Halo Series - All Weapon Reload Animations in 23 Minutes

  • Well it finally happened, we finally reached the 100K subscriber goal and to me, it only made perfect sense to "celebrate" with a video about a game series that's both my favorite ever and also the one that basically put me on this path 6 years ago.
    Starting on i still remember losing my mind when i reached 100 subscribers, back then i never imagined that what started as a "dumb" hobby would eventually become such a significant part of my life and i can't be thankful enough for all the support i've gotten from all of you during these years. Here's hoping for a bright future, the road ahead is still long and promising, so let's go for the next 100K and beyond.
    Showcase video showing all the reload, overheat and some idle animations for all the weapons available in the entire Halo FPS series and their evolution over the years.
    Notes:
    * The order in general goes like this:
    1. Combat Evolved
    2. CE: Anniversary
    3. Halo 2
    4. H2: Anniversary
    5. Halo 3
    6. Halo 3: ODST
    7. Halo Reach
    8. Halo 4
    9. Halo 2: Anniversary Multiplayer (TMCC)
    10. Halo 5: Guardians
    * Tactical reloads are only included if they're significantly different than the empty reloads.
    * The showcase is ordered by release date.
    * The Anniversary games are featured right after their original counterparts so their "evolution" is more noticeable. Also, the animation is essentially the same, so it made more sense to me to order them this way.
    * Similar to the point above, H2A: Multiplayer is featured second to last because it's more of a game of its own rather than a reskin/remake/remaster of another one.

      It actually sounded like plasma, which in turn made it feel dangerous. 343s take makes it sound like a digital program starting, like it's a construct in a game, not threatening at all.

      I think he's playing on a higher FOV then the original release intended (70). Corners are cut in 3D animation when things should be off screen, look at the firing animation on Halo 4's shotgun for example. The shell ejects, flies about a foot away, then doubles back, goes through and then under your forearm back into the bottom of the shotgun. Only one shotgun shell exist for these first person animations but you need to fire 6-12 at some point so we get weird tricks like that!

      @@Robosapien_ As someone who does these types of animations (weird hobby yes) this is very much true, and not just for any one game. This is just how 3d animation works. There's some really noticable examples in other games I like to use, like csgo's galil, where the mag is so close to the camera that you can see it the whole time on a high fov. Rust is also a great example of this, since it has freelook, and you can easily see all the inner workings of the first person animations. Squad is a good example of a game that does a really good job hiding it, even *with* freelook in the game. Every game will still have it to some degree though. There's a lot of things that happen off camera in animations to make it look better, or at least I know I'm guilty of it. As for the original point of the shotgun shell; that doesn't apply if it's a particle effect. Some games don't use an actual animation for shell ejections, and instead use particle effects for them, ran via the game engine not the animation. Personally for me, when I animate fire animations, I use two bullet models. This is because sometimes there's two bullets on the screen at a time, so what I'll do is sorta loop them around; one on screen, two on screen, then once the first one is off screen, loop it back to the starting point again, etc.
      Apologies for going off like that, I just think it's really interesting stuff, and I wanted to add my personal experience to it :)

    Funny to think how most of Covenant weapons don't actually need to be "reloaded". Shotgun and Needler reload animations will always be my favorite. Also sniper rifle and AR from Halo Reach.

      Come to think of it, Covenant weaponry tends to be less re-usable than human weaponry as well.
      AK running dry on ammo? Replace the mag, charge the gun, and keep going.
      Covenant weaponry, while they hold exponentially more per go, they’re only barely more useful than a pool noodle once they run dry.

      That’s because Covenant weaponry recharges at dedicated recharging stations, because usually they never run into conflict that can’t be solved with a few bullets.
      In lore, a single plasma pistol round is deadly to organic things. And the average plasma pistol comes with over a hundred of those.
      The recharging stations aren’t present in gameplay because they slow the flow of the game down and it makes the Covie weapons unique.

      @@lefthandrule638 While they’d be a godsend for holding defense, if you’re changing positions frequently, you’d either have a logistical nightmare, or those weapons will be running dangerously low on ammo.
      Soldiers tend to be constantly on the move, from one objective to the next. That’s partially why intermediate cartridges were developed in the first place. The soldier holds more while still having a good effective range, and it only just so happens to be controllable on full auto. Now imagine with the Covenant, having dual purpose pistols with 1/3 of the ammo usually carried by a modern soldier using 5.56mm (overall, not per mag, duh, me...), with said alt mode using the same ammo and more of it, and now they might have to traverse the entire planet to get to the other objective. I don’t know the Covenant’s budget for certain, if they even have a budget, but I don’t think those recharge pods are always conveniently nearby, along with the possibility that they could either be low on battery themselves, or otherwise faulty. Not entirely an issue from a hardpoint perspective, but not ideal for offensive tactics like blitzkrieg or similar.
      Then again I might be overthinking alien logistics and there may be solutions to the above mentioned problems that I’m not aware of.

      That’s the thing; the Covenant never _had_ to adapt to that because until encountering humanity, they never faced any opposing force lethal enough to justify innovation of their weapons, as most civilisations they encountered were in, or close to, a primitive age. This is why Covenant weapons that could be reloaded (like the Carbine) only appeared a little while into the war with humans. Before that, if they ran out of ammo, it was never a problem nor risk to just stick the used gun in the recharger and grab a new one.
      Most of their weapons are inferior and ‘backwardsed’-developed from Forerunner ones (which _were_ able to be reloaded). On top of that, they had access to absurd amounts of resources due to the numerous planets they harvested, and absurd numbers of troops thanks to Grunts.
      On top of that, they only really sent ground forces if there were Forerunner artifacts (precious relics relating to their religion) on the planet. If there was not, there was no problem they couldn’t solve by sending a giant laser from orbit via one of their ships. This is the reason why they don’t immediately default to space lasers in the Halo games; the locations they take place in have Forerunner stuff in them, so they can’t risk damaging them.
      TL;DR Covenant weapons are kind of shitty when it comes to ammo because 1) they were lazy and 2) they were never encouraged to innovate until recently

      Needler is probably the most consistent thing in the series in terms of design. In gameplay, the plasma pistol is probably the most consistent thing. Even halo infinite removing its emp effect still remains consistent with it in halo ce and 2

    Halo CE, Reach, and especially 5 have the most satisfying and detailed reload animations. I've always thought that Bungie kinda lost sight of that when they made halo 2, 3, and ODST ( Still loved them to bits). Glad they picked it up in Reach though. I find It's quite important in a shooter.

      It's does certainly bear an uncanny appearance to a 343 ship design... however what it TRULY looks like is the DOOM 3 shotgun. Same weapon designer, and that's why we lost the "iconic" shotgun appearance because 343 was letting it's employees do their own touches to make Halo "theirs".

      Personally, I think that the overall design, both audio and visual, looks similar to a plastic imitation instead of a hard steel. If John smashed a flood form with a Halo 5 human weapon it would crack and shatter instantly. I feel 343 does not know how to add a level of weight to the weapons which was really prevalent in the previous iterations. I do however enjoy the Forerunner and Covenant weapon designs with only a few falling short of previous concepts. I think my misgivings stem from human weapons sound design, whereas Alien weapon sound design is honestly alien and therefore has no basis in the real world.

    I really appreciate 343 putting in the original versions of some weapons like the SPNKER and Beam rifle cause some of the redesigns were really ugly and I think they realized.

      @@RevXI Agreed. The other weapons look sleek and futuristic but the shotgun looks very contemporary (Reach’s especially). 4 and 5 bring it more in line with the other weapons and make it look amazing (plus the flashlight in 5 is a nice touch)

    Shame they removed Dual Wielding when Halo 3: ODST came out. I really liked Dual Wielding. I especially loved dual wielding my plasma weapons. I would also like to have playable Elites gain. I like playing as a Sangheili.

      This only makes sense when you look into the background of the weapon. You never see it but it has two magazine tunes inside of it.
      How the gun changes tunes once one is empty I have no clue.

      They try so hard to be original with the weapon sounds, making them sound modern. The game takes place in fucking 2500+ stop making US military copy pasted gun sounds from every other game. Bungie did an amazing job designing very recognizable gun sounds, they paved the way and 343 has to be the annoying kid who tries to be original by not following what its predecessors did right.

    the human guns from UNSC are certainly inspired by real guns , here's the inspirations i found:
    M6 pistols: they looks mainly like the Stery M9 , thank to the form of the grip and its absence of hammer , more inclined than the one of a Glock or a Springfield XD. the slide is more like the one of a Desert Eagle in the way it open after each shots. Fun fact, the pîstol M6D of CEA (which will reappears in Halo 5) should really be called a Magnum (and it's really like a futuristic Desert eagle in the firepower appeartance) , unlike the others pistols versions
    M7 SMGs: are mainly based about the FN P90, (which isnt considered like a SMG offically) thanks to their magazines and feeds systems. the concept of caseless bullets is like the HK G11. Has also some ressemblance to the B&T APC9 despite the fact that Halo 2 being released in 2004 and the APC9 in 2011
    MA5 Assault rifles: the MA5 was originally made to have a totally original design , but many people ends up noticing the similarities between the MA5 and the FN F2000 bull-pup rifle.
    battle rifles (BR55): technically the real assault rifles of the UNSC (the MA5s being chambered in 7.62mm). They looks like Chinese QBZ rifles or french FAMAS
    DMRs: fun fact, the DMR was originally made as a semi-auto variant of the BR55. that was the case in the Halo 2 beta demo. so it would be like a FAMAS or a QBZ too but i think they also share some similarities to the Kel-tec RFB
    M90/M45 shotguns: are possibly based about the Winchester 1300 or the Benelli M3 , modern shotguns made of polymer with big stock and pistol grips. the way they loads to the top of the gun seems to be based about another real shotgun i forgot the name (it's called the RMFB it seems to me)
    Snipers: are clearly based about the rifles of the Accuracy International british firm, like the Arctic Warfare or the AS-50
    the machines guns, the grenades and the rocket launcher (althought the Halo 5 one looks like a SMAW) are totally futuristic in the designs.

    The idle animations of the Sentinel Beams in most of the games shows you inspecting a sophisticated piece of Forerunner technology.
    In Halo 5 we see a trained Super Soldier playing with a simple motion sensor. I don't know about the rest of you, but I personally find that adorable.

      What bothers me about Halo 5 is the armor sound when it's moving. God that clacking sound is horrendous.

      Yeah, Halo 5 is CLINK CLONK because the devs were actually trying to make you seem like this large clunky super soldier. It's why the sound design is the way it is. The classic games were way too reserved in that department.

    Never played ODST but looking at this, it was a horror game.

      ODST wasn’t really horror, but suspense. The entire game is in a Covenant controlled city, and you aren’t playing as a seven foot tall titanium superhuman, so you’re constantly on edge. It’s probably the most stress I’ve felt playing a space shooter.

      @@jjhongxina8236 I preferred bungie’s design and atmosphere because it feels like an actual war. Like odst for example if you compare it to halo 5 which I still liked but the campaign was ok, odst mixed with jazz and rain felt like you had a reason to kill the covenant. I still love 343 because of their effort to listen to the community and I think they’re gonna do well with infinite.

    19:01 19:24 The ignition sound of the energy sword from Halo 2 Anniversary is by far my most favorite sound out of all of them. The first time I heard it, I immediately got chills. It’s basically the sound I always hear when I think about the energy sword. In fact all the sounds in Halo 2 Anniversary are the best. But the energy sword is #1.
