Shrinking Under Sanctions? The Aeroflot Fleet In 2024

  • It has now been over two years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, drastically altering the international geopolitical landscape. The nation's flag carrier, Aeroflot, has had to deal with the consequences of this military campaign, including the imposition of sanctions and airspace bans. Since our last deep dive into the Aeroflot fleet in February 2023, a few changes have taken place, including the removal of several airframes. There were 173 aircraft listed as part of Aeroflot this time last year, but that number is now down to 168.

    Why's nobody interested in two fresh 737-900er delivered to Rossiya in 2023? How after all sanctions it's still possible to receive new (nearly new) jets in 2023? 737-900? Then those planes were not brand new, the NG variants (700, 800 and 900) ceased production in 2019 once the MAX variant production was fully established. Russia bought second hand planes to a third country, which is not surprising. We might see similar cases happen more as the sanctioned Russian airlines struggle to find aircraft in the future.

    • @user-hu7zc4wf8f
      @user-hu7zc4wf8f 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@osasunaitor it's still strange that it's possible for fully sanctioned country to buy a nearly new (5 years I think is almost new) 737-900er from Indonesia airline without triggering secondary sanctions to Lion Air for those decisions. If we talk about creating spare parts hunger, why it's impossible to create new aircrafts hunger? Russia will begin wholesale purchasing of nearly new planes to support its fleet in flying conditions... and then other third parties will buy previous Russian jets that need maintenance as cheap variant of starting business.
      All this doesn't look like effective sanctions if it's still possible for Russia to buy 5-year 737-900er)))

    Looks like it will shrink even further and from what I can see if they are directly least from another carrier they would be returned to the rightful owner. Likewise if SU had B777-3B5/ER B777-367/ER B777-3F6/ER in the fleet list from another carrier that they would have been returned to the original owners Korean Air Philippine Airlines and Cathay Pacific.
