How to setup iSCSI on Synology NAS & connect from VM-ware ESXi - 826

  • Overview of what iSCSI is and how it is different from a NFS or SMB share. Setting up a new volume on my Synology RS1219+ and after that, a iSCSI LUN with a new Target,,, testing first from my Windows Desktop and then adding a iSCSI software adapter on a VMware ESXi host and making a storage volume for shared storages to all hosts to use. Finishing off with a speed test.

    My PlayHouse is a channel where i will show, what i am working on. I have this house, it is 168 Square Meters / 1808.3ft² and it is full, of half-finished projects.
    I love working with heating, insulation, Servers, computers, Datacenter, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I'm trying to get the most out of my money, and my time.

    Really cool, didn't know about multiple iSCSI connections. I've always thought that iSCSI was a 1-to-1 connection...

    • @clouddeveloperio
      @clouddeveloperio 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Be careful with what you are trying to do. The multiple iSCSI sessions is not for multiple server usage unless they are in a cluster just like the warning on the screen said. This means that unless you are running a cluster aware configuration which in the case of Windows Cluster is able to coordinate the writes, you can cause issues with data corruption/loss. For multiple server access scenario, you need to use SMB or NFS shares.

    • @StefanoBettega
      @StefanoBettega 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@clouddeveloperio thanks for the clarification. So I must assume that two ESXi hosts without a vSphere coordination aren't suitable for such a connection

    • @clouddeveloperio
      @clouddeveloperio 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@StefanoBettega It appears that ESXi VMFS is a clustered file system so it might work correctly because it locks the individual files but I would not recommend using iSCSI in a traditional file share sense or a disk to an operating system unless you have them configured using some sort of a clustering setup. Here is a link to ESXI + iSCSI for shared storage in case you are interested: 4sysops.com/archives/how-to-configure-esxi-6-5-for-iscsi-shared-storage

    I do prefer nfs over iscsi. Less to configure and works just fine. Recent benchmarks shows that the nfs in some cases outperforms the iscsi, not much, but still. And I do prefer hosting nfs on my two jx40 s2 eternus (2x(12x4tb raidz3) in raid 0, 2x(12x500gb ssd raidz) in raid0) basically raid 70 and raid 50. Speeds are amazing on the ssd pool, but having some serious bandwidth limits, the freenas box has only 1x2 port, 10gbps mellanox network card shared for vm storage, private storage, diskless boot (pxe server for some client pcs and experimental things). But I do have parts ordered for the second freenas server which will act as active backup and will be there for redundancy, I'll firstly test out the iscsi server to see if it is worth upgrading to it :)

    I am having a serious issue with SCSI on windows 10. When I am copying a file from my NAS to another NAS that has an iSCSI volume setup it keeps bluescreening and rebooting the PC with a Windows watchdog error. I can copy smaller files fine but when I go to copy larger video files in bulk it blue screens. I discovered this when I was trying to make a complete backup of the NAS so I could install a new drive and configure RAID. The NAS requires all drives to be removed a restart with no drives and then to have the new blank drives installed to trigger the RAID configuration. I can copy a single file successfully but I am not going to do that to 40,000 files. Any input or suggestions on this issue? I have had this on windows since I initially installed windows 5 years ago and it has not been resolved even in the new 2004 release..

    @10:00 This is by far the most dangerous advice you have given on your channel. See what it says there in Red. You need a cluster-aware filesystem to connect this LUN to multiple servers at once. Most filesystems are not, Btrfs which you plan to use is not, NTFS, Ext4 etc are not. With those you WILL get massive data corruption when using the same LUN directly from more than one server. Must be one of the special ones for the multiple access to work: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clustered_file_system#Shared-disk_file_system
