I have a Kemper (and still love it, but it's gotta get shipped out for a repair - footswitches are finally being lame after 3 years) and I have it set up this very same way for the very same reasons you have. I just needed to make sure that if I buy a Helix (to add to my amp tone possibilities, and to have a similar backup rig whenever my Kemper has to get shipped out for God knows how long it'll take to get repaired) I could run the Helix the same way at my gigs. What if I want to use both xlr outs from helix to a PreSonus rack mixer which has (mic/line inputs) Can I set it to line level in the helix without any adverse effect on tone?
Old but still relevant video. This is what I also did on my Helix settings. However what if the FOH signal is too "hot". What options do I have to turn it down? Reducing the output signal in each preset is one option, but is there a better way do this "globally" or some how else?
Hey Rami! I would suggest making your presets at least close to a fully bypassed volume. It will almost always be boosted up but if you are in the ballpark, you'll never have issues. To answer your question, you have a volume in your global eq that you can page to and bring up or down 20db
We had a quick PA test and no problems. All works just like it supposed to work. Wonder why there are so many comments out there where people are having issues with too hot signal. Any way, we are all good to go ...
Hey Steve - thanks for all the help! Question - If XLR is set to mic and going to FOH is there a way to control the level of that signal with the setup you use? Would FOH always be happy with mic level? I'm going to use my Helix live for the first time next Friday. I'll be using your setup with an FRFR on stage for me and XLR out to FOH.
Awesome! They'll always be happy because it's a lighter signal than Line. If by some weird chance they need more, swap to line. But I've never ever had anyone ask for that
Hello Steve Im using helix floor into PC+ , xlr to FOH , L_6 to PC . I notice you use the 1/4" to PC+ and explain how to adjust volume to PC+ How do I control signal strength to PC+ through L-6 link . I use Helix for sound , no PC speakers with new 3.5 update. Would I be better off just using 1/4" to PC as you do on this video ? I am a bit confused on this subject . Thank you and great channel I only recently discovered .
Thank you Steve. This video is so important and its the best way to dial the best tone. I tried this in live and man the tone is like a "house" :))). I go direct to FOH without amp and pedals. Its big big difference in tone. That is a holy grale of helix :))). My question is when I put this settings on helix- XLR on MIC and to FOH, big knob on 1/4, what is the best leveling output patch at the end of chain? Is that 0db output level or is not important? My acoustic patch is +20db but my other patch is -18db. I am confused. Man thank you for everything about helix. You are the first man. Chears
Thank you so much ! I would always recommend using your ears for that! As long as you dont get too crazy with the boosting, the output block should do just fine
Thank you so much for quick answer. Is the boosting when in my IR i go to volume on -8 (-18) because that clean patch is on 0db output volume and other, when i use factory IR volume (-18), my output volume is +16db? Your output level on yours favorite patches? If I heard that the patc in live is in boost what your suggestion is, which parametar to volume down, but the patch still the same, only to ? Down level volume with output, block or chanel amp or...the best solution is? Thanks man. Sorry about my writing. I hope so that you understand me. :)
@@shonesi78 there is no exact answer to that ! I use different methods depending ont he preset. I do not recomend touching the -18 Impulse Response volume though. I usually use channel volume and gain blocks to get where I need to be
Mate, love this tip. Thanks so much. I'm wondering - is there a way to connect the 1/4 inch to a tube amp on stage for my own sound and the band on stage, and run no amp sims on that. But the XLR out to the FOH, run an amp sim on that, at the same time? Whilst using the same effects on both?
I've been using link cable into my powercab and then the out on the powercab to FOH. I guess it's kind of the same thing because the powercab volume doesn't effect the signal to FOH and is has a virtual 57 mic in the output. I just worry that when I don't have my powercab one day, I won't know how to set the Helix for FOH. I should probably use this method and get used to it. Powercab does make it easy. After about 8 months with the Helix, I'm struggling with some of the tones live. I miss a the feel of my amp sometimes.
Valuable tip, thank you. Any thoughts on putting an EQ pedal between the Helix and FRFR? I'd like to tweak my stage tone without interfering with front of house. Can an EQ pedal still work with line level output from the Helix?
You have a global EQ that can be set to whatever output you're using if you don't use it for FOH. You can also make a parallel path at the end with the EQ and send that signal to the cab
Good stuff, Steve ... thanks! When you set the xlr to skip the volume knob, is the defaylt volume setting on max? I always run max volume to FOH and want to make sure max is still being sent if I bypass the knob.
Hey Steve, I'm having trouble with my patches going into a power amp and then a cab. The sounds are all to harsh, distorted and not even close to what I did on the editor.
on topic of the volume knob being moved by the cable. it happened at one show and it was immedieately taped down. This happened at rockfest in front of several hundred to thousands of people. Forunately my cable turned my volume off, rather than up😂
How would you recommend controlling overall volume level on the hx stomp to the front of house? Do you use the channel volume? External volume knob? Lower the output main level db at the end of the chain? I use the channel volume from the amp block but some say to leave it ok 10 for more headroom.
I always advise to avoid controlling the volume to FOH. Have it set to Mic level and leave it alone. If you are sending too hot of a signal, channel volume is your friend. If you are on a gig and need a last minute fix, you can also go to global settings and bring down the volume there
In 3 years I have never once experienced needing more signal. If I ever were to be in that situation, I would go to my global eq and bump up the global volume from there
Hey Steve, love your videos! You're a great teacher! My question is when you switch to your master volume to control quarter inch what level does it set your xlr ( helix pedal) too?
Thank you. This and all your videos are very informative. Especially helpful as I am new to the Helix as my gig rig. My question: When you create your patches for a LIVE gig and volume level them at home, what loudness (LUFS) do you shoot to create them at (-23db, -15db, ??? ), so that when you send Mic level to FOH they have enough headroom to increase or lower you to fit in the mix and give you headroom for Solo boosts, etc, so you dont clip?
Sorry, one addition. So when you get to sound check @ the gig and you have several presets for the gig with multiple snaps with different Channel an output block settings that all leveled to around -12db, what's your go to on the spot overall volume tweek to FOH if its too hot or too soft without touching all the presets/snaps? GLobal EQ Level? Big Knob? Add a gain block everywhere and tweek it? ??? Thank you!
Diggin' this stuff. Any idea how to adjust the output through the USB? I'm trying to use Helix directly into Reaper via the USB but my signal is way too hot. Couldn't find anything in the instruction manual about it.
When the knob is set to Multi/XLR etc. I know when I need to turn down my signal for FOH. But when I disable volume knob for XLR that function isn’t available. How much signal is going through via the XLR out? will it mimic at 12o’clock signal?
GriffinGTR true, i am had issues where my lead went too loud and turn down and once switching to rhym sound, it was too quiet and had to turn it up, its nerve wrecking when you got a solo and everybody looking at you to do you’re thing and hope you don’t have a volume jump or not cutting through the mix
HI - thanks for the videos! I have been trying the big knob at 100% as you and others have recommended. With my IR at -18, I have to keep my channel volumes pretty low in order to keep my levels where the mixer can handle them without clipping... depending on the amp model, it's between about 3.5 and 5.5....That's with my output set to line for the xlr to the mixer (mic level is too hot)... does that make sense to you? So many conflicting opinions/advice... just looking for a reality check. Keep up the great work! Thanks!
Sounds fine to me but the MIC level is actually less output than the Line level. Most engineers ask for mic level. As long as you're not going into clipping and it sounds good, then it is good!
Real helpful man. Thanks a lot. Can you please tell me how to avoid this: I add a block do a specific snapshot and it enables it for the whole patch. I then have to go to each snapshot to disable it. Is it just how it is?
Hey Steve, I am kind of new to this Helix, I have the HelixLT. I notice when I play certain notes and Chords where the low E is played, the first icon (input) Guitar icon, it briefly flashes red in color. I guess this might mean i am clipping but i checked all my levels. The way I am set up for the time being is like this. I go from the 1/4" left / mono from the Helix to the power amp In on my Boss Katana 100. Thanks!
I keep it on Line level so I have more control over the signal using the big knob. If, for some reason, it becomes too hot of a signal, I just dial back the knob rather than change the setting
Hi Steve, Been trying to used the 4 cable method and running the Helix LT into a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe input jack and effects loop. There is a annoying 60 cycle hum when I connect via the Effects Loop. Have you run across this annoying issue and how would quiet the 60 cycle hum? Thanks
I've encountered weird things like this. Try sending from 1 fx loop and returning into another loop. That, or a line isolator box might be needed from the Helix to the fx loop
hi Steve! I’m using hx stomp and canvas walrus for my go-to direct setup, what’s ur best recommendation to set the output level ? I currently run instrument output (hx stomp) setting with Line isolator (walrus canvas) to FOH. and i don’t know if this only me or no, i love the tone when i use headphone out for practice its sounds fuller and harmonic. when i’m trying live, it sounds different 😭 sorry for the long comment tho
Hey Steve, I have set up a FRFR and my amp, out of the Helix I have XLR to the FRFR and 1/4" to the amp. I have set the global settings as BIG Knob to 1/4" and Phones to FRFR. However, the BIG Knob controls 1/4" signal no problem, however I have no control over the XLR volume with the Phones knob, there is volume coming through to the FRFR, but it is controlled by my guitar volume as if its just a straight through signal. I really want to be able to control my FRFR volume from 0 to full. My patch setup is Guitar in and a split out to the two different output types. Please can you help? Thank you
HI Steve! Great video ...but it would be great if you could describe how signal chain (path) in Helix is configured? ... I mean first A path should be set to XLR and the second one to 1/4" ? Could you put it step by step? thanks! Brgds, S.
@@SteveSterlacci Sorry, didn't understand what you meant :( I can see from the video that the first path is set to Multi ...but the second path is started with "send" and end of the path "return" ?
@@SteveSterlacci i know that ... thanks but :) you've mentioned Hot Rod Deluxe to connect to Helix as a second option for stage monitor beside the FOH. ... So i thought you would describe the signal path in HElix how to do that connection :) To recap ... to have stage combo amp as a monitor (HRD) and simultaneously feed the signal to FOH. Hope it is clear now? :)
@@sergejk when the output is set to multi, just sent the 1/4 inch out to the Hot Rod. I've kept it at line level and liked the sound. Multi means that your end signal is being sent to XLR, 1/4 and Digital
Hello Steve, what is the option if the set-up is patches with pre-amp only - no power amp, cabinet, IR's - going out of the Helix to an amp pedal then onto a cabinet? This takes care of the amp on the stage scenario but what about FOH? Is a signal from a patch with a pre-amp only out of XLR's enough for them to work with? Thanks in anticipation.
I am not totally sure of the question here but I think you are asking if you can go to a power amp on stage? I would use an FX send set to instrument level. You can place a ""send" block that will send a signal out to the power amp and real cab, but also pass signal to the end of the chain and go to FOH via XLR. Hope this helps and sorry it took so long to respond. TH-cam isn't showing me all my comments
this can be very useful but my presets were way to loud and clipping the FOH mixer. i lowered all the amp settings.is there another way to do this other than setting all the presests lower volume? im using a headrush moniter now can use the knob for on stage. thanks.
I would always recommend testing your volume against the dry signal with your amp and cab bypassed. If you're clipping a soundboard you've got to turn your channel volumes down. You could also go into your global eq and set it to drop your signal up to -20db
If i was playing in my mancave and i just chose xlr lead coz thats what i have and conected to my headrush 212 is there anything wrong setting my headrush to say 4 and I control my volume by the big knob say around 12 oclock position but tweak either way for more or less volume is there anything wrong using this way opposed to whacking knob to full then having to walk across to headrush and turn up or down? I just found using the big knob gives me control?
I never tried this, but do you hook both at the same time and transmit sound? I dont have frfr unit, i using tube amp runing into effects loop at the back using line levels 1/4 option. Thank you
Hey buddy. I know you have a flood of comments. I’m a new helix user. And I’ve been looking at different resources on this. Some people say use “instrument” for your 1/4” out put. And “line” from your XLR to front of house, studio monitors, and so on. My guitar tech said he uses the reverse. “Line” for his 1/4” and “instrument” as “XLR” outputs. My helix was set “instrument” for 1/4” and “line” to XLR and I thought sounded fine. So, Is this one of those things that’s like “whatever sounds best to you” type of things? Sorry for the long comment!
At the end of the day, yes. Whatever works best for your set up. My thought is to match things up. Something that expects line level like a monitor or floor wedge should get one. Instrument outs to where an instrument would be plugged in. FOH, always mic level for the same reasons
Steve, signal Q: I set up my Helix going into my Powercab 112+ so that my Powercab light is yellow. Then on the Jarvis setting my signal is even at -13.00dB. Then I use the output on the PC to go to the board. The sound guy at the board constantly says my signal is too hot. Any tip for getting my sound balanced?
@@GiantSFaithfuL that could be! Lol cheaper sound boards wont have as flexible inputs. Or he could have an instrument/line issue on his end. I would just lower the speaker model volume i guess. As long as your input is set and you can get to where you want for stage volume. IRs are supposed to be -18 in the PC
I am sending him a mic level signal. Its in his hands to handle the gain structure. Just like a real amp when they tell you "dont touch your volume, its perfect!" I get to do that, and increase stage volume if needed. Let the sound man do his job with the FOH signal
@@SteveSterlacci So it's like a set db amount like a microphone? Im talking about how many db does it send to the house if you make the big knob only effect your 1/4 in outs on stage.
@@SteveSterlacci ok I see. Was just curious about it bc want to do the same except use my headphone out to monitor so I have volume control for both monitors and main out.
@@mrfender5001 I never want to touch the main out to the house because it will affect the overall mix. There should never be a situation where you need to touch your level to FOH unless its asked for. Solo boosting is different though
Depends on what you need. I always add a bit of gain from the amp or pedal and use the channel volume with snapshots. You can use it the same as a real pedalboard too
QUESTION ANYONE,,, Im going to be running a helix stereo out to 2 frfr speakers but i cant decide on 2 10 inch or 2 12 inch,,, i e heard the 12's are too flubby and that the 10 inch speakers are perfect for amp modelers, anyone tried both and have an opinion? Im just scared to get the 2 10's and there not be enough bass,, i have 2 8 inch studio monitors to pasify right now but while theres bass wih music or synth sounds when u try to palm mute or chug it sounds horrible, opinions? Thanks in advance
I think it depends where you are heading to. FRFR I think is better with line, but I e.g. go into a tube poweramp, then instrument level is better to handle
@@shellsjoint you talking about the HX stomp output? Either way it's the same I think. Mic and instrument are the lower output signals. I think they sound better unless it needs to drive a speaker like the Powercab or other FRFR speakers that need the juice
@@davidforbes72 exactly. I found that the return of the fx loops in fender amps didnt make too big of a difference. Either way, I control that from my big volume knob so it's better to have the head room of the Line out (for me). All subjective to our own scenarios!
That's a flawed rule. You're better off sending a line level over the XLR to the house PA because it will travel further with less signal loss and better signal-to-noise ratio
Its not a rule, and its not flawed. It's how the unit was designed to be used. Line level is too hot for some older mixers. In most cases, it shouldn't be a problem. But that is how the units made to be used. I have never experienced nor heard of anyone else experiencing any signal loss or s/n issues with the mic level
@@SteveSterlacci You're fine I'm sure but as a rule the higher signal to noise ratio the better. I would be sending line from here but yeah the mixer needs to be able to take pro levels. Rock on Steve !
I would assume yes. I have not personally tried it but I'll be damned if it that didnt make perfect sense ! I'll look into that as well. Let me know if you try it!
I looked on the back of my Helix and it does say "Digital" above the L6 Link so I'm guessing Yes. My Powercab 212 plus is ordered and on the way. That would be great if it is that way because then I could control Volume of the Powercab without going around the back of the cab when it's leaned back.

I usually use channel volume and gain blocks to get where I need to be
Thank you Steve. You are great great man and incredible musician. You are very profesional. 💪💪💪Thanks man.
@@shonesi78 thank you so much ! Means a lot
Thanks Michael! You would probably need to put the amp and cab last and put a Send block right before them so all your fx go to the amp on stage.
Steve, I appreciate the video! Keep them coming! Question...do you set anything for volume to the Powercab using the Line6 link output?
You can set the big knob to digital for the L6 link. I personally don't though
I always run max volume to FOH and want to make sure max is still being sent if I bypass the knob.
yes! The default is fully maxed out
Hey Steve, I'm having trouble with my patches going into a power amp and then a cab.
The sounds are all to harsh, distorted and not even close to what I did on the editor.
on topic of the volume knob being moved by the cable. it happened at one show and it was immedieately taped down. This happened at rockfest in front of several hundred to thousands of people.
Forunately my cable turned my volume off, rather than up😂
What about USB out to a DAW with the POD Go ( Should have mine wednesday )
All my pod videos are USB to DAW! I think it sounds great
@@SteveSterlacci No tweaking? no adjusting Level output?
@@robmlisanti nope. I leave it as is and get my signal just over -12 using the amp parameters. No post processing on any vids
Steve Sterlacci ok cool 👍😎 I appreciate the feedback
How would you recommend controlling overall volume level on the hx stomp to the front of house? Do you use the channel volume? External volume knob? Lower the output main level db at the end of the chain?
I use the channel volume from the amp block but some say to leave it ok 10 for more headroom.
I always advise to avoid controlling the volume to FOH. Have it set to Mic level and leave it alone. If you are sending too hot of a signal, channel volume is your friend. If you are on a gig and need a last minute fix, you can also go to global settings and bring down the volume there
Ok so do you recommend starting the patch with channel volume at 10 and external volume knob at 10 then if it’s too hot then turn channel volume down?
Hey Steve, where do you normally set the level on your frfr itself? What is your starting point?
Hello Kemper Dude! I start it on 0 and bring it up gradually based on the stage and how loud the band is that day
what if the front of house needs more signal from you? do have to switch back over?
In 3 years I have never once experienced needing more signal. If I ever were to be in that situation, I would go to my global eq and bump up the global volume from there
4:27 happened to me once while using a Drop pedal, I believe I went two whole steps down...ugly.
YIKES! We all live and learn for sure. I have a video with a pretty epic fail that I did a reaction video to. Not the best day! LOL
If you set the large volume knob to "digital", does it control the volume coming out of the L6 link to the Powercab ?
Hey Steve, love your videos! You're a great teacher! My question is when you switch to your master volume to control quarter inch what level does it set your xlr ( helix pedal) too?
It stays at unity gain, which is big knob maxed out. Thanks for the kind words!
@@SteveSterlacci Thanks
Hey Joe ! I usually go with this as a base th-cam.com/video/FmND_EbkRxA/w-d-xo.html and take that into rehearsal
@@SteveSterlacci perfect, thx!
??? Thank you!
On the fly at a gig, global eq volume. Then i would go back to my channel volumes and bring them all down and re match them.
Diggin' this stuff. Any idea how to adjust the output through the USB? I'm trying to use Helix directly into Reaper via the USB but my signal is way too hot. Couldn't find anything in the instruction manual about it.
Thats gotta be your preset volume. Use the channel volume to bring it down
When the knob is set to Multi/XLR etc. I know when I need to turn down my signal for FOH. But when I disable volume knob for XLR that function isn’t available. How much signal is going through via the XLR out? will it mimic at 12o’clock signal?
If you make the volume lead boost video can you also include balancing the volume levels between patches so one is not louder than the other?
Can I send my two XLR signals to FOH and a left and right signal to two backline amps with power amp in? Thank you for your time!
Yes sir. I don't use stereo live personally. Too much hassle if you don't have a regular soundman. Keeps it simpler for sure
Real helpful man. Thanks a lot. Can you please tell me how to avoid this:
I add a block do a specific snapshot and it enables it for the whole patch. I then have to go to each snapshot to disable it. Is it just how it is?
I'm sure Steve will have the answer, but I'm pretty sure that's what you have to do.
Thanks!
Try the input pad in global settings. Should sort you out
@@SteveSterlacci Thanks Steve, that did help, although it still flashes red, but not nearly as much, only if i really pick hard when i play chords.
@@Joop5000 as long as it doesnt sound like its clipping, it should be fine then
@@SteveSterlacci Cool Thanks Steve! Keep the vids coming, love em!
When there is a backline amp - a Hot Rod or something - do you change the 1/4 inch out to instr level? Thanks. I enjoy the channel!
I keep it on Line level so I have more control over the signal using the big knob. If, for some reason, it becomes too hot of a signal, I just dial back the knob rather than change the setting
Steve Sterlacci great, thanks for the reply
@@thpark8189 any time!
Should I run a line signal into the front of a bass amp? Or instrument? Does it matter all that much if the amp sounds fine?
To an actual amp I would run instrument out. If it sounds fine then i guess it could be fine! No reason to mess if you're happy
hi Steve! I’m using hx stomp and canvas walrus for my go-to direct setup, what’s ur best recommendation to set the output level ?
I currently run instrument output (hx stomp) setting with Line isolator (walrus canvas) to FOH.
and i don’t know if this only me or no, i love the tone when i use headphone out for practice its sounds fuller and harmonic.
when i’m trying live, it sounds different 😭
sorry for the long comment tho
I would blame the person who is mixing your Front of House. He should be able to get it sounding good if he is good at his job
Could you put it step by step? thanks! Brgds,
S.
I was thinking I should have added that as well. I use one output block set to "Multi" and then do this. Much simpler than you'd think lol
@@SteveSterlacci Sorry, didn't understand what you meant :( I can see from the video that the first path is set to Multi ...but the second path is started with "send" and end of the path "return" ?
@@sergejk those are just the fx loops in the back of the unit. If you use additional pedals that's where those go
@@SteveSterlacci i know that ... thanks but :) you've mentioned Hot Rod Deluxe to connect to Helix as a second option for stage monitor beside the FOH.
I love how your houses decorations is literally just a bunch of guitars. 😂
Indeed it is 😅 guilty
this can be very useful but my presets were way to loud and clipping the FOH mixer. i lowered all the amp settings.is there another way to do this other than setting all the presests lower volume? im using a headrush moniter now can use the knob for on stage. thanks.
I would always recommend testing your volume against the dry signal with your amp and cab bypassed. If you're clipping a soundboard you've got to turn your channel volumes down. You could also go into your global eq and set it to drop your signal up to -20db
@@SteveSterlacci thanks one more thing my looper with this setup is not coming out of 1/4 in to moniter. only FOH

Yes! The outputs are all simultaneous
@@SteveSterlacci hey Steve. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I appreciate it!

Your output from the PC is probably set to Line, change that to be Mic level and you should be golden. Line level to the PC, mic level to a board
@@SteveSterlacci ok, I found that. It was on mic. The Helix is Line. Maybe my sound guy is just a pain!
If the big knob only affects 1/4 inch outs, then how do know how much signal is going to Front of House?
I am sending him a mic level signal. Its in his hands to handle the gain structure. Just like a real amp when they tell you "dont touch your volume, its perfect!" I get to do that, and increase stage volume if needed. Let the sound man do his job with the FOH signal
@@SteveSterlacci So it's like a set db amount like a microphone? Im talking about how many db does it send to the house if you make the big knob only effect your 1/4 in outs on stage.
Its dependent on the presets level. I keep all mine relatively the same level and its 99.9% of the time a great level for the sound guys
Solo boosting is different though
what's the best way to add a volume boost for solos to existing patches with Line 6 Helix ?
Depends on what you need. I always add a bit of gain from the amp or pedal and use the channel volume with snapshots. You can use it the same as a real pedalboard too

Going out of the helix?
Steve Sterlacci yes..

If you set the large volume knob to "digital", does it control the volume coming out of the L6 link to the Powercab ?
I would assume yes. I have not personally tried it but I'll be damned if it that didnt make perfect sense ! I'll look into that as well. Let me know if you try it!
I looked on the back of my Helix and it does say "Digital" above the L6 Link so I'm guessing Yes. My Powercab 212 plus is ordered and on the way. That would be great if it is that way because then I could control Volume of the Powercab without going around the back of the cab when it's leaned back.
It does. I have it set to Digital and use PC+ as stage monitor via L6 Link and send XLR to FOH set to MIC. Vol knob only affects volume of the PC.
