I have been able to bring you a bunch of videos of guns with Ethiopian connections over the last few months thanks to InterOrdnance, aka Royal Tiger Imports. They have purchased essentially the entire stock of obsolete arms in Ethiopian stockpiles and brought them to the collector market here in the US. Because Ethiopia had military support from such a wide variety of nations over the past 140+ years, and because they kept even very old rifles in stockpiles, this is a real treasure chest of collectible rifles. It is on par with things like Sam Cummings buying up the Spanish stocks in the 1950s and IMA buying out the Nepalese stocks 10 or 20 years ago.
The guns coming out of Ethiopia are often very worn, but many of them have a truly unique history and they cover nearly a century of development from single shot systems like the Burden and Gras to bolt action repeaters like the Carcano, Enfield, and Mauser to Cold War self loading rifles like the MAS 49/56, Hakim, and vz.52. For the collector, this really is a tremendous opportunity, which we are unlikely to see again for a long time.
For the record: I have no financial interest in InterOrdnance's sales; I don't receive a commission or kickback. I have gotten a number of rifles as they bring in different models, and those are mine to keep. I have done my best to show those rifles in the condition that I get them, so anyone considering buying something themselves can see exactly what they are likely to get.

I got one of their Enfield No. 4 Mk. 1s in yesterday. The action was filled with dead bugs of all things.
They probably wandered down the barrel, looking for a dark, dry place to hide.

I bought one of their Czech made Mausers. They're very cool, especially the St. George coin in the stock.
It's definitely the luck of the draw. I got my Gew98 a couple weeks ago and it's pretty much trashed. No matching parts, no Ethiopian markings, and it was more or less a smooth bore rifle. If you pick something up out of curiosity, don't go for high dollar items because you might lose.
Richard Ziminski Yep and you’ll be stuck with it. Best I can do is swap the barrel to get a good shooter out of it but as far as collectible value, it has none.

Cosmoline saves the day again! Picked up some K98 bayonets years ago that looked like they were stored in tar. Cleaned up great! There must be great stores of stuff still, in almost forgotten armories around the world.

My fathers from Eritrea. When Eritrea was fighting for independence, they didnt have much for arms when they started but they captured all kinds of equipment and arms from the Ethiopians and Eritrea still uses this stuff 30 years on

In case anyone wanted to know, the arms and equipment were all Soviet. SKS, AKs (Underfolder 7.62) a whole mess of T-72 tanks and logistics vehicles as well.
Somalia got some too. A lot of the stuff they had was RUSSIAN.
@@achillebelanger9866 what's even more ironic is the Soviets supplying both Somalia and Ethiopia through the 70s. The Ogaden were fighting in Eastern Ethiopia for their independence. The Ogaden were being supplied arms/equipment by the Somali government to fight Ethiopia. Which side were the Soviets on? lol
I have a MAS 49/56 from Ethiopia. I have seen photos of Eritrean People's Liberation Front using these rifles, in the 70's. I am hoping my rifle, being from Ethiopia, was one of these such rifles. If anyone can shed some light on the subject, I would appreciate it!

I've bought three carcanos, of three different types, from two different sources from this stash. ALL have been very rough... and likely have overpaid vs the actual condition of the guns.
In 1986, Ethiopia was literally a starving nation. Driven by famine, and wrecked.
Americans donated out of our wealth, and the blood of our Soldiers and other Combatants - and now 30 years later, you have the results.
Ethiopia is now growing and thriving, in a region still embroiled in ancient tribal warfare - Ethiopia is a beacon of Liberty and hope.
At the 4 minute mark,Ian called it a panoply of arms. So I looked it up in my 1905 dictionary. [ Gr. panoplia pan,all and hopla(pl),arms.]

Fascinating and unique moment and place in history
I bought an M1 from RT. At first very disappointed because the stock was very rough. Then I checked the hardware. I received a Winchester with matching barrel good bore with December 1942 marked and a serial number under 2000000. So who cares about the stock. Also fires like a champ after having it inspected and cleaned by a professional gun smith.

One has to believe that there were also machine guns over there. I would love to see decent priced MP40 and MG34 parts kits like in the early 90’s.
It’s a shame contemporary military surplus will never reach civilian hands due to machine gun regulation, such as the famas, fal’s, m14’s (maybe), and others
It COULD reach civilian's hands as parts kits if all these countries decided to actually sell them, but instead they're just destroyed due to firearms being stupidly politically dicey.

Careful with Royal Tiger! Recently purchased a hand picked rifle and the exposed barrel was blown out from an apparent barrel obstructions. It was impossible not to instantly see. They have one customer service rep (the manager) and she is extremely hard to deal with and finally get refunded for. Wish someone else would have brought these rifles into the country.
During the Hay day of historical surplus the cheap price the importers paid was transferred to the buyer.Now they are very expensive..so the opportunity is a bit tarnished.

I bought one the M1 carbines and had a gunsmith work it over. They found the bugs in the stock and replaced springs. After a good cleaning, it shoots and looks terrific! Pricey but worth having a Saginaw carbine!

Ethiopia, little brother to the world that got the big brothers' hand me downs, and cherished these hand me downs for the big brothers to be given them back.
Makes me wonder what other stockpiles are just kinda of lying low waiting to be discovered
Think of the other African and South American armories that have not been touched. I can think of Ecuador and Uruguay, and most of the former French colonies of West and Central Africa. No idea of the condition of surplus equipment in the Congo, but they have had everything in use in that country's conflicts over the last 70 years.
I would surmise Europe is tapped out, especially since it's been 20 years since the Yugoslav wars ended, and Albania's armories were used up for the War on Terror. And don't forget Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Lots of firearms there, and the sooner we Americans repeal the NFA and import controls of GCA68, the sooner we can help our economies and gun safes.
Syria and Libya's armories beckon, too, but a lot of that stuff is being actively used right now, if you know what I mean...
The story is the real gem here. Bloody hell, you're good at this Ian. Fascinating. I remember seeing a lot of rather worn SMLE's (at a glance usually, so there were probably other firearms but one didn't stare then) in Nepal in the early 90's largely carried minus the magazine for some reason; always by someone in uniform.

Just the history and the many stories behind each is something that i find fascinating.
I bought one of their "Very Good to Excellent" M1 Carbines. I'm no expert in grading the condition of rifles, so I don't know whether it really falls into that category, but aside from being dirty, it looks to be in great shape to me. No rust, do dings or dents in any of the metal parts. The parkerizing is worn a bit, but I was expecting that. The stock has a few dings, but only one small gouge, and overall looks quite nice. Honestly, the rack number painted on the buttstock is what annoys me the most, but even that is part of the gun's history, so I'm going to leave it. I haven't had the chance to take it to the range yet, but overall I'm very satisfied.
I got one of the same. mine included a somewhat ratty but correct original sling and oiler. Rack numbers, somewhat rough stock, but a beautiful bore. The magazine with it was also correct for the gun (mine is a winchester). I have shot 30 rds through mine so far, and it immediately became one of my favorite firearms.

While I agree that these rifles do have a unique historical significance, I still don't agree with how 85% of the batch has been priced.
While some of the rifles (like the Ethiopian contract FN rifles and the various conversions like the ones you showcased) are rare enough to deserve it, the rest of the batch already had similar rifles that had been imported at earlier times and in significant numbers in *FAR* nicer condition (the Czech Mausers, No. 4 Mk 1's, Mas-49's,the M1 carbines, most of the Carcano variants, ect) than anything that has come in out of Ethiopia. Yet the Ethiopian rifles have all be priced very closely to the second-hand market price of similar rifles in *MUCH* nicer condition than any of this Ethiopian batch.
Tlrd, no Classic and RTI, no way I'm paying $500 for a rusty clapped out Enfield or $600 for an equally beatup normal Czech Mauser that just happened to come from Ethiopia.
This is what I've been trying to preach. Most people wont take the time to research since you haven't been able to just simply buy some of these guns in awhile.By "simply buy" I mean all these in one place from one dealer. A few minutes on GunBroker you can find most of these guns in much better condition and cheaper.

Ethiopia seems tailor made for Forgotten Weapons episodes. Just having such an interesting history of arms procurement (and interesting history as a nation overall) really makes these episodes worth the watch.

I found a live exotic spider in the bore of my french berthier rifle. it must be a good omen cuz that had the nicest bore of any of the guns i got from them. shoots great!
So, I did just this. I bought a 1891 Carcano as I've always wanted to get into CnR collecting and the 6.5 Long Rifle is fairly well known for being a decent and underrated rifle. I currently have it at a Local Gunsmith checking to make sure it's safe and cleaning it up. Bolt didn't match but it worked fairly well from a general inspection and i am very happy with it. Saving up to hopefully get a SMLE as that is the next one on my list.
I just want more of the history about all these gun cashes like these ones or military loaned guns like cmp m1 rifles. Thanks for the vids

I'm not a big fan of IO/RTI however there is value in the stuff they found in some cases. Kinda with the same reasoning I ended up ordering a carcano M1891/24 carbine because it's kind of an uncommon variant that I've never even seen an example of personally so idk buyer beware but I took a chance hopefully I'll get something in the ok catagory
Ordered a B grade 1886 Lebel pre 1898 selection. I'm going to do a review of it as soon as it gets here.
It makes you wonder what is lurking in other Armouries. Burma (Myanmar) for instance, which basically sealed itself off, after independance in the late 1940's. India even. Last time I was out there 20 odd years back, Police, security etc, were still using Lee Enfields. Interestiong when you ponder on it.
and I have pondered what Milsurp stuff would be imported if and when the two Koreas finally reunite. (Though that scenario would most likely happen in a few decades time, and HOPEFULLY, we still have the right to own guns and be able to import guns into the country.)
@@franciszeklatinik889 Yeah, Korea in its entirety (North and South) prior to WW2 was part of the Japanese Empire , so a lot of old Japanese kit could be on the cards, but assume a lot of it was destroyed during the Korean war. As things stand, I'd guess the the South could have a lot of US kit from the 50's and likwise with Soviet kit in the North. As for re-unification, I'm not holding my breath. As for other repositories for old firearm kit, you just never know where stuff could surface from.
He mentions and indicates an F.N. Mauser, while Anthony Vanderlindin's "F.N. Mauser Rifles" sits right next to me.
How long do you have the Mauser sitting next to you, to be able to make that comment now?

I got a German K98k from the cache, dou 1943 with intact Waffenamt eagles and Soviet capture X. Has a Kriegsmodell stock with the St. George medallion embedded. I'd love to know how this rifle made it to Ethiopia.

I just finished cleaning a lee enfield No.4 Mk.1 from them today. Cleaned up quite nicely, going out to shoot it tomorrow. Only problem is mine was given the wrong magazine so I’ve got to source a proper magazine.
Been super on the fence about grabbing a Gras from them. I think this pushed me in the right direction lol.
Just grabbed an 1874. Cant wait to see how it looks.

It's a really neat stockpile of history, but I wish InterOrdnance wasn't charging quite so much for rotten wood and sewer pipe. It looks like many of the guns are wall-hanger quality moreso than safe to shoot.

Their customer service is horrendous and shipping times are unreal how long it takes.

The M1 Carbine I bought from them was amazing. It looks like it was rebuilt at a US arsenal, shipped over, and then NEVER used.
These were stored in sheds that barely kept the weather off of them.
