John Cleese joins the BFI’s Dick Fiddy to reflect on influential TV comedy series At Last the 1948 Show. The pair discusses the rediscovery of episodes that were previously thought lost, the 1960s satire boom and collaborators including Graham Chapman, Marty Feldman and David Frost.

Glad to hear John praising Stephen Leacock. He is a brilliant humourist well worth seeking out. There is a great story about Groucho Marx touring with Jack Benny in the 1920’s. Whenever Groucho walked past Benny’s room he could hear laughter and assumed he had company. One night he knocks on the door and finds Benny reading Sunshine Sketches Of A Small Town. Groucho became a huge fan as well.

Cleese would never be able to tell these stories on American talk shows. He would keep getting cut off, the hosts would be trying to take back the spotlight from him or there would be 10 commercial breaks.

The 'Beekeeper sketch' from the 1948 Show is now available on TH-cam, in case if anyone's wondering.

Two more episodes have been found that are not on the DVDs.
Watched the DVDs last night. The shirts sketch is very good and is probably the closest we get to Chapman and Cleese both acting as they did in Python. Great slapstick by Cleese in the life insurance sketch. The story we sometimes hear about the Python sketch "Take Your Pick" being from "1948" is wrong: In the "1948" game show Cleese does show them where their marks are and is a jerk, but it's a different (worse) sketch.
I was surprised to find that "1948" wasn't better, worse, or much different in style from "Do Not Adjust Your Set."

I watched the show when it came out and bought the soundtrack album. Can't wait to get the new restored DVD set.

"It's funny but they won't get it in Bradford..."
Like what they used to say in NYC when a new stage show was about to go on the road: "It's gonna bomb in Peoria."

Not funny at all...the only funny thing Cleese did was change his name from Cheese To Cleese..now that in my mind is funny😂😂😂
