- AT FMQs today Douglas Ross blasted the Scottish government's recent budget, asking 'Does Humza Yousaf think it's fair that a majority of Scots will pay more tax than people South of the border who earn the same wage'
Mr Ross called the First Minister 'High tax Humza' and said: ' He (Humza Yousaf) is making hard working Scots pick up the bill for his mistakes.'

England is in deficit.
The UK is in recession with this Westminster Tory government.
The national debt when the Westminster Tories came to power in 2010 was about £1 trillion, in 2024 its £2.6 trillion.
The Westminster Tories borrowed another £135 billion in 2023 to spend on their pet projects.
The interest on this debt was £97 billion in 2023.
The disastrous Tory Liz Truss budget is to reportedly have cost the country £34 billion and instigated 15 increases in mortgage rates.
The Scottish government has to balance its budget every year.
The Scottish government wasn't allowed to borrow money until recently but even now they are very restricted by Westminster.
The Scottish government recently had a budget and there isn't a black hole in their budget.
But like English councils 8 of which have gone bankrupt since 2018, 6 of this number have gone bankrupt since 2021 such as Nottingham city, Birmingham council and Woking etc.
The institute for Government said in a report that since 2010 the Westminster Tories cut the money going to English councils by 40% and English councils have had to put up council tax by 30% to compensate for the Westminster cuts and also cut public services.
The English councils said that because of inflation higher costs and higher wages not being met by the Westminster Tories English councils will be putting council tax up and cutting services.
In February Birmingham council announced that they are putting up the council tax by 21% over the next two years and cutting public services by £300 million over the next two years.
The Welsh Labour First Minister said that the Westminster Tories cut their budget in 2023 by £1.3 billion.
He also said because of inflation, higher costs and higher wages not being met by Westminster the Welsh budget was cut in real terms in 2024.
The Scottish government said that because of inflation, higher costs and higher wages not being met by Westminster it's budget over the past two years was cut by £520 million and in 2024 it's capital budget was cut by 10% ( £1.6 billion) over the next few years by the Westminster Tories.

We seem to be fixated on Public Sector salaries and seem to forget public sector workers enjoy an overall package that is substantially more than private sector workers. I believe, according to ONS data, that a public sector worker pension pot is around 5 times more than their private sector equivalent. With 1 in 5 people now employed in the Scottish Public sector, this all has to be paid for. I’m witnessing people retiring from the public sector whose annual salary is 1/4 of my own earnings and their pension pot is 3-4 times more than mine (at the same age and the same number of working years)…how is that fair 🤷🏻♂️

The fact that so many Scots pay little to no income tax is a damning indictment of the country's economic policy and the quality of the jobs available in Scotland.
Actually it IS the FACT that EVERY SCOT receives £2,000 after Tax FREE from Wales, Northern Ireland and England. That is a Baby to an OAP. Strange. HMRC publish the total taxes of all types it collects disaggregated to each region and country. For Scotland, that latest figure is around £70 billion p.a. The UK government also publishes the country grants under the Barnett Formula. The latest figure was a bit less than £50 billion. And Northern Ireland, that so-called great bottomless bucket of expenditure of "Westminster" money, passes £12 billion p.a and receives back similar. Those being disingenuous report per capita public expenditure way above that of England. This is true but only because there are more publicly owned enterprises in both Scotland and Northern Ireland such as transport, water etc where expenditure is categorised as public spending with nothing distributed as dividends from both profit and, as in England, from tens of £billions of borrowings. As a Northern Irelander I can say that we still have council rates inclusive of water rates which is more than 20% less than England's Councill Tax for comparable properties, AND water and sewage rates in England are then additionally paid over to profit motivated private companies. Employees in Scotland are also doing comparably better than most of England with only the South, Southeast and London equal or higher. Again, HMRC publish these data annually.

Two problems:
#1 - Saying you are less crap than someone else is not evidence of competence.
#2 - We can't afford these public services because there isn't enough tax revenues from high paying jobs and industries. Tax take should be increased by growing the economy, not squeezing an underperforming one.

To be fair, England (government/treasury) decides how much pocket money Scotland gets to run the country. And this pocket money is less than the amount of taxes & duties raised in Scotland that is sent directly to the treasury each year. If your next door neighbour took your salary, gave you an ever decreasing amount of it back to run your own house and spent the remainder on their own house, you may well struggle to make ends meet, and be a bit miffed about too.
The Barnett Formula provides a generous amount of money for Scotland - the problem is, the SNP use these allocated funds for their own home-grown ideologies and
therefore the receipts are not spent in the areas of intention. This is why we have a huge budget deficit requiring massive cuts to services, capital expenditure and now
increases in the tax we all pay in Scotland... We then have billions wasted on failures by the Scottish Greens, Embassies abroad, ferries not built on time or budget and
then blatant defraud and theft, endemic within SNP and their affiliations. Now if you're neighbour knew all that, they might wish more than answers, or Police investigations,

The reason that I'm asking is that Humza claims that the majority of Scots pay less tax than rest of the UK. Also Westminster has put record funding in to the NHS. Unlike the SNP have consitently diverted funds from their NHS to their independence plans. Which started when Nicola Sturgeon was the Health Secretary.
