    Russia was providing what percent of EU's energy needs? Can Middle East and Africa be a replacement of Russia in this aspect for EU ? Can EU or Russia afford this deadlock for long?

    • @muhammadafghan5721
      @muhammadafghan5721 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1. EU was dependent on 40% of its energy requirement from Russia before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. After the invasion, the EU decided to wean itself gradually away from Russian energy in a concerted effort to punish Russia through a sanction regime.
      2. Europe is pivoting towards the Middle East and Africa to fill up the void in the absence of Russian energy. Biden's recent visit to KSA was part of the plan. However, since there is a lack of connectivity between Europe and the Middle East, they'll have to import Middle Eastern energy in the form of LNG. The problem doesn't end here. Since Europe was importing its lion's share of energy from Russia through the well-established pipeline infrastructure, it simply didn't need to develop an LNG storage infrastructure. But now since the energy comes in the form of LNG, Europe is faced with the problem of its storage leading to the ongoing energy crisis.
      3. At the moment, apparently, the EU can't afford to be increasingly at loggerheads with Russia over Ukraine, and this is an issue which has caused a partial split in the EU. European dependence on Russia serves to be the former's Achilles heel, and Putin is well aware of it. It takes too long to develop LNG infrastructure and much longer to develop a pipeline between Europe and the Middle East. This is why French President Macron said, "Russia and Europe must find a middle ground to end the war in Ukraine and the crises that followed."
