WHICH GEAR IS MOST ECONOMICAL AT 70MPH

What is the most economical gear to drive in at a constant 70mph?
I drove my car late at night on a bank holiday 40 miles along the motorway in each gear using cruise control to find the most fuel efficient gear. Don't fall asleep this could save you money.

This video made me all nostalgic as I used to have an exact model and I loved it!
I now run a Toyota Auris Hybrid 1.8 Tourer Sport and it’s much more economical but my son in law still wants to check the stats. I don’t care providing it gets me from A to B & back if I ever go there.

Very nicely put test. I'm wondering how close the car's computer calculated MPG compares to your calculated values. On the other hands the results are pretty straight forward, the higher the gear the lower the fuel consumption for a given speed, especially for lower gears. I bet it was so annoying to drive it in 3rd for so long :D

The cars computer was close to what I actually got at the pumps. My Avensis computer always tells me I'm getting more mpg than I really, very optimistic. 3rd gear was fine, the engine is more comfortable at 3500rpm than 1500.😄

Wasim Akhtar pleased you found it useful Wasim. Yes top gear is best on motorways especially when used in conjunction with cruise control. Look on mycarcheck to find your peak torque and keep the rev counter around that rpm.

Its a model from 2011 but sold in 2012 , D4D 2000 cc diesel. You had a Avensis to right???
