Met Steve at the London book signing yesterday. Got there two hours early to get one for my oldest son for Christmas, and was pleased to be third in line. Taken from the rulebook: A goal also cannot be scored on a play where an attacking Player kicks any equipment (stick, glove, helmet, etc.) at the puck, including kicking the blade of his own stick, causing the puck to cross the goal line
Unfortunately a little further down after this clause is where it states a player can kick the puck and if it hits an opponents stick then it is a good goal. They got the call right, the problem is with the rule. You can’t kick the puck into the net because it is dangerous, especially closer to the crease with all the bodies flying and a goalie may be down trying to stop the puck. For them to allow it because it hits a defenders stick is weird because it is just as dangerous a play and you are trying to make sure players are not encouraged to swing sharp steel blades at the puck. Even worse with this one is the player actually deflects Tavares stick into the puck with his kicking motion. Probably too rare an occurrence for a rule change but it really should be a penalty for anyone lifting the blade off the ice in a kicking motion because one day someone is going to get their arm or leg sliced.
...sure? And did Stolarz ever play with him? No. Stolarz did play with Bobrovsky and that's going to have an affect on his playing habits. Which was my point.
Yes, the Leafs have had a similar record to start the season over the last few seasons, but they've also ended the season in similar way. I wouldn't say it's panic, I would say it's frustration. Built up frustration of seeing no progress from seasons prior.

@@knganth3mif they make it,they haven't been as good as they usually are and have been the past several years, goalie and defense seem to be struggling again
For Stolarz-Woll there is a very easy solution to one of the best (and worst, depending on quality of goaltenders) problems an NHL team can have, which is you do a roughly 60-40 split favouring whichever goaltender is hot, and encourage the competition for starter. It should bring out the best in both goaltenders. But frankly this isn't weighing on my mind at all. Many teams in the league would kill to be asking this question, and a lot of times the teams that ask this question are doing so because they have two below average goaltenders. Having a (currently) above average goaltender and a (currently) roughly average goaltender is a good problem to have, especially when you know the latter is capable of making world class saves in very high pressure situations.
"Why are fans seemingly panicking more this year than any other year?" Because we're supposed to be better than that. We picked up a Stanley Cup winning goalie. The core is older, more experienced. We have a Stanley Cup winning coach. We picked up 2 amazing defensemen (1 who just won a Stanley Cup). Why are we so mediocre? Matthews just came off a near 70 goal season. Where are his goals this season?
Interesting…. I think I’ve heard similar sentiments when Canucks were beaten by Boston in 2011 Stanley cup…. The Riot in Vancouver wasn’t caused by their fans apparently

Good news for leaf fans is that the entire division is mid minus the panthers. Sidenote, Winnipeg and Minnesota being the presidents trophy favorites was not on my bingo card in the big 2024.
As a Wild fan I had them barely making the Ploffs, didn't expect them to start this well. Don't have a ton of faith in Hynes and the roster didn't change much, that said I figured If they could stay healthy this year they would be good. Last year was riddled with injuries, Kaprizov didn't look 100 percent until after Christmas, Spurgeon missed most of the year, Brodin had a bad injury and the rest of the guys frequently would miss a game or two here and there with an injury, Faber played over the final two months with broken ribs with most games putting in 25 minutes while hurt. Last years finish skewed everyone's perception of the Wild going into this year, the year before they still had a very similar Roster and made the Ploffs, this year the biggest difference is the Wild have guys in Iowa who can be called up to play and be effective (something they kinda lacked last year). It shouldn't be a shock if the Wild make the playoffs but recency bias definitely made everyone forget what the Wild where when they weren't torn up
Hey Steve. I work at the place that made that roll of hockey tape. If you find yourself heading to Ottawa, drop into Renfrew and I can show you how it's done.
It was a fun game to see live. Game got surprisingly chippy for not being any kind of rivalry. I joke about the X letting too many opposing fans in the building, but hearing the home crowd shouted down by the Go Leafs Go chant was new. My father made a comment to the effect "Holy ****, it's like they're the Wild of the eastern conference. Neither team goes to the net enough and both teams got a boat load of special teams problem lol", which I had to agree with at that game, they looked very mirror image to each other.
Wild fan here. I completely agree with the timing between games. Wild had one of those early this season against a rival in the Jets. I think this should be changed in the future. that 3rd period was so competitive!

The Leafs are bound to start scoring more consistently, and they have to be thrilled with the play of Stolarz(value contract for sure). It will be another 15-20 games before we have a better idea of their ceiling this year.

As a Sens fan, I don't understand why they didn't give Reilly the C. Matthews is a fantastic talent, but he doesn't scream Captain to me. Reilly has more heart and grit than Matthews, imo.
You're definitely not watching the games LMAO The reason Matthews has slowed down for me, is that he is focusing a lot more effort on his defensive side right now, which is good, but it will take some time until he finds a balance. Keefe wanted them to be like butter. Soft but slippery, so it does take some time to get used to actual physical hockey. I do see the ups in this team. One flukey goal against, solid D, solid goaltending, and team Defense. The main issue for the Leafs has always been needing to outscore their problems. I don't see that happening how they are playing defensively. Time will tell if they will be able to find the proper balance and get back to scoring, but we do see a definitive improvement from the defensive side. Top 10 PK in the league, and that being one of the main teams to generate PP opportunities for the opponent.
I thought the Leafs outplayed Minnesota for most of the game, they just got tired in the third and overtime as you'd expect. I have to roll my eyes every time Steve complains about the schedule though. Yeah it's a quick turnaround and that's rough but teams in the western conference have vastly worse travel. Half the Leaf's road games can be reached in an hour flight without changing time zones. Steve has some legit beefs with the league but travel shouldn't be one
Secret formula you can predict every leafs win and loss. Just consider if there is pressure to win and if the answer is yes you can be almost certain the leafs will loose. Bad team + pressure to win = fail fold. Power play not clicking + pressure to score = fail fold. Playoffs + pressure to win= fail fold. Important or meaniful game + pressure to win = fail fold. OT + pressure to win= fail fold. A good team in regular season little pressure = win. The Core is garenteed to fail/fold if there is any pressure. Little pressure they play well. Happy betting everyone.
The goaltending and defence were a lot more of a concern last season. The Leafs scored on the power play doing exactly what I've been suggesting they do for a while now: run out the Fab Four and use a forward to quarterback it, because their defence isn't up to the task. It will open them up to short handed goals from less than defensive forwards as the last man back, but short of somehow getting a bonified #1 offensive defenceman it's what they need to do.
All I see is no chemistry between players, just highly paid stars who are moving the puck from one side to another, just no solution, this is Leafs destiny right now, all they can do is wait for different trades and reabuilt the team
I know I'm late to the party on this video, but I do want to say that I LOVED watching the Leafs play on a Sunday MORNING (Eastern Time) in Sweden last year. I really thing the NHL and the PA should start doing occasional Sunday morning games. This "no games before noon" crap is crap!
Wbj2000, what you said 50% of the cap on 4 players, this team can never win anything built like this. Berube has a near impossible job, how do they get out of this division in the playoffs( need to beat Boston, or Florida or TB …) nope !
The Wild was my second team for so long and I can't even be mad when my boy Jared Spurgeon clowns on my hometown team. Leafs D needs to watch his tape.
Leafs bottom 6 forwards in 82 man games have 6 goals. Leafs d-men have 4 goals in 79 man games. Nylander-57 Knies-39 Tavares-34 Mathews-32 Pacioretty-16 Marner-13 this is what the leafs top guys are on pace for in goals. That's a combined 191 goals for the season. Last season the leafs scored a total of 296 goals. Now Matthews and Marner should get more than what their on pace for. BIG QUESTION WHERE ARE THE OTHER 105 GOALS COMING FROM?
This man signed books for 15 hours straight today and still did an LFR. Legend.

The Leafs are bound to start scoring more consistently, and they have to be thrilled with the play of Stolarz(value contract for sure). It will be another 15-20 games before we have a better idea of their ceiling this year.
Matthews gets handed the C & starts playing even softer. Utter insanity they ran it back AGAIN.
Not true. He’s not playing as well. But he’s playing with more grit. Did you not see him DROP suter for hitting marner against at Louis ?
Dude that was after the play lol. Can he do anything when it actually matters? Sorry if you thought that was his physical breakthrough, he is soo soft. Bring back Gilmour or Clark....OEL has more guts then him @@brockgummerson5310
He punched out Suter for trying to behead Marner! Soft? What are you talking about?
As a Sens fan, I don't understand why they didn't give Reilly the C. Matthews is a fantastic talent, but he doesn't scream Captain to me. Reilly has more heart and grit than Matthews, imo.
You're definitely not watching the games LMAO
The reason Matthews has slowed down for me, is that he is focusing a lot more effort on his defensive side right now, which is good, but it will take some time until he finds a balance.
Damn...this video went Hard.
Congratulations.
Great job Steve, get a Good night's sleep. You deserve it
We usually see an uptick in November. It takes time for new chemistry to fruit
Lmfao!!! New Chemistry?!?!? They ran it back!!!! It’s become so easy to make money off you delusional Leaf’s fans.
Got to meet you yesterday in London and you met everyone on my Husband's expectations!
Building a team starts with goaltending. One box checked.
So you think that Stolarz will be the guy. The leafs are his 5th team.
@@bskinny9009 Don't know for sure but the small sample size is encouraging. Time will tell.
All I see is no chemistry between players, just highly paid stars who are moving the puck from one side to another, just no solution, this is Leafs destiny right now, all they can do is wait for different trades and reabuilt the team
At one point its not always the
Leafs goalies fault is not gonna win with 1 goal @bskinny9009
@@gdavho8778 Ok, he's never played more than 28 games in a season and he's already 30.
they invented radio to listen to the game, its like streaming
Always the best.
Are you coming to Belleville again for this book Mr Dangle?
From the start of the third, they were not playing to win, they were playing not to lose
I had the exact same work starting times as the Leafs this weeked, I started an hour earlier than the day before but had the extra hour of sleep too 😂
Is it possible that the slow start is due to learning a new game strategy ?
I know I'm late to the party on this video, but I do want to say that I LOVED watching the Leafs play on a Sunday MORNING (Eastern Time) in Sweden last year. I really thing the NHL and the PA should start doing occasional Sunday morning games. This "no games before noon" crap is crap!
Tell me if you have heard this before. Blowing over 50% of your cap on four players is absolutely killing this team.
Wanted to be at the signing today but my nephew had a birthday party out of town… would’ve much rather picked up a book and an autograph!
I honestly think it's because how they played against Tampa. It's giving everyone some serious hope and confusion. 5:26
