    I dont think the systems broken, i dont think we should let the name of the whiskey take away from rating it fairly. Ive never tried it, its most likely an amazing product, but at $2000 and if the oakiness is really as overpowering as you say, then so be it. The scoring system is turning out to be more of a value system, which isnt a bad thing. Ill take the thing that is available and affordable but not as good tasting over something like this that is over priced despite it being a better whiskey.

    • @mhedden033
      @mhedden033 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I agree with this, as is the current system is more of a value rating than purely juice rating. But you have all the inputs needed if you wanted to create a secondary list constructed from an equation which omits value/availability and adds some weight to the other categories.

      It can’t even be that good it’s all hype that has it priced at what it is, remember is wasn’t always hard to find a super expensive. A lot of times people tell themselves they love the taste of something or that it’s good even if it’s not.

    Availability score is low because you can't find it commonly at MSRP.
    Value, then, could be based purely off MSRP, as secondary market prices are, typically, going to be reflected in whiskeys with low Availability scores.

    I have no doubt that Pappy Van Winkle 15 is an incredible bourbon, but I could never justify paying $2,000 or more for a bottle when Weller Antique 107 is available for less than $200. I once had a bottle of the PVW 15yo, and quite enjoyed it, but have to note that this was before it all exploded. As it became harder to find and more of a collector bourbon, the cost began to outweigh the actual taste, notably for the 20yo. I cannot under any circumstances justify paying 2 grand for a bottle of bourbon when so much great bourbon is out there at reasoned and reasonable cost. BTW, I am truly impressed you could tell it was a Weller from the get-go!

    I think the rating system is pretty good, and, if anything, you could lower the percentage of the availability. Scoring it solely on the whiskey itself (i.e. removing availability score entirely) may have some merit to it, but I don't think it's necessary. I opened up your Barrell Bourbon barrel pick, and it was fantastic! I hope you're able to keep doing barrel picks. That's a really cool thing to do!

    Almost nine years ago to the day (4/17/2014), I hunted down a pour of Pappy for my 21st birthday. I got one of the middle-aged ones at 10 years, iirc. Cost me $125 for a double in Washington DC. It's absolutely the best bourbon I've ever tried, I get the hype... but I do not get the price tag. I didn't get it then, I don't get it now. I've seen how the price has risen ever more exponentially, as well. There are other bourbons that are damn near as good that can be had for much, much less. Pappy has become a bourbon collector status symbol, which is ironic because if you hear old timers talk about it, they talk of the days when Pappy was the best $75-$150 whiskey money could buy. It used to be top shelf, but not prohibitively expensive. Guess the secret got out.

    I recently got to try a Pappy flight at a speakeasy in Chicago for a reasonable price. They offered the Old RIP Van Winkle 10-year 107 proof, the Van Winkle 12-year special reserve, and the Pappy Van Winkle 15 family reserve all for $57. The 12 was probably my favorite of the 3 but I can definitely say none of them were worth the $1k-$2300 plus price tag on the bottle. For the price the tasting was worth it to find that information out.

Although Buffalo Trace is making an excellent version of Pappy, the bottle I had that was 100% Stitzel-Weller juice was absolutely the best. The same goes for Old Weller 107. Around 1978 it was $19/bottle and better than any bourbon I had ever tasted back then and right up there with the Pappy 15 I bought in '97.

    PVW15 is around $1800 now and a damn good pour. But the 12 year Lot B is the sweet spot for Pappy at about half the price. Skip the 20 & 23 year expressions. They don’t live up to the hype nor the price.
    And if you like the 12 & 15, give Weller SiB a shot. At $600 for a bottle, it’s a damn fine pour.

NO… but it’s imho a fantastic sipper and if you have the means and it won’t force you to get a second mortgage I highly recommend buying one.

    Love your videos! Very engaging! Btw, just to try to help out, I'll mention that @ 7:52 it sounded like you said "the next *criterium*". Is that what you said? If so, the word is typically "criteria" (in plural form), but the singular form (if you're just referring to 1 specific criteria) is "criteria". Criterium isn't a word. Just trying to help!

    Former buffalo trace employee here. I waa responsible for pulling the 20 year old barrels from ricks. Its so expensive due to just how little bourbon is left.
    All this pappy stuff is is just W.L. Weller picked from the pappy family to be branded. I found the 10 year to be decent.

      So what exactly is responsible for this product being so great? What are the conditions that can't be replicated to produce the same quality product?

    • @theonegoose
      @theonegoose ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Paul-vf2wl With aging bourbon and whiskey, the main things out of your control is the moisture and temperature within your rick houses- Buffalo trace uses steam heating to heat their warehouses on the old plant, the varying degrees of char in your oak barrels and the seasons. We were doing hydrometer tests on barrrels as well as we were pulling in fresh empty barrels.
      Placing your barrels higher or lower on rick floors in a 6 tier rick will also affect the rate at which the oak matures the white dog.

      But less than 10 years ago it was less than 200 bucks. You can’t tell me it’s not a marketing scam. I just bought a calumet 16 for 135 dollars. And a tin cup fouteen year for 62 dollars.

      @theonegoose 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @randymiller8718 Look at the world around you. Everything is inflated. With the brand the only way to drive prices down to is to globally hurt supply by not investing in it. Otherwise the monopoly will continue.

    Was at an event where you could try all of the Pappys for 25 bucks a pop. Preferred the 15 over the older ones. The older ones were smooth, but thought they were a bit too mellow for my liking. Certainly a world class bourbon, but certainly way overvalued.

    $2,500 for a oak dominating flavor whiskey. I can get the exact same experience from a $22.50 bottle of Jim Beam dubble barrel. Less then 100Th the price too!!

    I've had bottles of all the Pappy's except 23 yo. They were not the best bottles I've ever drank. The 20 was over oaked. The other bottles were very good. I actually think I prefer EH Taylor. I've got a Weller Antique 107 store pick right now that I paid $64 for. It ain't Pappy 15, but it's almost just as good, it's way more affordable, and most importantly, it wasn't impossible to get.

    I just watched a special episode of Moonshiners about Pappy Van Winkle and why it’s prices shot straight to the sky and it’s availability plummeted into the ground. In the late 2000’s and early 2010’s an employee of Buffalo Trace was involved in a black market crime ring of stealing Pappy Van Winkle barrels directly from the distillery. This came to a head in 2013 when Buffalo Trace started noticing that a large amount of Pappy product was missing and reported it to the police. It started a huge investigation and media feeding frenzy. After the Buffalo Trace employee and his accomplices were brought to justice and found guilty in 2018, some of the bourbon was recovered but it was destroyed by the distillery. Because they didn’t want to be held accountable for selling liquor that may have been tainted. It’s a shame because it’s several years of heritage gone to waste, and because it’s aged for 20+ years and that means it can’t be enjoyed by the public the way other premium bourbons are today. Because hardly anyone can acquire it, even if they can afford it.

    Let’s not belittle how much contribution that pop culture boost had. You can say Anthony single handedly launched this bourbon into the stratosphere. In the foodie world he was a legend. It’s not unlike TH-camrs today. A great product comes out a few TH-camrs do a video sucking its 🐓 and you can never find it at a reasonable price again. (Don’t know about in your markets but Jim bean black 7yr has almost disappeared in mine) Now take that but on a national tv level at its peak when social media was in its infancy. What you should do is when you find something amazing tell your close friends and relatives and let it travel by mouth. The problem with broadcasting is that you hurt the people who truly enjoy the products and keep them from obtaining them in lieu of a few internet dollars and a big crowd of seals who want something “bougie” to show off. But se la ve once people make it “cool” and “hip” it always ruins it. Cheers there are some amazing things out there better than what is trending now or at the very least on par just roll the dice and try some bottles.
