  • Q&A session led by Swami Sarvapriyananda at the Vedanta Society of New York on Jun 18th, 2023. List of questions with timestamps:
    0:00 - Intro
04:17 - All knowledge depends on the knower, known, and instrument of knowledge, yet we are taught that we are none of these. How can this be reconciled?
19:48 - If science can be used to know the self, does this mean that Vedanta is not a unique instrument for self knowledge? How can science be used for the study of something without objective qualities?
30:24 - How can we remove doubt? How is one guided to know Brahman clearly and continuously?
46:43 - How does one become a monk or nun?
48:56 - How do you explain the problem of evil within the realm of consciousness?
01:01:00 - Is Purusha the same as pure consciousness? When we say “I am imperishable”, how do we know?
01:09:00 - Is consciousness everywhere, not just in living things? What is the glue that binds Brahman and Maya together?
01:18:35 - We are told we are one consciousness. Where does Karma come in?
01:25:49 - Will the witness, sakshi, register anything?

    ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
    ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

Each "Ask Swami" episode is an eagerly awaited event and Swamiji never fails to elevate and enlighten. To me, the show also gives a feeling of connectedness with seekers from all over the world. Though there are a number of questions and answers in each session, the common thread of Advaita helps in reinforcing the central concepts again and again from different angles. Thanks to Swamiji and the Vedanta Society of New York!

When you look for the "I" and you don't find it, it is because the "I" has found itself in pure consciousness.
Thank you Swamiji for sharing these precious and luminous words.

Always an enlightening talk, the questions asked and the answers and guidance Swami provides. Thank you!
At 48:00 Swami tackles the question of evil again, and mentions (as he has before), at 52:00, the book *The Problem of Evil and Indian Thought* (it's not "in" Indian thought). Anyone looking for this book--the actual paper version--will face a challenge. There don't seem to be current editions of the book. Various original copies are out there but they are expensive (I'm not going to pay $80 for an edition, plus shipping, for example). I use soft copies/e-versions, but I'm still a person who likes to sit down with a book. As well, this is the type of topic where I don't want to be reading the bulk of it through a screen.
You can find a copy of the book online, gratis. I found the First Edition: Delhi 1976, printed in India (in English). It's about 343 pages. I sought out the cheapest printing in my city (which happened to be near the major university, no surprise; cheaper than the city's libraries and any other printing outfit), put it on a USB, and had it printed. I even enlarged the pages so it's a little easier to read, and did 2-sided printing. With a clear cover and a nice back, and the "good binding" (coiled), it came to under 20 dollars. Cheaper than if I tried to get my hands on any edition I've seen online, and they are rare. (I'm surprised even my city's local library didn't have a copy of this, they have everything.) I should have done this sooner! Eager to read it, even just looking at the table of contents and skimming some of the content. Now I can sit down with the book and really dive in. And I have the PDF that I can have handy when I can't carry the book and have a moment to read, am waiting for something or someone etc. Cheers

It's cristal clear yet the questions ll arise later in time. That's why continuous hearing, dwelling are the prescribed sadhana in Advaita. In yoga/samkhya asanas and meditation are the prescriptions. Combining both is satisfactory because if I can't practice Meditation (samkhya) due to some urgent work I can still hear these teachings while driving meaning one way or other I am keeping track of my Sadhana pranmas swami🙏

I have it, this answer too.
Akoshic Records are completely different and unattached to Virtual Reality. Virtual Reality is an alchemical process. Akoshic Records are sensory vibration of memory filter. With common and dissimilar outcomes yet the average experience is vastly paradoxical as compared.

A spiritual journey and a spiritual practice. Experienced in this world of good and evil. Samadhi the journey or study; is a quest. Sadhana the practice or activity is dharma based. The possibility or opportunity anywhere dharma exists is attached to the light of modern sadhana. This is both good and bad. Therefore Samadhi is both good and bad. This is karma based.
Duties and the pair of attachment and release this is samadhi. Dharma. So therefore karma comes from dharma.
Action and consequence. Now, good and evil.

Swamiji’s explanation of Sat and Chit aspects of Brahman while answering the question how do I always be one with Brahman was excellent.
But there is a third aspect “Ananda” - this cannot be just ‘understood’ intellectually. Lord Krishna crearly calls out “sukham atyantikam” and “aparam labham” - supreme bliss and gaining which no other gain is considered higher.
This means the person who has “achieved “ the one ness will also experience the supreme ananda.
Consequently if somebody intellectually claims they have understood the one ness without an iota of doubt, still feels not unfulfilled, then it is back to the drawing board.

I just read a quote by quite an eminent historian [George Grote (1794-1871)] who says, "In the natural process of growth in the human mind, belief does not follow proof, but springs up apart from and independent of it; an immature intelligence believes first, and proves (if indeed it ever seeks proof) afterwards." My question is what it means and whether there is any contradiction between this and the teachings of Advaita Vedanta.

Meso American Yoga. So like three empires and a vast wilderness of tribal totems. Then this Yoga and a Confederation of Totemic Knowledge. The wilderness of Totem is the four corners of the Tantric Scriptures. The Great City Square of Akoshic Splendor. These Four Corners.
