Today is one of the saddest days in rock and beyond. We lost a musician, a singer, one tough hombre, a legend and a hero. Thank you for all that you have given us all these decades. RIP Dusty Hill May 19, 1949 - Jul 27, 2021 We love you and you will be sorely missed.
I'd heard Tres Hombres for a while then a friend showed me ZZ top 1st album,I gave it a spin while I read the album notes, no overdubs, no multi tracking ,no frills just bass, guitar, and drums .I would put it against any debut album(Arrowsmith,n.y.dolls,Queen etc.).This is a classic.Little ole' band indeed.
Quality travels without boundaries. I've loved the assured bluesey swagger since I was 15, 40 years ago and I was born in a tiny industrial UK town, but I got the cool boogie these guys deliver and I've been telling anyone who'd listen..... keep listening.
A sad day yes Dusty is at peace and with some legends now we will always have him in minds when ever you hear ZZ TOP preform. Like I read on another posting think of Billy, and Frank they lost a brother been preforming, and basically living which each other for over 50 years on the road and not missing a date until now one tough hombre a Texan through and through will be dearly missed.
1068, Lamar Prom with three bands. The TSU Tornados for soul, Electric Prunes for psycadelia, and for rock, who also played our gyms, the Moving Sidewalks,( ZZTop). What a night!
Maybe, the most iconic, American, classic rock band of all time, ZZ Top. A three piece from rural Texas. Dusty Hill was one of the three foundations. Huge loss!
This old music is what my heart craves, and it puts a smile on my face and joy in my Heart. Mr. Dusty Hill, my regards and respect gone here but on the other side now, waiting for all of us to make the trip there. Your music (ZZ Topp) is a part of me, my condolences to your family. That little old band from Texas is numero uno!!!
My first concert at 16 years old, was Rory Gallagher (RIP Rory, Lou, Rod. thanks) opening for these guys in '73. It was about six months before Tres Hombres came out. Back when they were one of the most badass blues bands that ever was. Straw hats, jeans, no beards(but Frank. lol), and BG in a white tshirt w/ pack of Marlboros rolled up in the sleeve(lol). Blues rock, slide guitar nut ever since.
Those pictures was cool! My uncle turned me on to that lil ol band from Texas when I was 13. I'm 42. They're one of my favorite things to listen to. They're very underrated! Just the groove, the riffs, the tone, the composition, the musicianship, how tight the sound is, it's like a well oiled machine! It just works!
You want my opinion? Billy F. Gibbons is on his own planet! The man is a spectacular guitar player, an innovative wizard! He is also a genuine kind person who wants to share his knowledge of music, through his music. I also think his beard belongs in a museum!
Good Lord the pics !! No beards....wow never seen thar before. Billy Gibbons is the coolest SOB alive. I dont think theres anyone alive that id rather sit down and have a beer with !!
Love it! Great photos, too! First time I saw them, they were 2nd billed to Ten Years After. That was 1972 in Lincoln, NE. I'd never heard of them, and they just blew me away! I saw them a few times in San Francisco, after that. Last time was the Degüello tour. _That_ show was cool! They played _She Loves My Automobile_ accompanied by a video of themselves playing saxophones. Awesome!
I love all of your remarks and I hope you’ll enjoy mine...in the Summer of ‘73 a couple of best bro’s are at the old Tampa Stadium to see my favorite group Deep Purple. It was the middle concert of three at the stadium in a 2 and a half months of our Summer as we were 16 and out of school (the first one was Led Zeppelin and the third was Pink Floyd). The 2 opening acts had never been to Florida and were unknown to almost everyone. The “Biggest Little Band in Texas “ was the opening act and Bleu Oyster Cult was the 2nd. Savoy Brown and Billy Preston were the other prelude acts. Preston couldn’t make it so everyone extended their sets and ZZ played the entire Tres Hombres album. As great as Deep Purple was, all of Tampa was talking about those 2 opening acts and we both got their albums (8 track and vinyl) that next day and the shit was flying off the shelves! They rocked it with anyone out there and I was fortunate to see them a couple more times live.
This legacy is just beyond astonishing, beyond words. That's it isn't it? Their music had so much more of everything than folks realize. It's because of the 80's hits, that's way OK though, they so earned that back then. The little band from Texas holding down the end of the alphabet and hanging together for so many blessed decades!
Great track from '71 . You can see why Hendrix rated Gibbons . Hopefully they,re release more of the live recordings from the early '70,s . Loved the band from the first album onwards .
Real quality montage of early pics you have put together here sir ,a fine tribute to an amazing musician .I love Dusty's voice and his ability to punch out the grinding bass is the yang to Billies Ying .Billy Gibbons found the perfect partner early in his career . Now the dust has settled
I had a friend who moved from our little village in The Netherlands to Texas with his parents. One day he wrote a letter to me, which we did occasionally to keep in touch. He was writing: There is a guy painting our house. It's the brother of one of the members of ZZ Top. This was in the 80s. So their big hits were already plugged throughout the world. But, by writing I learned a lot more about their music and waded deeper into their stuff. I prefer their older stuff, but I truly understand why and how it came to be that they went global with the music that most of us know by now. Awesome recording this one!! Thanks for the upload. It adds a lot to the context.
Partied with the Top at the old K of C hall in Kingsville back in '71. Couple of string benders from Hell! Frankie shot a good game of pool, too. R I P, Dusty. FJB
During this time in history, going to Mexico used to be fun. I'm from the southwest and trips to Juarez used to be a blast. Cheap beer and cheap women all amounted to stories that you can reminisce about with your friends. 40 years later, and oh how the times have changed.
Yep,the zetas and cartels own it all now. We use to float out the lower Pecos river then head over to Via Acuna, visit the Mexican Blacbird and drink mescal with the old local guys. We played a drinking game,Flies. Take a shot, catch a fly, then pick a victim to drink a double shot. After a few shots I couldnt catch a 737 but them OG's never missed. Now? F#ck that. Last time we crossed the bridge back to Del Rio, it was open warfare with USA clad riot geared up law enforcement holding back a huge crowd of hardcases trying to get across. Fires,blood,clubs...terrorfying. Not a word on the news the next day. WTF?
