    Great restoration! I have a 1940-50s REO powered reel mower. It has a proprietary engine.
    It's in great condition! REO was a truck manufacturer of Diamond T tractors. They also built big straight trucks for fire trucks, etc. The mowers and other things were built at their Home Products Division in Lansing, Michigan.

  • @billsimpson604
    @billsimpson604 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Flail mowers are still quite common for mowing along highways, since they can cut steep steep slopes off the sides of a tractor and hit debris without much damage to the mower.
    RustOleum spray stops up because the paint is thicker. Turn the can upside down and spray until only gas comes out, and the nozzles won't stop up as often. Stop as soon as the paint stops coming out with the can inverted. Their new self leveling brush on paint is amazing stuff.

    I've never heard of a Mott's hammer blade mower but now that I've seen one and saw it in action I think they're awesome 👌! Another small mower similar to that one that I've never seen in action is one that has the scissor type cutters out front that works like a sickle bar mower. I'm thinking that they're probably used for high thick weeds too probably.

    Very nice job! The sharpening job looks like a real pain - to remove all the cutters, bend all the cotter pins, etc. Wouldn't look forward to that regular maintenance. Impressive that you recreated the missing parts for completeness.

    • @Blazer02LS
      @Blazer02LS 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They made a tool for that which looks like a large dremel with a guide on it. You ran the engine out of gas, then flipped it up so it sat on the handle and the guard and then you could sharpen them without removal.

    • @Hjerte_Verke
      @Hjerte_Verke 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought I was the only one. I wrote Rust-Oleum and had to demand a free set of nozzles so I could use up my spray paint cans that had clogged.
      I might just switch to Krylon or Taryl's brand

    • @JohnStrandt
      @JohnStrandt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Hjerte_Verke I used to turn the can upside down and hit the nozzle for a while to clear it after use, it kinda works... but I would also rob nozzles from other cans, that also works, lol

    14:40 a little tip to keep paint can nozzles from clogging up, after you're done painting, turn the can upside down and depress the valve until the spray is clear. Wipe off and store as usual

    • @donmoore7785
      @donmoore7785 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @Hjerte_Verke
      @Hjerte_Verke 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think "safety regulations" figured into it and this machine is not the simplest--simple is a rotary push mower with one spinning blade, which explains their endurance to this very day. I just think the Hammer Knife with its multiple blades, not to mention the hassle of sharpening (or replacing) each one, is way too complicated for the average homeowner. Safety regulations vary though, depending on locale....

    Mott is now owned by Alamo who still manufactures flail type mowers. Alamo Flail mowers are mainly utilized for right of way mowing by government municipalities as well as state highway departments in different configurations of the flail style mowers. At one time the flail mowers were being manufactured for garden tractors in which were mounted on the front of the tractor.

    Taryl I can tell you why it didn't catch on. This machine as a walk behind is to dangerous if you trip or fall while using it it will be on top of you hammer knifing your feet and legs etc. This company makes larger versions of these. Some even to be pulled by lawn mowers etc. If you want to get even bigger these are generically called flail mowers and most Government agencies use these to mow roadside right of ways. You need to be very careful around any sort of cable, such as electric fence etc.. They can do a lot of scary stuff in a matter of seconds. A company called Tiger makes a larger version for mowing around guard rails etc which can even mow down decent sized trees.
