@@kirkkw 4 tires doesnt really matter as much as weight on the tire. For small tractors like these having the riders butt on the rear axle is the advantage. More tires = more weight distribution = less contact pressure. If you look at say Rally Car racing tires for ice they are narrower and studded. Rain and snow tires same thing narrower. Duals on tractors are about soil compaction not grip.
If Taryl had attached the strap forward of his drive tires he might have had an edge with the taller tires.
@@alanbloodworth2653 what he needed was a large central weight rack. A ridemaster is designed to take its load from a central draw point under the riders feet and they sold discs plows harrows blades etc. A weight rack with say 400 lbs of weight and the tow point mounted to it would have transferred weight to that front tire. Then it's just a question of torque.
@@pbgd3 These tractors R not Rally cars there swami they R tractors and if you ever knew anything about speed & performance which my whole life is about just like but not quite like race cars where I spent a better part of my life in NEPA on the dirt and asphalt racing. If U air down those DUAL WHEELs the tractors get a significant bite of mud dirt. It was only until the better part of 20th century some genie like you figured on using duals for weight transfers above the axles... So while U R dazed and still confused watch a few tractor pull videos U might even see me in one of em... I will let know what air pressure I was running when I won Ok..

Sneaking one in on us at 1 AM......Pretty sneaky Mr. Dactyl......it's obvious Slip Dog was going to win.....beautiful red machine vs old green and yellow.....no contest lol! Great fun, great machines, great guys!!! Quality entertainment at a price you can't beat!
Sharon is the one you meet at a lawnmower shop and take home for a quick roll in the field after a few to many at closing time. Susan is the tractor you take home to meet your folks.
Slipper's Craftsman lawn tractor is so cool. I love the Ridemaster too. Great job on those restorations guys.

No expense was spared in the production of this tugging extravaganza.
It's a difference of rear wheel drive vs. front wheel drive. The moment created on the frame both from the torque applied to the wheels and from the tow strap transfers weight from the front wheels to the rear. In the case of the Sears, this increases traction, but in the case of the Bolens, it decreases traction.

I like the Taryl tactic of placing a mountain of dirt behind the wheels.
I was worried about the tug off until I
saw two tractors there Neil and I once had a tug off together in the lunar module
The moon was alright. I mean I can't speak for Buzz, but I really prefer the lunar capsule.

I think the dually treatment on Slippers mower is significant here. The Bolens may need a ring /valve job and then a rematch. Seems low on power even when it tried the hill twice it failed. It loses traction too easy. No weight on the front drive wheels. Congrats Slippers, Taryl thanks for playing!

Nice show of strength. I'm guessing that the four drive wheels made the difference.
I'm thinking put quad drive wheels/ tires on the ridemaster... like slippers has on the Sears... and then hang a snow plow out off the front of the ridemaster... like slippers has on the Sears.... then do a "re tug" .... if nothing else, I think Taryl will have a pretty nice snow plow come winter time...🤔
The old Sears tractors are tough hombres. I had one and all the little riding mowers in the neighborhood would run hide when I’d bring that bad boy out back in the day. It was a 1966 Sears Suburban 12 with the high and low range transmission. Excellent machine. I’m looking to find another and restore it.
They are good tractors, I have 7 suburbans and a custom 10XL

U know what I was thinking the same damn thing probably at the part of the video where we were only seeing one wheel turning. Thee reasons I am saying that is I have a souped up almost every day hot rod of a Deere Lx172 I use around the house and my shop even pull customers vehicles around with since I put a 17hp Kawasaki in the thing the tractor became a friggin monster it really did but when it is slippery out I noticed it is limited slip diff in the damn thing. So I got a Donor Lx 172 which ain't getting so easy to find no more these days. i did weld a bridge joint and should have made a video about it it ain't that easy and neither is welding metal that has been submerged in oil for decades.. Slippers did real nice resto job on that old bohemuth.. Looks really nice just to see the thing back in one piece like it used to be. JUST A NOTE TO U NEW HOBBIESTS OF THE VINTAGE TRACTORS. YEARS AGO I REMEMBER WHEN MY GRAND FATHER BOUGHT A BRAND NEW PAIR OF AG TIRES 4 OUR MASSEY WE HAD ON THE PATCH I GOT AN OLD HAND ME DOWN FARM ALL FROM A NEIGHBOR AND OUR LOWER PASTURE USED TO GET SO SLIPPERY ESPECIALLY IN THE WINTERS HE WELDED THE REAR AXLE TO MAKE HIS POSI TRACTION. WHEN I GOT HOME FROM BOOT CAMP MY GRANDFATHER HAD PASSED ON AND HIS TRACTOR WAS MOTH BALLED WHERE IT STILL SITS TO THIS DAY FULLY RESTORED. I DID MINE BECAUSE HIS CHORES OF FEEDING THE HORSES AND SCOOPING THE CHICKEN AND TURKEY PENS BECAME MY CHORES TOO. MY COUSIN ON THE SAME FARM BOUGHT AN OLD ALLIS AND THAT HAD THE POSI REAR BECAUSE IT WAS NOT BUILT AS TILLING MACHINE BUT IT WAS BUILT AS TRAILER PULLER UNLIKE THE MASSEY AND FARM ALL. I LEARNED SOME THINGS THRU SOME OLD TIMERS THESE TRACTORS HAD DESIGNATIONS RIGHT ON THEIR HOOD COWLS AS TO WHETHER OR NOT THEY R A PULLER OR TILLER OR UTILITY TYPES. I COUILD GO ON AND ON. THE DEAD GIVE AWAY IS THE SNOW PLOW MADE TO FIT MY OWN MACHINE SAYS DO NOT USE ON TYPE A FARM ALL TILLERS. I HAD NO IDEA THESE TRACTORS HAD DESIGNATED USAGES. EVEN THE MANUALS DO NOT REALLY SPECIFY IT'S THE MODELS AND SERIAL NUMBERS THAT SPECIFY THEIR USAGES. MOST RACTORS TO DATE HAVE LIMITED SLIP REARS YET THE MFG IDIOTS WILL STILL SELL YA A PLOW WITH EM... GO FIGURE BACK IN THE 20'S THRU THE 1960'S THAT WAS A BIG NO NO... NOW PEOPLE R TOO DUMB TO EVEN KNOW THE DIFF.

Ugly as sin but no rust and after a full deck rebuild, runs smoother than my 5 yo crapsman! if only I could find a hood, somewhat local for a decent price😅
@@aaronpowell4885 I can look into a hood 4 ya. I am retired now & still fiddle with the riding mowers people around here buy em from me restored. You might be stuck at $350 for a hood in the after market stuff like Flip MFG makes the hoods and the other guys on Ebay have em too. I just saw a weird one called Lt367 not an Lt366 but a 367 this thing had a lighted frame top on it an angle iron frame like a roof over the mower. Kinda inspired me redoing my newest project is a Craftsman Gt6000 with the huge snow blower... I just got that found it at an abandoned property a friend of mine bought... ANYWAY The local dealer here told me someone probably put the Lt367 label on the Deere kinda a home made put on thing he said people have been doing that sort of stuff out of boardem during the covid thing. However I was thinking from the start about putting a frame like that over my Gt6000 as well as a windshield to keep the snow from flying back at me. I guess ya don't miss the old machines until ya have one back under your ass. I mean the stuff I have now I wouldn't sell it period after working on this new stuff coming in here... Keep your old machines U have. I think I just found a Sears 110 on line this evening the guy just wants it removed from his yard.
Differential lock would be nice. I have a similar Sears. Always getting stuck, as a result.

Taryl, I wonder if the Ridemaster would have done better, if you connected the rope to front and went in reverse. Maybe it would have bit into the ground better. Nice video, interesting to see those two machines doing some real work.

Only if he reversed the ag tires. Agricultural tires are very directional and don't work worth a hoot in reverse. Or when stopping. They'll slide like a hockey puck.
Your center of gravity is to high and his dual rears help kinda kewl
I’ve been thinking about this tug -o-war, maybe Slip Dog should take the outer rear wheels off and then have another go at it. The Sears might have had an unfair advantage with the dual rear wheels.

That was a turn up for the book. Easy.
When the 2 are back to back pulling against each other, the advantage goes to the RWD. The force of the pull causes the weight of the RWD to shift onto the drive wheels increasing its traction. With the FWD, the force causes the weight to shift to the non-drive wheels reducing its traction. If the two went head to head in reverse, the advantage would go to the FWD.
looks like you need to seal your concrete! hahahaha
The pull points made the difference, Slippers was pulling from a lower angle and Taryls tractor hitch in up near his seat, The fulcrum effect means that Taryl tractor was never gonna get any traction.

It would be interesting to see the Bolens turned around so it was hooked up to the front & tugging in reverse.
Just an observation but the Bolens couldn't seem to keep it's front wheel drive on the ground.
It looks like that low squatty center of gravity & short wheel base is what made it happen for the Sears.

Well. that was pretty much a foregone conclusion. Slippers has Tractive Effort over a wider area and a lower Centre of Gravity.
He also has Rear-Wheel Drive so he gets pushed along rather than pulled. There's the weight of the rear assembly, too, in his favour . . .
Taryl's machine, nice bit o' kit though it is, is essentially a unicycle with an engine and stabilisers.

Terkel, you had your hitch point to high, slippers was tugging your front tires off the ground. You need a lower hitch. The same height as slippers! I call for a pavement rematch! Ps lower your tire pressure too. Mums the word!
Normally the strap must be level to be fair. In this match, the angle put both machines at a disadvantage.
