The way I understand it Stiegler had an instructor during his training that told him and the other pilots to be that if he ever heard that any of them had shot an enemy pilot that had bailed out and was descending in a parachute (one of the most heinous things you could do because it could lead to similar behavior from the other side - the morality of it, of course, being a factor too) he would shoot them himself with his sidearm.
Stiegler said when interviewed later that he viewed Ye Olde Pub and it's crew as harmless much like airmen in parachutes and so he could not bring himself to shoot them down. In addition to his personal history with his brother that was shot down as is mentioned in the video influenced his decision to show them mercy.

And Stigler didn't really have an instructor. He WAS the instructor. He was a professional pilot before WW2, and initially served as an instructor. He famously taught Gerhard Barkhorn, the second most successful ace of all time. And he almost failed him too.

Some more informations about Stigler: His officer Rödel said to him in Africa, 1942, if "I would ever hear that you shoot down an parachute I will shoot you.". Franz has 27 aerial victories when he met Ye old Pub, one more bomber and he would have passed the "magic 30" for the Knights Cross, after the incident he changed his view at the war. He kept fighting against bombers (he said it was his duty to stop bombers destroying Germany), gifted most of his aerial victories to other pilots because he knew they would die soon and took part of the legendary JG-44, led by the more legendary Galland where he lost his friends one by one, flew with the Me-262 and became an bigger ace. He surrendered to the Americans in 1945.
In the war he lost his dad, his brother, many of his friends and saw young pilots dying, he also saw the ace Steinhoff being burnt alive.
Franz was also the man who teached the ace Barkhorn.

The events of history are the stories of ordinary humans caught in extraordinary circumstances that cause them to react in stunning ways. Sabaton taps that human experience no matter the circumstances, war is conflict and each person reacts to it and those that survive it respond to it differently. Lost to history, Sabaton takes those dusty history books and makes you experience the valor, courage, fear and brutality that those events brought out. Opera is a great example as each of their song touches those that hear it, some more than others. As a vet who fought in Viet Nam they stir my soul and touch on many of those emotions that we went through and remind me of the many friends and foes whose lives were cut short by that conflict. Here compassion for a crew that literally was in a parachute desperate to try and make it to safety, there is no honor in getting a medal for killing hapless foes. The videos show the ripple effect all our actions in life have, that one act meant how many families are around today because of the mercy he showed. Franz got something much better than a medal he got a friend and a Sabaton song, one could not ask for anything more!!!

He didn't fire on the Pub because of what his commander and mentor told him. "If i ever find out that you shot a man in a parachute, I will personally shoot you down myself." Franz Stigler saw the Pub, noticed it wasn't firing on him, saw how badly damaged it was, and thought of the Pub as a parachute and just couldn't pull the trigger.
It was the knights cross, not the iron cross.

The B-17 was a very rugged air frame and could take punishment beyond imagination, but even still so many of them were lost during the war. There is a memorial for the lost crews at RAF Duxford called "Counting the cost". Nine foot tall plexiglass panels representing each month of the war with some panels covered entirely with the silhouettes of B-17's and B-24's that never came home.
    It's humbling.

One of the biggest mistakes people can make about war from history is assuming good and evil was as plain to see as black and white. You are not defined by current politics nor your country's leadership. In the Civil War, there were Southern Unionists like Newton Knight who fought to free slaves, despite being considered Southern; and there were people up North known as the Copperheads who supported slavery, despite being Northern. And just like this Luftwaffe pilot demonstrated, many in the German armed forces did not support what Hitler was doing, and refused to be the fanatical radicals he demanded them to be. You decide whether or not you make the honorable or ruthless choice.

Sabaton's music is highly emotional and several songs bring up deep emotions in me. This and their version of 1916 by Motorhead genuinely bring tears to my eyes.
I go to a lot of opera too and in many venues - mostly because I have the privilege of living in Germany.
One of the events that brought me to tears in the opera house was a staging of Verdi's Requiem at English National Opera in London.
The ending had a warning that they would turn out the safety lights at the end.
It was a superb experience but the end had the choir and soloist(s) holding candles and singing "Libera me" - slowly as the voices stopped they snuffed out their candles finally there was one singer singing and then her candle went out and she sobbed the final line. You could hear the genuine sobs in the audience and over half the audience when the lights went up were crying.
Opera can be emotional but it can be funny and telling deep stories etc.

Very well put. You’ve had some great experiences it sounds like. I was at the performance of the Verdi requiem in memory of Dimitri Hvorostovsky and I’ve never had an experience quite like that. The power and reverence in that music is unmatched. Sabaton has been a big part of my listening so I’d like to dig deeper into their rep, the power metal and their more melancholic music soon.

Our local Landestheater (in a neighbouring city)
did the full ring over four seasons - one opera per season.
They then did all four operas in a week
Saturday night - Das Rheingold (set in the French revolutionary period)
Sunday evening - Die Walküre (first world war period)
Thursday evening - as that was a public holiday - Siegfried (set in the sixties - as the hippy wild child)
Sunday evening - Götterdämmerung (set in the near future)
It was fantastic seeing them all back to back so to speak.
BTW I tend to go to opera in a leather jacket and jeans with boots
and when I went to Helsinki Opera House to see
John Adams' ""The Death of Klinghofer"
and as it was -10°C outside - I went in a pair of thermal camo pants.
I notice several folks in the audience looking like me
and they were looking curiously at me.
It turned out they were members of the chorus who early on in the opera
      "hijacked the opera house"
Opera and also for me theatre are fascinating arts which I enjoyimmensely
as well as punk, hardcore, post-hardcore, metalcore and other forms of live music.

My home town Huddersfield had and has a Contemporary Music Festival
and when one year my mother went to hear a talk by Elliott Carter
(the grand old man of American modern music - though not an opera writer)

(My mother is a source of stories about saying things - I once threatened to turn her into an Alan Bennett monologue after her death)

Every German soldier, regardless of rank, service and branch of service, could earn the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.
It was therefore only awarded around 7500 times, and the requirements were very high in order to receive this award.
There were also 4 more levels: Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, awarded 863 times, Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords, awarded 147 times, Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds, awarded 27 times.
The highest two awards, the Grand Cross to the Knight's Cross and the Golden Oak Leaves with Swords and Diamonds were only awarded once.

We'll, let's be clear here. Bombers in WWII (and most combat planes in general) were designed to be able to fly even with essentially half the plane missing. You could lose half a wing and part of the tail, and there's even a story of one continuing to fly with half of each wing gone, and continue to stay airborne so long as your engines were able to run at full power. Some planes made it back home with only two engine running, some with one failing just as it reached the runway. These things were engineering marvels.

Minor correction… VERY minor because I’m no expert, so maybe I’m wrong, but I *think* this is correct… and just want to comment to keep the story straight. It’s not the Iron Cross. It’s the Knight’s Cross. And the reason I’m so hesitant about this correction is that I *think* the Iron Cross is the overall term. Soooooo… the Knight’s Cross is a “level” of the Iron Cross. I *think*. So, you weren’t, technically, wrong in suggesting that “the cross he deserved” was the Iron Cross. It’s more a distinction of specifics. I *think* Stigler actually missed out on the Knight’s Cross. VERY minor correction.

Stigler was awarded. He was an ace and he had awards reflecting that. But when he spared Ye Olde Pub he was one bomber kill away from the Knights Cross, the highest award in the German military. And after this, he wouldn't report his victories, as he believed the Cross was a macabre measure of how how many lives he'd taken.
He'd instead attribute his victories to the young and poorly trained pilots that died under his command without any victories.

Why bother since nowadays all you need is a self guided missile from several miles away and that’s well it, unlike wars of the past where they were personal they were face to face and this isn’t to say that that doesn’t happen it’s just that it happens less now than ever, since the code or honor of war is lost replaced with cold efficiency, there’s little room for things like say letting the enemy go or even an entire army leave due to the nature of modern warfare

Yes, we can't imagine a war as massive. However sad it might sound, man has a tendency to startle what atrocities they can commit. If that is money or faith, war is inevitable with present day mindset. 😑

It's like Garabaldi said in an episode of Babylon 5, "until we start referencing historical ages by the peace times and not the wars, nothin's gonna change."
