I'm in the high school band ive been playing clarinet for 6 years and this is probably the best song we have ever played as a group, its challenging but fun at the same time.
When the imea honor band played this with mr. karrick we inserted a chorus line right after the first flute solo. "And before I be a slave I be buried in my grave And go home to my lord, and be free." Beautiful.
Such a beautiful piece. I love the way it tells the story, I can just imagine slaves who were on the run and eventually find freedom. We're playing this in band, so I hear it everyday, but I can't get over how amazing it is.
I played this at tri state as well, I'm glad I got to find a recording on here show I can show my friends this b.s piece. My school marched visuves my freshman year
Played this at UNCG music camp in 2010, it was a fantastic song. Some parts are easy to play, but to really PLAY? Dang it's hard. It's a wonderfully written piece, and one of my favourites to this day. :)
i really like this song, it's very well arranged i think, and stop arguing about middle school and high school bands, im in high school and we played this, and we just got back from our trip to disney world. honestly, playing in school band is about having fun and enjoying making music, not bragging about how hard the piece is. Jesus Christ., i know it's the internet, but there's no need to be assholes about everything, goddam
Did you all know that this song is related to the slavery era? it was composed to reflect on a slave running, then the slow part reflects their history and culture, then the ending is where they find their freedom. >3> as stated by my Symphonic Winds teacher. It's why he picked it out~ owo
well I'm last chair clarinet and we're just learning this song :V lol just kidding :3 but yes, this is probably my most favorite piece ever. I really love the slower part.
im not in high school band. my high schools band dun play this piece either. seeing that you're so confident, plz post a performance of your brother's middle school band playing this song. i look forward to it.
@MiguelJT218 I doubt very seriously that a middle school band is playing this. Karrick himself was the guest conductor for the Indiana Music Educators Association All State Honor Band and we played this piece. It is very difficult. I assure you, and if they are playing it, please, by all means post a video response of them doing so. I'd love to see a middle school's take on what some of Indiana's best high school musicians played not even a month ago.
Their is a concert arrangment and a High School Arrangment. Just like many other pieces. This seems to be the High School One. I'd be interested to see a Junior High play this version. Also hitting all the right notes which a junior school might be able to do, is not actually playing music. For most states, this is a class B High School Piece.
@MiguelJT218 it's not always about what's easy...it's usually about the instrumentation if an advanced band decides to play this. Gives a fuller sound and range in the instruments..which creates better balance throughout the entire band. plus advanced bands have more advanced players which they can play the music musically but also with feeling and emotion
This piece sounds remarkably similar to Vesuvius by Frank Ticheli. Basically the same rhythms in the first half, with many of the same parts (slow, fast, fiery bass soli, etc.) Is anybody else noticing that?
@890gg90 IKR!!! im in 8th grade so its kinda hard (plus the other horn player SUX) but i loooove playing it!! P.S. ur a horn player so...hav u ever heard of Arthur (Art) Adye?
@JuilliardOrBust Having spoken to the composer when he workshopped it, I don't think that was his intention- though I personally think this is the greater of the two, I doubt he set out to write a different version of a Ticheli piece. The sources he cited as inspiration were more amusing than they were derivative. That being said, it's pretty easy to accidentally or purposefully borrow, recompose or write variations on old themes. Look at John Williams.
Clearly you've never heard professional orchestra's play childrens music, and make it sound amazing. Music is music my friend, it doesn't need to be hard to be good. The less difficult it is, the more one can focus on the finer aspects, and make it sound incredible
@MiguelJT218 No song is exactly easy. There's always room for improvement. Always. Every truely good musician knows this. And this song is still amazing either way. Just appreciate it.
I played a rendition of this at my State level concert band competition, first chair F horn, we got a distinguished rating. but unfortunately got third place at state
there's nothing wrong with a simple song sounding magnificent. Think of something as simple as lux aeterna, a couple of intense intervals is all it takes to make it sound epic.
Why does everyone always feel the need to always include their chair in their comment? No one cares what chair you are or what instrument you play. Just enjoy the music. This piece in particular is quite beautiful.
you guys know that this could sound like 100x better if you played it musically.. the notes of this song are easy, but playing it musically is what makes it hard.. one thing that really bugs me about this is the trumpets missed the first two notes.. and i honestly can't tell the difference between forte and piano on this. and for you guys who say its so easy, try making MUSIC..because if your playing music and doing it right, its not as easy as you guys claim it to be.. just sayin
I'm in the high school band ive been playing clarinet for 6 years and this is probably the best song we have ever played as a group, its challenging but fun at the same time.
The slow section is probably one of the most beautiful and emotional melodies I have heard. What a great composition.

played this while he was directing my band at fsu during tri-state in 2010 had forgotten how fun it was to play... good times
i played this for all district this year as second chair clarinet and it was one of the most fun pieces i've experienced
I played this at tri state as well, I'm glad I got to find a recording on here show I can show my friends this b.s piece.

This is a great piece. I love when the F-horns have the melody with the trumpets!!!
Well that could be because i play F-horn
wow i LOVE this piece!
karrick was once a student of my current director, North, and we are so proud to be taking this song to competition. :))
played this my junior year 2010 spring 1st chair flute, this is one of my all time favorite pieces of music!
Anybody else recognize the similarity of this to Vesuvius by Frank Ticheli?
i still can't believe the depth of this song!
i also had the flute solos through out this piece, such a beautiful emotional piece!
SOOO EPIC! The flute solo is one of the most beautiful I have ever heard. This song makes me happy. Most easily flute part! :D
i really like this song, it's very well arranged i think, and stop arguing about middle school and high school bands, im in high school and we played this, and we just got back from our trip to disney world. honestly, playing in school band is about having fun and enjoying making music, not bragging about how hard the piece is. i love playing this its soo cool.
& i love black people.

This Is one of my favorite pieces for bassoon. My favorite is the sorcerers apprentice
This is awesome to play on bassoon! I played it at i think bistate? and it was so fun!
@@ChaosNova523 nice! I last picked up my basson 6 years ago but I still distinctly remember this concert. Thats awesome you played this at bistate!
a song is what you make it.
I think this is well done.
Nothing is "easy" for a REAL player, just something they can try to make perfect faster
this was so so fun to play with school :D
Percussion ftw!

1st chair clarinet. favorite piece I've EVER played
no way! :D we're playing this at a contest too. The after-school rehearsals are a pain, but it's worth it xD
i played this at band camp... awwww yeaaaa (aycock senior band at uncg 2010)
Best counter melody ever in the horns 3:21
well I'm last chair clarinet and we're just learning this song :V

13 years later and he has not uploaded that performance 😒
My band is replacing the oboe solo with a flugle horn and I might be getting it! Eep (:
3:46-about 3:50 is so emotional!! my fav part 2 play (f horn...:3)

@MiguelJT218 The whole point of music is to entertain and it sounds bloody good
@MiguelJT218

It sucks how it cuts out on the last chord :(
This piece kind of sounds like something you'd hear from a Final Fantasy game.
So amazing though!

Hey does anyone hear a hint of Vesuvius in this piece?
@JuilliardOrBust Having spoken to the composer when he workshopped it, I don't think that was his intention- though I personally think this is the greater of the two, I doubt he set out to write a different version of a Ticheli piece. at 4:12 I believe there is suppose to be a triangle with the flute after he breaths

Great performance !
.....but does anyone get a video on it, or just audio? (It helps me practice with the piece if I can watch the conductor.)
Baby Vesuvius
I played a rendition of this at my State level concert band competition, first chair F horn, we got a distinguished rating. but unfortunately got third place at state
@invidious77 the horn part in this is fun to play
We kicked this songs ass !!!!
one of my director's former students wrote this =)
I am first chair F-horn and we are playing this at contest!!
can someone say....Frank Ticheli??? *cough* Vesuvius
@MiguelJT218 is it so easy if you play it with heart..and play it musically?
does this sound alot like vesuvius or is it just me
LETS GO HORNS im a 2nd horn!!!
there's nothing wrong with a simple song sounding magnificent. Think of something as simple as lux aeterna, a couple of intense intervals is all it takes to make it sound epic.
Vesuvius Lite
@Faerie13Flute flute lol
@musiCrazy21 thank you!!
@TrAnMu YES
Its all about 1:15 to 2:17
@pa5436 Yeah, just because they're playing the song doesn't mean it won't be dirty... yeah. A song is nothing if it's not clean.
Same with Incantation and Dance.
Anywhere I can download the MP3 or MP4 file for this?
use a website like convertinmp4.com and paste the youtube link in the box then it will let you download the video. works for almost all youtube videos
@alaman321 thats the same thing i posted on a vesuvius vid hahaha
@jsutchillin
I resent that!
@MiguelJT218 Ha middle schoolers can't handle 7/8
does it really matter?
Why does everyone always feel the need to always include their chair in their comment? No one cares what chair you are or what instrument you play. Just enjoy the music. This piece in particular is quite beautiful.
@juanvaldez100 which means almost nothing...
you guys know that this could sound like 100x better if you played it musically.. the notes of this song are easy, but playing it musically is what makes it hard.. one thing that really bugs me about this is the trumpets missed the first two notes.. and i honestly can't tell the difference between forte and piano on this. and for you guys who say its so easy, try making MUSIC..because if your playing music and doing it right, its not as easy as you guys claim it to be.. just sayin
