ryobi 18v mower quick preview

  • few other things to mention. I didn't want to make a quick 'preview' vid an hour long, so here you go...
I did have to order this off their website and wait a bit. The clerk said these weren't normally in stock. It did take a few weeks to get.
I went with 18v because those are the batteries I had. If you have 40v, go with the 40v model. I also wanted replaceable batteries because I don't want to be stuck with a mower that doesn't have easily replaceable batteries that aren't batteries that I know and trust. (eg a really good, replaceable, lifepo4)
The reviews had mentioned they were under powered and have horrible battery life.
*I don't find them to be underpowered at all*, and even a 4ah battery as long as you aren't trying to mow down a jungle will still go for around ~5 min or longer which is enough for a tiny front yard to keep the HOA zombies away.
This was only a 'preview' and it was hotter than hades outside so I at least wanted to show you that they do in fact run when it's that hot. I've ran it outside, switching through batteries as I go, for around an hour outside with my combined collection of batteries with no issues, and I plan on really stress testing it once I get two, 12mah's with the 'cooling technology' soon, if anyone cares. I suspect that will make a huge difference, and save my other batteries.
A few things like I've talked about in my podcasts. The more ah (amp hours) you have in your batteries when it's hot out, the more 'overhead' you have, because even running them under heavy load, they seem to have more life to them, so they cut off at half, and half of 6ah is more than half of 4ah...
Also this was using the mulch plug, not a bag, so mulching obviously takes extra work on that tall grass and it was still effortlessly going right through it.
I also like the thin profile of this mower, it's also extremely light, and it isn't self propelling. Thinner you might think, you get less done, but I can get in and around my bushes really easily that way without worrying if I'm mowing something I don't want to. Also it has a really thin profile nose which allows me to get up under the slumped over grass.
So in summary, at that heat, with a 6mah battery, with that height of grass, I could have probably done about 10 minutes at a really steady clip. Then I go put the battery in the shade to cool down so it doesn't get ruined. I carry an extra in my pocket too so that reduces running back and forth, and the other batteries stay in the shade for me to grab, and it works really well.
Also, I've ran this thing through way, way, way more than its rated for and It always gets back up and keeps going. It feels very very well built, like they knew people were going to go overboard with it. It isn't flimsy by any stretch. Very happy w this little trooper. Hollar if you want a full review someday, or if you have questions.

ah thank you for the comment! yes I agree. I think before I do a full review on this thing, I need a gopro, because if I keep trying this with my phone I think the lawnmower is going to eat it. :( then I'll be in big trouble.

hey thanks, yeah, it doesn't weigh anything and if you already have ryobi 18v batteries laying around, it's kind of a no brainer

The grass looks more like a hay feild then normal grass & those mowers really don't do good in that tall of grass After it is cut it needs a good raking then mowed again !

He has ALOT of grass, so he really needs a riding lawn mower *wink wink* ;) But I do agree, it is ALOT like hay and feels like hay. :/
