- Woodturning - a happy (?) accident leading to a bit of experimenting in this week's video...who am I kidding, it wasn't a happy accident at all! However, still has given me some ideas for things to try out but this autumn spiral bowl is not long for this world...

Since I started making these videos in 2017, I have been lucky enough to receive the support of some manufacturers with materials to use in my videos. Since May 2018, Chestnut Products have provided me with stains, an iridescent paints sample set, lacquers and waxes. I'd like to thank them for their kind and generous support. Martin Saban-Smith has provided me with a sample set of Intrinisic Colours.
All other products and tools, unless where indicated, have been bought from suppliers at retail prices. Products mentioned in my videos are for information purposes so that viewers know what I have used.
It is always a great pleasure to follow your creative thinking. As always, the result surprises me and I really like your creations. This time again I really enjoyed the bowl before the accident. As for the accident, it allowed me to see that this solid blue line on this autumnal background could presage new creations. Thank you very much for your videos.
Merci Gilles! I will be trying to this again but deliberately next time!
Hello,
Just to say thank you for the information and help you gave so freely gave to me. I now know where to start my research. Hope the holiday was enjoyable.
👍👍.
Frederick
You're welcome Frederick. Holiday has been great fun. A couple more days and then off to Spain for a wooodturning event!
Hi Stewart, another entertaining demo as usual
You know what I'm going to say. "verisimilitude". Your best one yet.
Regards, Bob
Thank you kindly, Bob!
Absolutely brilliant video Stewart. Staying in bed is not an option 🤔 lol
Haha. Thanks Simon. I'd better get up then!!
Thank you for this very valuable video. So much to take away. Big 👍
You're welcome Pam. Glad it is helpful!
👍! Small is Beautiful.
Even with a happy accident!
another great video Stewart, it happens to us all mate. Like the look of the autumn colours.
Thanks, Steve! I would love to find a way to make this repeatable with a better quality cut!
Well done Stuart 👏
Thank you Steven!
You deserve a better turnout with your views. We can always count on you for teaching us how to add color. I'll make a call to the TH-cam suits. Ha
Thanks Robert....all help gratefully received!
Good save! I really liked the way it was going, but it happens.
Thanks Tony. Will have a go again!
As I said once before a long time ago, you have a wonderful speaking voice and would work very well for "digital books." I'm not advocating a shift in careers but something to think about.
Thank you! It's worth considering I'm sure!
Very good work, taking advantage of the error to enhance the piece, I am sure that in the next video you will show us it very well finished, congratulations
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great save attempt. Just needed a snake head on it. Liked the “muddy” blending. I do a paint spiral by coating the inside then dragging through the wet color while it is on slow speed on the lathe (or hand spin). Actually works pretty well. At least better that a spiral cut 🤣.
Thanks Valerie.....a happy accident that might lead on yo some experimentation....I really mean playing......nice spiral.paint idea. I've been thinking of doing a spiral effect with airbrushing too...
The spiral looks kind of cool, Stewart!
Cheers Billy. I rather like it too!
I think it looks nice, Stewart. You didn't ruin it - you just added another design element (even if it was accidental).
Bill
Love your positive attitude Bill
That was a shame but also a happy accident as the spiral looked great.
Take care Stewart.
Cheers, Huw
Cheers Huw! Hope to see you in Cardiff next month.
@@stewartfurini I'll be there. Found out last weekend that Lee, the manager, left a few weeks ago.
Great shame as he was a really nice person and very knowledgeable as well.
Nice and interesting Video as usual Stewart, i really love your blue Spiral Bowl . That´s a cool way to hide an Accident :D
Thank you Christine! If I could do this deliberately I'd be very pleased!
Good video. Thanks
Cheers Don!
I'd have been pleased with that if I'd done it - really liked the blue and stain contrast & I'd have been happy with the spiral too. Cheers, & always interesting Stewart watching your vids . Ta
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it!
Even though I watched you do that , I don't think I could come nearly as close to the beautiful piece you rendered. You must have practiced this quite a bit. The blue was beautiful, but I liked it better before the spiral....😊
Cheers Robert! I like both versions bit it's a shame the spiral ruined it!
looks very good Stuart.
Thanks, Allan!
Good save Stuart, you'll be giving lessons on the spiralling next lol. Cheers Geoff
Haha...thanks Geoff....its easy...anyone can do it!
Happy Accident 🎉 i would have kept that one and put it on the shelf but I know you and I’m sure its another color by now. Thanks for the video.
Haha thanks Holly. You know me too well!
I liked it, I thought it was going to be a funnel but it turned out to be extraordinary! 😊
Haha. Thank you, Ann. Delighted you like it!
Such nice work! I've been using casting reson pigments in homemade shellac. Even glittery ones.
Thank you Jude!
Sorry you had that catch, but when handed lemons …. I do like the recovery. Thank you!
Cheers Doug...now to do it deliberately with a better quality of cut!
I love the spiral! Coloring it really added to the entire dimension of the piece. Our family art motto is "If you cannot hide it, show it off."
Great motto!!
"Wabisabi" us potters would say. The Japanese have great words. Flaunt the imperfection.😊
Thanks, Amanda! Didn't know this word, but it perfectly describes this! Cheers!!@@amandadolby189
I likes both versions. The spiral would have been great as an effect in a '50's sci-fi film. The blue was absolutely the right color choice, it really looked great. As a decorative technique getting a consistent spiral on purpose will be a real challenge. If you perfect a method you'll be in high demand. Wonderfully interesting video as always, thank you!
Cheers Bill. I will be trying to get a deliberate spiral...might take some time!
Lovely colours, quite like the spiral you must have practised that for some time ( lol )
Cheers Andrew...I'm still at the beginner stage of spirals.....haha
ooops never mind you even made that look cool ha ha
Cheers Nigel!
Oops! I've had run backs and I've been impressed with your control of the entry of the gouge at the start of the cut. It happens. Too bad it was at the end after all that finishing. 😢 Nice try with the blue wax. Love your work. Sorry for the oops.
Thanks Keith. Although it was a tad annoying (and I edited the swearing out) it's given me some ideas for new things to try.
I never hollow the middle after finishing the rim - afraid of the oops ruining all my hard work. I'm impressed with your confidence in gouge control.
@@keith726able it normally focuses my mind better....and I normally use a different gouge for the hollowing to this one...got caught out with the different grind!
@stewartfurini It happens to all of us, now and then. We LOVE your work - you are an inspiration to even us experienced turners. Your use of colors and textures is wonderful. Keep on keeping on!
At the edge of seat till end and gone.
Thanks Barry...expect version 2 to come along soon!
Happy little accident.... thought knowing you and your experimentation, I wonder if your subconscious was more deliberate in its actions 🤔😂 The spiral definitely adds a unique element
Thanks, John...I'd forgotten about this one....will have to try to do some deliberate spiralling like this!
That'd one way of getting out of trouble....... or maybe not 🎉
Thanks misstee....might try to do a deliberate one....
wow yes i know it was a balls up but i quite liked it
Cheers Ian....me too!
👍
Thanks Judy!
I bet you can’t reproduce that😳interesting thought 👍
You know I'm going to try.....
