The Ford Mustang II is a small, front-engined (V8), open "two-plus-two" concept car built by the Ford Motor Company in 1963. Although bearing the same name as the first generation production Mustang, the four-seater Mustang II which closely resembled the final production variant that would appear in 1964, was intended primarily for the auto show circuit. After debuting at the 1963 Watkins Glen Grand Prix, the Mustang II had a short lifespan as a show car before being relegated to the task of "test mule". The sole example still exists, albeit in storage at the Detroit Historical Museum.
Iacocca knew that the public interest in the Mustang was strong, but he wanted to pique further enthusiasm by creating a concept car that would hint at future Ford products. The result was the Mustang II, redesigned by stylist John Najjar using elements of the Mustang I. The car, initially still known as the "Cougar" was based on a pre-production prototype, and fabricated by the Dearborn Steel Tubing (DST) company.[6][Note 1] The prototype bore the designation: "X 8902-SB-208".[8]
Visually, the Mustang II resembled the first generation Mustang, with the same triple-bar taillights, faux side louvers and the 108-inch wheelbase, but some modifications made it a unique variant. The steel body, reinforced by fibreglass sections was five inches longer and three inches shorter in height. The body did not incorporate bumpers and featured a cut-back, swept low-profile windscreen and buried, sculpted headlight treatment. Starting with the original car's roof cut off to create a convertible, a detachable fibreglass hardtop was made, but the Mustang II often appeared as a roadster.[9] The interior had "aircraft-styled" instrument clusters with Ford Falcon speedometer predominating and the rest, handmade upholstery on "... mostly a wood frame. The whole interior treatment is fibreglass and things held up with pieces of 2x4 jammed into big blobs of putty."[8]
On October 5, 1963. the Mustang II made its formal debut at Watkins Glen, New York, the day before the United States Grand Prix, replicating the public launch of the Mustang I at the same event the previous year.[10] The Mustang II only appeared a few more times through the winter of 1964 at auto shows as a show car. It served to stir interest in the future Mustang before being eclipsed by the imminent public launch of its counterpart.
You did a fantastic job with that kit! For 50 plus year old tooling it looks rather clean! That kit, even when new, was a bear to get those body panels to line up straight!!
Chris that came out great!! Being an IMC kit as it’s original release, it can be a fussy build. But you nailed it. Very nice!!! 😎
These finally arrived in Europe so watched this with interest. Yr build philosophy is similar to mine ie dont have weeks/months to build a kit and aerosols are just fine with care taken on details. On the glass fitment I use a thin bead of simple Humbrol Clear and works well and thinner than Mod Podge. I noted yr issue with the rear white trye decal and may look at hand lining turning on a drill which worked well on the Citroen DS WW tyres I did a few months back. Looking at your Buick next 🙂
Like the models you build.
A very old kit sold under multiple brands over the decades. A cool concept car. I have the Lindberg version unbuilt. Requires great care and patience to build correctly.
Great job 🐎Mr. Ed says just have fun modeling
This was the car Lee Iacocca presented to Ford, made of mostly of ALL "off the shelf" Ford parts. Ford fired him. But Ford's Accountants and Marketing Team LOVED it for its low costs and Corvette killing potential. Ford hired Lee back. The Mustangs outsold most every other car in the late 60's and the early Mustangs remain so popular you can literally build a new one from ALL reproduction parts. Great choice Chris - Thanks!
That dollar store super glue sure comes in handy when attaching all those chrome parts! Sure beats spending hours scraping chrome 🤯
As usual, awesome review and build. Rock on Brother 💪!
This car is cool! Usually concept cars are too far out. But this one is sharp!
That turned out great👍👍
Very nice build. The interior looks great. It looks like a nice kit. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice build and car Chris.
Very good Wednesday build
absolutely LOVE the interior!!
Always a great video
Nice build - I wouldn't mind taking this car for a spin.
Thats a cool looking car..!!! ...and,..good job on it BTW. :)
Great job, it amazes me how fast and great you build mate👍👍
Thank you so much 😀
Cool kit
Well detailed kit given its age and I would love to see it displayed next to an actual production Mustang to see the various changes. I don't know whether the Mustang would have been as successful as it became if it went into production looking like this.
Yes IMC Kits Were Well Engineered For Advanced Builders So test Fit Fix & Retest Fit Is Required Like Dodge A100 Doors
Looks great Chris
been waiting for this build----built an original issue around 1964 and for a beginning 14 year old it was a bear to build---it was originally issued by a company called IMC(I think) was way ahead of its time with all the working features--this company also had a companion kit Called the Cougar II kit and a very nice first generation Ford gt 40 and I believe a couple of other Ford kits---all had lots of working features--have a reissue of the Mustang kit and one of the Cougar II kits built up that are in storage--also have a couple of unbuilt of both kits in my attic--your mistake with the tie rod kinda gave me an idea of building these as right hand drive kits----thanks for the idea--if I ever get them built I will post them on Phartbook----anyway enjoyed the build
I love these wednesday views
I’ve got the old IMC body of that here somewhere, boxed up, I just seen it not long ago. Looks like a lot of newer parts though from what I remember.
Carol Shelby always wore a cowboy hat the figure might be him
There is a Barn find Hunter video from not too long ago showing two of the original cars in a warehouse in Detroit.
I have the Aurora version of this model. I bought it a lo-o-o-ong time ago. Still haven't even started it.
This is originaly an AMT kit, its roots are from IMC. It has been released as a Testors and then Lindberg as well.
Great video and review. Did the Mustang concept come with a 289 V-8? I am just curious. Have a great day.
Nice kit just never been into concept cars. Only one I ever liked was the Chrysler turbine cars. Not very sure I'd even spend the money on it.
But that's me?????🙂
Chris Originally Was IMC Kit thinking Lindberg might Have Reissued ,?? IMC Kit out of Business By 74 Glad AMT is reissuing Like TTT Dodge A100
A bit of a tricky to build kit- probably best for experienced modelers.
Did you ever figure out that brown decal placement?
Same here - was wondering Chris - any ideas. Almost worth buying 2 kits to do 2x variants
I miss the days when the modeling subjects on this channel were more varied. Now it seems to be predominantly cars.
Wasn't that a Lindberg kit? If so, since they are the owners of Lindberg, why don't they re-issued it under the Lindberg brand?
Nice build.
