Your reviews of high quality knives that are budget friendly is so very appreciated. I’m a disabled veteran who enjoys collecting knives, but as you can imagine, I’m not on an unlimited budget. It makes me so happy to be able to add a knife like the raccoon or the D2 RAT 2 to my growing collection that are special. Getting a better steel at a budget price is just the thing I’m looking for, because I enjoy sharpening and I’m interested in how different steels behave. Knife nerds of the world unite! I might be able to convert the wife to let me add this one, but we’ll see…anyway, thanks for the reviews and giveaways, because they really help. Merry Christmas!
If you're interested in knives with premium steels at lower prices, I'd recommend checking out the new ontario RAT 1.5. It's a bit bigger than the RAT 2 (in particular, it's in between the RAT 1 and RAT 2), and it uses Magnacut steel. From the testing I've seen, the Magnacut is heat treated exceptionally well (63-64 HRC) and, if you know where to look, you can find the knife for 90 bucks before tax; it is the cheapest Magnacut knife on the market that I'm aware of.
I’ve been rocking the S90V Pyrite Light for almost a month. It’s awesome. I did test the Rockwell and it is 60.75 HRC. It’s worth every single penny of that money. I hope they continue to do it.
My S90V came on Xmas eve… I got it with an additional 10% first time order coupon. Not wickedly sharp out of the box… and hear it is not a good idea to strop this steel since it benefits from a toothy edge vs polished.
At the end of the day, a quality well built properly priced budget knife usually end up being the most used/most enjoyed knives in our collections, tools rarely need to be be overly expensive to also be effective, with that said the budget knife is should and for me will always be a main staple for edc carry etc…
I was honestly surprised how many budget knives were in your collection. Merry Christmas. Ps... my wife says that after all the holiday knife purchases, I'm not allowed to watch any more of your videos! (I'm still gonna watch.)
There are husbands who are interested in alcohol, gambling and other women so the affinity to knives should be the least of her worries (at least that’s what I like to believe to feel good about my own addiction :-) )
CJRB, I'm begging, do the rose gold blade with a black thumbstud, and a black handle with rose gold hardware. You did it for the alt, bring it to the light. Please 🙏
I think the purpose of the secondary plunge lock is to prevent accidental actuation of the button when you're using the knife, as opposed to making the lock stronger.
I bought the pyrite light a few months ago and really enjoyed ….. i gave it to a friend that doesn’t carry a knife and he LOVES it …. I will be picking up another in the future.
8:55 Yeah, I admit it. I rather like Spyderco knives with sweet steels and FRN grips (I tell myself that gun frames are made of polymers of that grade, which they are).
For those of us that want a knife to be a knife and cut things well, prioritizing the blade steel with a perfecty adequate and durable handle material makes makes more sense than a knife with cheap steel and a "fancy" handle.
Just received my Pyrite XL in the mail today! Very excited that my xl mitts gets to edc it at work after the break. Bought the original Pyrite Light for that reason, and it was ok on comfort, but felt just a tad too small for using with gloves, which I’m often wearing while breaking down pallets and stocking grocery. We’ll see how the XL does, and report back. Meanwhile, I’m on the hunt for someone to get the first one…
I just wish they would put captured pivots on all models, actually affects my decision when buying cool budget knives , I usually end up choosing Civivi. Cjrb pivot screw will get loose eventually have to adjust , never have to with Civivi. I know it's silly but that's the stuff I pay attention too nowadays after many bad purchases
The tan and green handled versions of the Pyrite Light Large have G10, BTW. I got one of those. Nice knife. When it comes to promoting this safety mechanism, CJRB seems to be focusing on the fact that it keeps the blade from accidentally opening in your pocket. To me, it doesn't hurt anything. I didn't have any problems with it engaging without me intending it. However, they shouldn't just put a crossbar lock on the Light Large. They do a good job with those.
I don’t think that secondary lock is to add strength. I think it’s there to prevent accidentally releasing the lock when gripping the knife in use. Just my thought.
The choil on the Pyrite Light XL looks to be bigger than the regular Pyrite Large. Wish they'd gone for a drop point and smaller choil to maximize edge length.
@ from what I could tell, it’s basically AUS-10A, but with a full 1% vanadium, a bit more chromium and a TON more molybdenum Should be just as stainless at AR-RPM9, while having edge retention similar to D2 So just a better VG-10/154CM, trading in a tad of toughness for the stainless and edge retention In theory at least Really cool tho
@ check out BG-42. Almost an identical formula, just spray form. CRK used it a lot before he collaborated with Crucible on S35VN. I sharpened it straight away and have been using it for about a month. I’d call it a S30V/S35VN level steel. It’s good.
@ that’s super cool to hear Will do! I realllllly want that Prado now It’s been my EDC since it’s come out, swapped out with my Vision FG every other day Just got a Damascus Vision, so this could be my other new EDC lol
I'm with you on that! I just finished the video, and I vividly remember him saying that IS the official name for it!! Soon as mine arrives, I'm putting in baton mode and walking into the woods! This is gonna be fun....
I got the white Pyrite Large and dyed it red. Pretty cool knife for sure and the secondary lock doesn't bother me. Am curious if CJRB will dabble with a top liner lock version in 2025 or stick with plunge.
I was really hoping we would get the Large Pyrite Alt, before we got the Large light. I have the Large Pyrite and the Frack but we really need the Large Alt before anything else
Wait, wasn't that the artisan cutlery video with the 2 plunge locks that failed? It wasn't a pyrite. Has the original pyrite with the one plunge lock ever failed the spine wack test?
Not to endorse making knives LESS safe, but I'm sure it would be a simple thing to take apart the knife and remove the secondary safety. I imagine it would just function as a normal button lock then.
Question - Are they adding a second lock because they can't get the main lock strong enough? I don't understand. If it's not a heavy hitter then why have a second lock that you say is not much stronger? Do I need to get rid of my Pro-techs because they don't have a secondary lock? I think the second lock is cheese.
At around the 9:40ish mark I'd just like to say, "I'm in the just simply can't category"... So free is my budget on all knives atm and I've been extremely lucky in having won over 20 knives on IG and Facebook last year... Unfortunately nothing won from you yet but I'll keep trying!!
Instead of making 40 versions of the same knife, they should actually make different knives with different features. I want a different shaped blade with a flipper. But atleast there are 30 versions of the pyrite 🤯
You want me to ignore the locks' existence. However, you usually want people to accept that it exists. So, in conclusion, accept it exists, but you can ignore that it exists. This is getting way too deep for me, MC. 🤯
Your viewpoint has turned me on to "good knives", both big brand and those pesky (yet fabulous) Chinese knives. I have now bought a bunch of very good ( and fun) knives thanks to your introducing them to us all. I was 100% against Chinese knives last year...not so in 2024. Thanks ! Happy New Year Metal Complex !
I’m going to have to go with a hard pass on the secondary lock. Why would CJRB take a formula that worked and sold like hotcakes and then do something to mess that up? I am more likely to cut myself because of this secondary lock than without since nobody else does this. So now it doesn’t work like every other button lock that I’m used to using with my eyes closed. It sounds like something California would do like using this product may result in cuts, like heres a safety feature no one that uses the product uses. I like cjrb, but ill probably pass on any of these designs. I mean no disrespect, its their product, but change is not always better, not to mention that their more recent button locks are nothing like the older squishy ones that were a little concerning, they lock up tight! Smh
I wish knife makers would just drop the plunge/button lock. Only do it if it's a button operated liner lock or similar, IMO. Plunge locks are just weak, unfun IMO, and a PITA for left-handers. It's just the worst lock design in wide use, IMO. I bought one once. Never again.
I hate expensive handle materials. Beyond aesthetics and bragging rights they are 100% worthless to me. They provide zero benefits in any way shape form or fashion. Been begging Kizer for this. I don’t need fat carbon scales on my Towser k in Elmax. Just want the Elmax. Serape scales would interest me infinitely more. So you are right, MC.

Merry Christmas everyone. 🎄
I've always said that Artisan Cutlery/CJRB is my favorite maker! My favorite designer is Dylan Mallery though. Thanks for sharing & getting excited!

Maybe you missed it, but they're making it in G10 too not just FRN
The G10 versions are with AR-RPM9 though, there is no G10/S90V version so far.
Merry Christmas to you and all your family.

CJRB makes great knives!!!!! I have the Feldspar with the natural G10. I love it!!! It's an awesome knife!
I own a few varieties of the Feldspar, awesome blades. Will always be on my top five favorite knives list, year after year.

I've never had to mess with my pyrite pivots.
I'm still waiting for them to make a Pyrite Bowie XL. I absolutely love the Bowie, it deserves an XL variant.
Match the black with OD Green, and it's a winner for me.

I'd like to see CJRB to a top liner lock.
Would you rather have premium steel and budget handles or premium handles and budget steel?
The lock strength breakdown and the line about screaming/peeing/pooping into the sky had me cracking up. Thanks for keeping it entertaining.
Thanks
It's not just a secondary locking system. It's a secondary fidget system.
The secondary plunge is only an improvement imo. Their awesome for the money either way.
CJRB, if you are reading this

"Baton Mode" for that secondary lock is one of the best things you've ever come up with. Knife community, let's run with it.
I'm with you on that! I just finished the video, and I vividly remember him saying that IS the official name for it!! Soon as mine arrives, I'm putting in baton mode and walking into the woods! This is gonna be fun....

That S90V Pyrite Light looks like a winner to me!
Was hoping there was going to be a Hectare Alt in G-10 in one of the boxes. Cool video.
Dang I’m gonna have to hop back on the pyrite train with that S90v!
I was about to skip to the unboxing than you called me out So I didn't. TBT, the OG Pyrite is what revived my interest in budget knives.
I would love s90v pyrite with a aluminum handle with a crossbar lock

“This is not baton mode engaged.” 😂
Spyderco and Benchmade both...cheap nylon/grivory handles with good steels.
s90v in a budget knife is cool AF, though.
That secondary lock is a deal breaker for me
Aluminum and S90V, please!
My secondary lock always jams up . They need to work on it a little more. Maybe make it metal not plastic

Too bad about the secondary lock....still waiting for a premium pyrite XL with s90 v and titanium or carbon scales....
