    Here in the States the Cleveland dominated in pro-stock drag racing. They were so successful that NHRA kept throwing weight at them until they got what they wanted, a Chevrolet in the winner's circle. They also remained in NASCAR until the FR9 engine came out. The NASCAR Cleveland ended up being a Clevor (Windsor short block with Cleveland heads). But the architecture remained largely unchanged. You could still bolt stock valve covers on a NASCAR Cleveland head. The SBC had the have at least two major cylinder head architecture changes to keep up. It wasn't really until the 5.0 movement when the Fox came out that the Windsor really started to shine as a true performance engine. The parts the aftermarket developed for the 5.0 bolted right into the Windsor and in stock form had 51 more cubes. Add to that the fact that you can go 408ci with a factory 351W block easily and the relative ease of finding a Windsor block vs. a Cleveland now and that's why the Windsor is currently more popular over here.

    Did you guys like your Ugly? I actually looked up the company and am in the market! So, thanks for getting that sponsorship. Anyway, a shaker in the US is mounted to the engine air intake and sticks through the hood the same as y'all. It doesn't even have to take in air. When I was 18 I had a 1979 Trans Am with a shaker hood. The "scoop" pointed backwards and there was no air inlet! If it is affixed to the hood, it is called a scoop. So, probsably the same.

    Hi Al and Woody, love your work. I have been a mechanic for a lot of years, worked on heaps of 60s, 70s and 80s v8 muscle cars and done my fair share of drag racing and built a few race engines. In regards to the axle hop issue with this black XW/XY don't forget to consider the engine mounts, for a simple test of the theory put a cable or chain from the left front of the head to the sway bar mounting bolt and lay a burnout, I have found this to fix axle hop on more than one occasion.

The only thing missing from your vids (rolling shots even better). And don't be shy of really lingering on, getting right in there with some detail shots of the components/customizations of the cars while Al talks over instead of trying to keep Al in the actual frame throughout the whole video. • @BRETTYZCAR
      @BRETTYZCAR 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jp Kalishek obviously the main difference to go along with the head swap is a modified Windsor cam to take the Clevo valve layout . The Boss heads have screw in rocker studs for mechanical flat tappet whereas stock heads have slotted bolt down fulcrum hydraulic setup. Some water gallery mods as well. I have a set of closed chamber 4V heads and some smaller port 2V heads and the 4V’s are massive in comparison. The fords really dominated our early touring car racing in Australia when factories built homologated racing cars for the street. We had a great automotive manufacturing industry but it no longer exists as our government has sold us up the river.

    • @jpkalishek4586
      @jpkalishek4586 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BRETTYZCAR This was a "Stock Parts" class and all parts needed factory numbers on them, and even here in the US, Boss parts were hens teeth and costly as such. What they did was use freeze plugs and some manifold changes (manifolds were not required to be factory) for the water differences. For one version, the 2v heads were best, for the more open class, the 4v head was the way to go. Many of these classes later went with a spec head intake.
      One org went with a touch too much space between the gasket surfaces and the cast in name in the intake runners. A creative fellow noticed the room and shaved the heads and intake right to the names using some odd angles and ran the spec heads and manifold intended for a 351W block on the 302W block. He won 4 races before the Chevy guyd noticed caught on and said "NO." The Sanctioning body then made him put weight in front of the car to match what the difference was. Being as he was a few cubes short, they went with a 351 afterward (the size limit was 360 Cubic Inches, with the 302 they were only getting a reliable 348).
      The next year, the rules stated it must be a 351 block for the Fords.

    Many moons ago (mid 80s), I had a '74 XB 4 door with a Clevo. Was originally a 302 + C4 + BW diff. Someone did the engine first, 351 crank and rods, 4V heads and an Edelbrock Torker single plane manifold. Drank like a fish and turns out it had 8 burnt exhaust valves when I got it. Man it was fun fixing it up and I sunk all my paychecks into it. Learned as I went, rebuilt heads, rebuilt long block, new cam, dual plane Performer manifold, spacer, Holley, 4 into 1s, painted, chromed, high compression. Long story short, it went like the blazes and still got reasonable economy, thanks HP Books. Went through 3 gearboxes and 3 diffs before upgrading them. Oh the memories.
    If only they had fuel injection and all the other modern ancillaries back then. Worst mistake I made was selling it. Very tempting to try again.

    First, in the states, the Cleveland is still the motor of preference, we just use the Windsor more due to costs. W motors are easier and cheaper to come by. If cost is not a guiding factor or concern, always go for the Cleveland. We have tons of hipo goodies for them. Second, a shaker scoop is a shaker scoop. Other non-shaker scoops are "insert type name here" induction. Ram air, cowl, etc. Just wanted to clear up any confusion.

    I think the Windsor caught on here because anything with a Cleveland head was a BOSS model and therefore costs 10 times what it should. Your XYGT is a very cool build.

      Why would you build a car with 4 seats but only 2 doors?

    The XY Falcon GT induction Shaker in the USA was called Ram Air and appeared on the Mach 1 428 and 351ci and Boss 302 Mustangs.

    We refer to them as shakers here in the states as well. Challengers actually have a trim called the shaker or something similar. Shaker hood and all.

    GTHO,s had modified suspension, rear end had an extra leaf in the springs and track rods,sway bar set up with larger brake drums on a Detroit locker diff. The front brakes were ventilated disc brakes with heavier springs and swaybar,also the GTs had a quicker turning ratio steering box.
    They also came brand new from the factory with options like power steering, air conditioning .

    In the US it's also called a shaker hood scoop. For the same reason. We had two versions, the boss 302 like on that one and the CJ, which had a point to go with the hood line.

    1) they call 'em shakers in the usa too 2) glad aussies took a liking to the clev as it's a great head design and now some of the best parts for them come from you guys. love aussie muscle cars.

    That shaker design, on top of being included in our vintage mustangs as people have mentioned, was also used on the '03-'04 Mach 1. I own one and it definitely torques the scoop under load. Also, I love watching some of the Australian "Touring Car Masters" stuff on TH-cam where they still race this sort of awesome vintage stuff. Equivalent to our old "Trans Am" kinda series in the States I guess.
