Exactly from what I know most of the devs on deadlock are dota 2 devs and as a result it shares a ton of the design philosophy from dota. Which is great. Something I'm sure you will talk about in a future clip is the attention to sound design. Valve is top tier when it comes to action and response feel, and that is in large part to the distinct sound queues that convey information passively (passive, as in, over time they are understood instantly/effortlessly). Sounds such as, an ally or enemy dying, killing a minion, and even denying. I think sound design is slept on when we talk about play loops, and how crucial that audible language is to the experience.
This game is so good because it rewards you in so many ways for skill expression. You get rewarded for having skill at shooters and mobas and it has its own unique skill expression. It’s just awesome
About the Range and weapon falloff mechanics: there is also projectile speed, so the closer you are to a creep to last hit the soul the more likely you'll hit it. Meaning being closer is better, but exposes you more.
14:20 Also, every gun is projectile rather than hitscan. They're so fast that they might as well be hitscan when it comes to actually hitting your shots, but importantly if your opponent is closer to, say, a creep you last hit, they will _consistently_ be able to deny the soul. And this plays into the rock-paper-scissors of laning, if you play up close you can have an advantage with meleeing and securing denies, but you leave yourself more vulnerable to harass or even overextending and dying. As a Tekken guy, a few days of laning had me going, "Oh my god, this is just fighting game neutral. Instead of Pre-emptive keepout vs Reactive whiff punishing vs Proactive pressure, it's last hitting vs harass vs pushing." And it's a constant back and forth, constantly jockeying for position, so cool.
its crazy how often the idea of Neutral the way its presented in fighting games applies to other esports. There is neutral in laning for other mobas too, but they play differently depending on the moba or even the matchup. In reality all moba laning phases are just fighting games but with different movement and timescales. Coming from starcraft, it can be applied there as well. There are certain races or strategies or builds that would like to pressure the opponent as fast and hard as possible, while others would rather absorb the pressure and react accordingly (whether with greedy or counter-aggressive play), while some would just apply light pressure to prevent the opponent from moving out and applying their own, more lethal pressure. While in this game, you literally have to ALWAYS be weaving in and out of cover. Between that and everything covered in the video, it blends together in to such a fast paced experience with so much mobility.
Wanting to add some points that are also important. You do not have to shoot your orb after last-hitting. You will get credit unless someone denies. So if you are solo in a lane and no enemy nearby, you do not have to focus on shooting each orb. Another point, for the first 10 minutes you are getting at a minimum 50% of the soul. So if it gets denied, you still get souls from it. But after the 10 minute mark, you can be denied 100% of the soul. Later in the game denying souls is very helpful especially with more people getting wave clear.
This breakdown of the different designs elements of Deadlock explains quite well all these mechanics working like a well-oil machine that distinguish it from any other hero-shooter or moba.

@1e0isfdkorblpg Absolutely true. For some reason I thought the depth wouldn't be there. But the fact that items play such a big difference in how a character is played is really nice. It's not just "Oh I got stronger in X" For example, it seems you can make a very movement based character that gains benefits from dashing and jumping.
As a game dev myself I'm absolutely baffled by the amazing game design of this. It's actually legendary and you explain it really well but I feel like we're still only scratching the surface.
I'm so happy Day9 made this video since I have a friend who just invited me to Alpha. But I also think it's gonna be hilarious in a few years watching this video with all the "outdated" mechanics and stuff
Good video. A lot of the design of this game is really genius. I'm the opposite to the kind of player you are. I find ability spam kinda boring but I love sitting back from a distance and out-aiming people. I out-aim people for the orbs in the farming phase, and then in late game I buy Sharpshooter and the headshot item so I can harass people from afar before they can even get close enough to employ most of their abilities. Makes me a bit less useful in slam jam teamfights but makes me very very good at halting people from just barging right in or doing significant damage to enemies safely before I or my teammates push them.
Tbf, people did try to bring it back. Twice. One of them pushed by Epic. Overprime is gone, and Predecessor seems to be struggling through their initial funding.
OW2 has left a massive gap in the hero shooter space. DOTA and League have left such a moba hole that smite tried launching a $30 version. Man you just really can see that Valve really only releases games when they know they got something special. Valve are seriously under appretiated for their game design. There are so many unique traits in this game despite on the surface it looking like many games that came before it.
Valve at least deserves credit for being one of the few companies that give so much creative freedom to the right people. Most other companies don't recognize the fact that people like games that are actually fun to play, instead they focus on marketing and pumping out as many games as possible. Games like Counter Stike, Dota 2 and etc wouldn't have allowed to be born in the hands of many other companies@@onecentnickel
No one under appreciates valve design lmfao. People still make videos about tf2 design, a video i saw recently was even just about the font in that game. There are documentaries on portals baked in tutorial too and people hold hl2 as one of the greatests fps games of all time
Deadlocks design philosophy is something really missed. Its a bunch of devs working on a game they actually want to work on adding in stuff they think is cool and fun. The stamina system is amazing with so much depth. This also adds skill gaps something game devs have been trying to get rid of for so long. This created skill diversity and creates stuff that is learnable and is easy to see as a difference between a good and bad player. This means learning mechanics can be seen as easy progression rather than just the slow curve of getting from bad to god like aim. I think deadlock will become a massive esports and hopefully will lead to more devs wanting to mimic deadlock design. However most game companies cannot do what valve does because valve is able to make all there money from steam and just make games without worry of monetization. Riot cannot do that riot needs to make money for there investors. Valve does not have investors they are private.

I will admit, I didn't have much fun with this game the first time I played it but I may need to give it another try. Some things that still annoy me are: the character taking up a lot of screen real estate, not being able to see much in the FOV, and needing to wasd and hit the abilities with the same hand (all while aiming). Maybe with more practice it won't feel so bad.
So glad this game exists. I got way into Epic’s Paragon back in the day, which shares a lot of DNA with this (much more so than Smite). Paragon had its flaws but could be super fun just for filling the shooter + MOBA niche. Unfortunately it was cancelled when Fortnite started popping off. This looks like a much better thought out version of Paragon, the movement mechanics look sick and I love the character designs. Can’t wait to play!

1. Yes, and all are projectiles. There are no hitscans (though some guns shoot crazy fast and _seem_ hitscan but no they are projectile) 2. Not sure what you mean, but if you mean shoulder left/right swapping as far as I know there is not. It's always over the right side.
re 2) as I understand, being left side only is on purpose. the map is symmetrical, the map is designed as such that on Your" side, there are more peek right walls, vice versa when you're on the enemy side, so attacking is slightly more risky.
You definitely want to peek right.. peeking left will expose you more and give poor vision. But the map is asymmetrical and accomodates for this. Also this game is FAST.. there is soooo much movement that it doesn't play like OW/CS/APEX etc. everyone is always moving somewhere and doing something. If you are camping a spot you are probably losing pretty damn hard.

Having sworn off League for like, 6 years at this point, the thing that immediately hit me on trying this game was that the initial laning phase was *actually fun* - 4 minutes in and I realized 'wait... I hadn't realized how agonisingly clunky getting last-hits on mobs was, I'm actually enjoying this.'
That last hit and individual levels were two reasons I preferredHeroes of the Storm.
@1e0isfdkorblpg Absolutely true. Things like denying, aggro lane manipulation, pulling, stacking, camp blocking, etc. makes the laning phase so damn fun like even in terrible lane matchups, there is always something you can do to squeeze out a won lane or draw even. Great to see Deadlock has some sort of "denying" mechanic as well.
League is a chinese gambling site, dota is forever
@@pallenda Shame that the HotS team was disbanded by Activision-Blizzard. Now they have to try making Stormgate work, and their 3v3 mode's description sounds similar to a MOBA in terms of victory condition
Wait til this guy get 0-4 in lane. Id say laning is fun when you first dont know what your doing but then when you play against better players they make you feel the misery of being in a losing lane. At least the comeback mechanics are from Dota and not league so youll alway have a shot to win even if you go 2-11 ( its happened 😅)
Deadlock is such an awesome game. The first few games I was not sure but now Im addicted. It replaced SC2 as my most watched game on Twitch
You can’t be getting me hyped 2 years before release
you can play it now and it rules even though it's obviously not finished
@@solarparade what really?? I thought it was invite only for the alpha
@@nharj7674it is, but anyone who gets in can invite their whole steam friends list and so on and so forth. The game is spreading like a disease. Genius marketing
@@nharj7674 It is invite only, but if you really want to play it you just have to find someone who has access. AFAIK anyone can provide you an invite.
@@nharj7674 it is invite only but getting a invite is just going to any community and ask for a invite from anyone
Holy crap! Hero shooter MOBA 3rd person?! So… Fortnite+League of Legends+Overwatch?! This will win.
1:34 definitely sounds like something IceFrog would make
I just played a "couple rounds" today. They took 10 hours. So absolutely addicted I've sooo been waiting for a game like this omggg.
God help us all, it is addicting!
I have 0 experience with any MOBA (I play games like CS & FFXIV) but I'm so hyped for this.
I understand very little at this point, but it's so fun exploring all of the different characters and abilities.
omg the sliding is almost like GUNZ, bro this is gonna be fire
THIS IS EXACTLY HOW I FEEL PLAYING THIS. I went from playing Gunz until it died then playing League until it got overtaken by all the woke bs and finally landed on Dota. This game is literally the amalgamation of all my most played games of all time and i love it.
Playing Shiv feels exactly like playing the male character with how blocky the jump is.
@@Will-zt9xz heck yeah... now confirmed. no heavy, boring valorant movement
Glad you're talking about this game! Definitely (obviously) still needs some work/balancing, but it's already a fun/addictive game play loop, and I can't seem to stop queing up!
A character with an occult spellbook out makes my neurons fire, hopefully I'll be able to get into the playtest sooner or later.
Deadlock is so much fun. Haven’t been addicted to something like this in years!
I'm so happy Day9 made this video since I have a friend who just invited me to Alpha. But I also think it's gonna be hilarious in a few years watching this video with all the "outdated" mechanics and stuff
So glad this video got recommended to me. You are a legend Day9!
In other words, the game allows different forms of player expression to be viable without shuttering other playstyles. That's great to hear.
crazy how ive played this game for 100 hours and still learned things from this video lol
Damn, that's a good video, loving the insights.
seems like a good move to launch this, after Epic killed off paragon there really hasn't been much of a substitute
Hero shooter and MOBA fans have both been getting cheap cash grabby trash since 2016.
I just hope valve gets the anti cheat and matchmaking under control when the full release is out.
@@eduardoserpa1682predecessor is just… BUT WAIT 1.0 is around the corner with no rank 24/7 😂
@@JStackisnt the smite 30$ dollar thing just early acces for smite 2?
@@JStack This isn't really a hero shooter tho. It's a full-fat moba. In fact I wish OW2 had gone the moba route. There were people trying to create a moba mode in the OW Workshop, but that tool is so limited it doesn't quite let you do XP, levelups, or even towers or custom maps.
"lol, why does the title say how to play? Everyone is saying it's a hero shooter-should be simple enough."
DayJ: "It's a MOBA"
Oh shit, it's a MOBA.
Man you just really can see that Valve really only releases games when they know they got something special.
Their work ethic of being able to work on whatever project you want to might harm the quantitiy of stuff coming out but man the quality is through the roof.
You can totally tell how much love they poured into this developing all these awesome mechanics.
5:40 "which often times adds up to 8" Day[9] being the math genius he's always been!
I am sat just waiting to play this since I saw it existed. I don't know if it will be weeks or months until I get the opportunity to play. The feeling I'm getting is like waiting to see someone you miss. Been a long while since I've had that with a game. God I want it.
Valve are seriously under appretiated for their game design. There are so many unique traits in this game despite on the surface it looking like many games that came before it.
not valve, icefroggy frog
@@onecentnickel yeah he developed the game completely by himself
@@Crowbar yup, exactly
Valve at least deserves credit for being one of the few companies that give so much creative freedom to the right people. Most other companies don't recognize the fact that people like games that are actually fun to play, instead they focus on marketing and pumping out as many games as possible. Games like Counter Stike, Dota 2 and etc wouldn't have allowed to be born in the hands of many other companies@@onecentnickel
No one under appreciates valve design lmfao. People still make videos about tf2 design, a video i saw recently was even just about the font in that game. There are documentaries on portals baked in tutorial too and people hold hl2 as one of the greatests fps games of all time
Wow an actually GOOD video about deadlock!!!
At first I was like "Isn't this just Paragon?" but the unique mechanics and the way it all interacts is actually pretty cool.
played my first game today, the creeps are dangerous if you aren't careful. they deal serious damage to you.
Day9 explains this game perfect and in a way that I understand so well.
I started out on the fence with this game, the slow movement and less dependence on aim made me wary. It's grown on me now, great game.
I was looking for a dummies guide to this game. Thanks!
1+2+5 DOES often add up to 8!
Never heard of this game ! Looks fun af
It's not even announced we all playing alpha versions and it's addictive as f
I can't wait for the return of Day9 dailies that follow Deadlock matches.
Always love it when you explain things
This reminds me of my favorite game Monday Night Combat and Super Monday Night combat. I'm playing this as soon as I can
Deadlocks design philosophy is something really missed.
A bit late to the ship but this looks fun, can't wait to get an invite
Gears of War fan? Pick up the Tier II item "Active Reload" and have fun timing those reloads to get health regen as well as cutting those long reload times by more than half!
Minor correction: Counter-Strike has Damage Fall-Off. The AWP is the known exception.
dmg drop off starts at 18M
last hits give half souls on kill before 10 minutes, after 10 minutes the entire soul value is in orb making denies really strong after 10min(souls are only split between 2 people)
Grey Talon is a HE
Tbf he looks like grandma at first glance
I will admit, I didn't have much fun with this game the first time I played it but I may need to give it another try. Some things that still annoy me are: the character taking up a lot of screen real estate, not being able to see much in the FOV, and needing to wasd and hit the abilities with the same hand (all while aiming). Maybe with more practice it won't feel so bad.
SWAP abilities keybinds and you will be good
this looks intresting never heard about it untill this video popped up in my feed
Can’t wait to play!
really wish the game will have more visually distinctive UI for different abilities and items.
Its literally on prealpha the game could look completely different than it does right now, most things are placeholders
Super excited to see valve developing a new game! I pretty much don't get excited for new games because its hard to afford paying for new games, so I'm waiting for sales usually (I guess a moot point because odds are Deadlock will be free).
Point is, Valve is a company who's games end up being high quality and there's an overwhelming chance I will not be disappointed whenever Deadlock comes out!
Game looks so fun. Some great design choices that makes me want to get back into MOBAs. Wish I had access to the playtest.
monday night combat was like 20 years ahead of its time, lol
Hope this goes to open soon this looks so fun with lots of depth
Concord was released at basically the same time is this game. They never had a chance.
And Marvel Rivals also was doing betas and releases in december, Concord had no chance of doing well even if it was a good game
concord was not even free to play ., doomed from the start
@@MrRafagigapr Exactly this. the era fo MOBAs showed us if you try to give a game an upfront cost, even fi it comes with all of the goodies, all the unlocks and content rich, something gamers swear they want, they won't buy it in favor of the free games.
Was getting hyped for this then realised it's in early development and probably won't be out for a long time :(
From what i played almost everything in the game seems finished. Wouldnt be suprised if it gets public release very soon.
I love the vaguely Dishonored-esque art style. Can't wait to see more as it develops.
Dishonored art style... Hahaha young one!
Dishonored had art designer who worked for Valve, making half life 2!
A lot of good things branched of Valve.
@@zbigniew2628
Well, that might be the case, but Half-Life 2 does not share an art style with Deadlock or Dishonored.
Th timing of this video is hilarious I was actually just going to look for a synopsis wonderful
Interesting breakdown; thank you!
I’m really excited to get my hands on this game
"In the simplest description, it is a moba that is a shooter." Lol my non gamer gf was sitting next to me watching this, "THAT'S THE SIMPLEST DESCRIPTION???"
I'm getting so jealous and almost bitter waiting for access to try this game 💀
I've been waiting like 4 days
Woweeeee 4 whole days!
As if things weren’t already going bad for poor ole Comcord
great video, next time might want to wait for the 2 week massive patch to release since wall jumping got added lol
Thanks for nice explanation of what this game is. All the other stuff that was suppose to explain this game was anything but that... Not exaggerating by typing "deadlock explained" not a single video with that title did an explanation except yours, they'd just ramble some nonsense. Thanks again
I thought this was gonna be a breakdown of a new Hearthstone deck. Like a new Warlock archetype. I don't like this kind of game and will never play it, but it was interesting and entertaining to learn about it!
This is the best TF2 custom server I've ever seen.
Great guide, thx.
So @ 5:18 you're wrong... the ability gives 1 Health Regen and that 1st node ADDS 1.5 more ... so it's 2.5 Health Regen.
Superb breakdown
so it's like monday night combat
I just pray to the god almighty that the success of deadlock does not encourage valve to put dota2 in maintenance mode
It’s like Dota and Smite had a baby that has a propensity to love noir-detective films and shoot Guns.
This kinda gives me GunZ vibes with some TF2 and GoW mashed in together
Amazing in depth game design.
Got some questions:
1) the character weapon bullets, are they a screen traced? are they a trace from the actual weapon to the point the screen trace is looking at? etc?
2) can u switch the side your character is standing on? cause this will cause players to always choose the left wall to hide behind as they can pre-peak the wall.
1. Yes, and all are projectiles. There are no hitscans (though some guns shoot crazy fast and _seem_ hitscan but no they are projectile)
2. Not sure what you mean, but if you mean shoulder left/right swapping as far as I know there is not. It's always over the right side.
@@FearTheDeep Is every weapon a "gun" or are there also slower projectiles too?
re 2) as I understand, being left side only is on purpose. the map is symmetrical, the map is designed as such that on Your" side, there are more peek right walls, vice versa when you're on the enemy side, so attacking is slightly more risky.
Why do the minions HP bar flash when low? like a melee will auto kill it or something?
The game has looked very fun, and at the same time it's very frustrating that by the time I can get my hands on it there will be players with HUNDREDS of hours in it already.
There are going to be a lot of casuals too.... Anyway you can play it right now by looking for an invite on their discord or steam communities.
@@zbigniew2628 Currently I believe you can only get in on referral from someone who was in the first round
Love this game, feels so fresh
!!!!! looking forward to more! so good! so good
Deadlock was a top down RTS game from the 90's. It used to be my favorite. What is this new Deadlock? Is it related in any way?
