    There was one of those in my Grandparent's neighborhood back in the early '70's along with a white and blue Trans Am. I dreamed of having one of those cars back in the day. I did eventually get a '78 Trans Am with the T/A 6.6 (Pontiac 400ci) engine.

    My kind of car--thanks for the video! Back in the day, I owned a '68 Firebird RA III, a '70 GTO RA II (068 cam) with auto trans, and a '74 TA 400 w/auto trans--not all at same time! So, as a Pontiac aficionado, I understood perfectly when you said big block & RA III. Actually, unlike Ford, Chrysler & Chevy, which actually had small & big block engines, all of Pontiac's engines could be considered "big" blocks, as they all used same basic block--even 326, lol! I do understand difference between block size and displacement...

    Folks. Give it a rest. I misspoke. It's is not a big block. You guys are all right. Pontiac engines from certain sizes where all same size externally. Chevy had big blocks. Both GM products so it can be confusing. I think I said it one time. At the time of the video I also owned a 396 Chevelle big block. Gosh ... I hope it's called a big block.

    Just imagine, this car could have been the fastest production car in the world in 1970 if Chevy wasn't so butt hurt. They could have put an all aluminum Ram Air V racing engine in the Firebirds with those monster high flow heads, intake, factory headers, forged crank, rods, pistons, high lift cam, solid lifters ETC. It's awesome we can do it with reproduction Ram Air V engine parts now though. I'm really hoping Big Chief (aka Justin Shearer) from "Street Outlaws" TV show gets some major sponsorship in the NHRA using PONTIAC power! I've been a PONTIAC MANIAC for over 50 years! :-) Nice bird Sir, my hat's off to you.

      I like the way you think J.E.T. RAV in a 69 or 70 'bird is the bomb.
      And @ Brian C, he wasn't saying they came with RAVs, so take a chill pill. And by the way, it wasn't a 301, but a 303, but who's counting.

    • @sebbonxxsebbon6824
      @sebbonxxsebbon6824 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      301 was a crap block, 303 would have been awesome! Chevy couldn't let a Pontiac win could they?

    • @joequillun7790
      @joequillun7790 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1970 was a bad year for Pontiac on the road coarse. That's when their only driver (Jerry Titus) crashed and died, so because of the times when performance was being labeled taboo, and the cost of the racing program that Pontiac couldn't afford, they bailed out. Chevy being the largest GM division had more cash to compete, so they're still at it, to this day.
      But if you want to see these cars on a more recent coarse, check out Roger Bolingers Trans Am videos. They're really cool. :)

    I believe it should also have the GM 12 bolt rear end, 1970 was the last year you could get the 12 bolt in stalled on a Pontiac Firebird or Trans Am out of the factory .

    • @johnpena9165
      @johnpena9165 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@aldo6192 the first year the 8.5 10 bolt rearend was used was 1970 as a up grade from the 8.2 10 bolt, no way was the 8.5 as strong as a 12 bolt rearend not even close !

    It's beautiful. I'm not a big fan of the rear spoiler on the super-clean looking non-Trans Am Firebirds, but I do like seeing how one looks with fifteen-inch wheels. Quite sure the color-matched Formula steering wheel didn't come out until the disco era, however.

    The Pontiac 400 is not a big block. No such thing as a Pontiac big or small block. Every Pontiac V8 used the same block size from the original 287 incher from 1955 all the way up to the 455. They just kept boring and stroking them to achieve more cubic inches. Some had 4 bolt mains and some only 2 bolt but they all used the same size block. I believe the 1980-81 301(4.9 liter) Turbo was the only exception but I could be wrong on that. A Pontiac guy would know better than I would

    Man, that looks clean. Can anyone recommend good mags or websites for restoration for this car? I recently came into a bit of a garage find (73 formula 400) and trying to get it going. Would love to get it back as clean as this one. Seems to have some odd options. It has the shaker and the dual intakes on the hood. Anyone know if that was a factory option in 1973? Has the black vinyl top with Florentine red paint. Badass car, but needs some work.

    • @M21L35
      @M21L35 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ Rick Piper....I believe in '73, SD 455 Formula's got a shaker scoop like the Trans Am. All other Formula's DID NOT, JUST SD's.

      The engine-turned aluminum dash bezel was std on the TA throughout the entire 70-81 run (with chrome gauge bezels for 1970 only before going to black from 71-81) and IIRC optional on the Formula throughout b4 becoming std on the Formula toward the end in the late '70s...the woodgrain bezel was std for all other models. Don't remember whether or not the aluminum bezel also became an option for the base & Esprit toward the end ..?
