire albums, I can air drum or air guitar entire albums, but when the rubber meets the road, I'm an absolute tragedy. Not a little, I'm a 400-car pileup with as many deaths.

    • @KitWriter
      @KitWriter 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Play the guitar strings without fretting anything.
      3rd fret is a third up.
      Now, go up to the 5th fret. That’s a fifth up from the root note.
      Go up to the 7th. That is a 7th. Go to the 12th fret. That is an octave. (So, a C, one octave up, is a higher C note.).
      I’m a drummer and I am also still learning. It helps when you do this stuff with a guitar of your own IN HAND. I don’t learn by reading or listening. I learn by DOING.
      Playing along with him is how I learn.
