- JAMES ROLFE (AVGN, CINEMASSACRE) - Double Toasted Interview - You may know him as the Angry Video Game Nerd, you may have sang his theme song or watched him since Season 1 or since he's been beating up Bugs Bunny, but although he's known for his new videogame, his reviews of earthbound, Godzilla, Ghostbusters, Star Wars and more ... he's also the man behind the great success of Cinemassacre. Whether it's Godzillathon, or him doing Rental Reviews, or talking about King Kong and other huge properties in film, Cinemassacre has been putting incredible content for more than a decade. We hope that you guys enjoy this interview, and have a fun time getting to know James Rolfe, the man behind the anger, in one of our favorite conversations that we've had on this channel,.
James deserves some kind of lifetime achievement award or recognition from TH-cam, the man is part of the foundation of this site.
He also affected the gaming market, at least a little.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. I love James and the Avgn is a big part of my childhood and teenage years. But he’s honestly not that impactful of TH-cam outside the gaming and reviewing scene. That being said he was a true pioneer
@@unclepalo I feel like he at least helped retro games become cool again a little bit, working together with other creators. Before TH-cam, the retro gaming scene just wasn't the same, and games were dirt cheap.
Plus, I have seen price hikes on sites like ebay after James has talked about a game.
@@isetmfriendsofire Yeah he did. He made retro gaming fashionable. I never even heard of any of these NES games before AVGN.
@@pferreira1983 which in turn is okay. Nes games are still pretty low. However n64 has at least doubled in the past 5 to 6 years

I hate that the era of James Rolfe type TH-cam gamers is slowly fading. I really don't care for seeing these Twitch streamers' green screened bodies floating on top of gameplay of whatevers hot at the moment. Cinemassacre always felt like something that is done from a place of genuine nostalgia and love for gaming, as opposed to just doing it for the likes, subs, etc.
Actually *producing* content is just too much effort for many people. They don't have enough passion for it. They'd rather just pop on the game, fire up the green screen, and hit record. James was a true pioneer. He was a FILMMAKER who loved games, and put the two loves together and has made years and years of incredible work. His kind is truly a dying breed.
It is absolutely not disappearing. It's just buried. I'm part of a community of smaller youtubers who are inspired by the golden era of TH-cam retro gaming. Inspired by AVGN, HVGN, 16 bit Gems, Early Pat the NES Punk, etc. We're around still.

James was creating before youtube existed. I would call most twitch "personalities" convenient opportunists with no talent or skill and the more benign ones are more about a social online gathering than anything related to video games or film production. So no real comparison imo. Just very different things.
@@JONNYSORENSEN_AU those are pretty broad claims, considering you don't know all youtube game reviewer's history. Twitch is a different beast than TH-cam. The youtube market has unfortunately shifted to care more about gaming news and streaming than actual written and produced content.
James is the most humble, down to earth TH-camr. Have been a subscriber since he was the Angry Nintendo Nerd back in 2006. Everything he puts out, not just his AVGN vids are a must watch. He made a video about his favorite cameras. Idk shit about cameras but enjoyed every minute of that video. He's just an all around great guy.
Finally two of my favorite channels cross over. Loving these interviews and super excited for this one.
I've been watching both of these guys for over half of my life so this feels like a long overdue collaberation.

Yup but they just don't follow his blueprint even though it's so simple TH-cam is a job effectively you clock in and punch out when you're done and go back to normal life 80% of people forgot about that last bit and just live online trying to make "communities". That and oblver exposure, I watch every AVGN episode when it's new because it's been a month/months since the last one whereas honestly I'm subbed to people who upload every day I haven't watched in maybe 3 years how can imiss you if you don't go away type deal.
Shit has come full circle now, only need a RLM interview, which would blow my mind.

My little brother James was terrified of Mr Bucket as a child. When I saw the Angry Video Game Nerd make a horror video about Mr Bucket, I showed it to my brother. 25 years later I finally understand why my little brother was so terrified. I almost feel bad for laughing so hard.

Two of my favorite youtubers.
I knew the game existed but I could never play it due to work and well didint have a way to play it. As soon as i heard the Deluxe was coming to the PS i stayed up that night to buy it. I had to be at work the next day so didnt play long but when i got back oh it was done. I had to beat the whole thing. An awesome game derivatively based on a show that i as well enjoyed watching over the years.
James youre the ish. I know things havent always worked out. But nevertheless, it takes a special person to grab ahold of peoples attention an still hold it to this day. A third one? That'll be awesome. Hoping it's either like Doom or an rpg. Hopefully like Doom haha. I beat deluxe last week and really enjoyed it. The hidden characters and abilities really give it replay value and make it feel like a retro game. New retro games are still a big deal so I'm glad James and company finally got it out to console gamers. They did a great job on it and the music is fantastic.

I'm watching Cinemassacre and AVGN for over 12 years.
The last year the channel somehow lost his magic. I think James doesn't have a lot to do with the videos there anymore.
The last AVGN episodes however and the dragon quest timeline were amazing
When James repeatedly said Fred Fuchs [Fred Fucks] in that Dracula AVGN episode, i knew, something was going to happen afterwards. I would have HEVER thought about Gilbert Gottfried. That was such a cheesy surprise!
