    This guy is probably the most musical Telecaster player I've ever heard. Total nuance....total control.

    Used to open for Jim whenever I sat in with Eric McFadden for his happy hour gig every Thursday at The Paradise Lounge in S.F. He basically does to Country Swing what Hendrix did to blues tiny room and plenty loud... When he's trading eights with his pedal steel player, it's like you walked into a cartoon. One of a kind.

      I worked the door at the Paradise for a couple of years and used to see Jim several times a week with the Ten Gallon Cats, Mental Revenge, or Gary Claxton band. Probably one of the greatest pickers most people don't know..

    This guy plays 9 gauge strings and it sounds amazing. We always sacrifice musicality and playability for the tone and that stupid idea of sustain. As if you need 3 minutes of sustain to play blues. We are all marketing victims.

    I appreciate his mastery and command of the tele. But his playing is choppy and unappealing to me. This is consistent across the several videos I've watched. it's a matter of taste.
    It's like my friend Jimmy from Arizona once said of my hero Neil Young, "Other than his writing, playing and singing, Neil Young is a hellava guy." I kinda feel that way about Mr. Campilongo. He likes to show his ability to command the Telecaster. But his playing is like sour candy to me. Again, it's a matter of taste.

    • @chokkan7
      @chokkan7 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thomas McCoy Each to their own taste. Some tastes are acquired, and Jim's style would probably have to be counted among those...he mixes influences from Jimmy Bryant and Chet Atkins to avant-garde jazz, and it comes out as recognizably JC. The fact that his takes on timing, meter, and harmony are all as fluid as they are may be jarring to some, but to others, they are a much needed dash of spice to an increasingly bland menu. Don't force it, but I'd advise further sampling until something 'clicks'...you may find it rewarding.

    • @rionn9
      @rionn9 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Thomas McCoy this is like saying you hate metal cause it has bad tones unlike your favorite jazz genre.. 😅

    It seems like an endless combination of disjointed, rudimentary tricks with no respect for tuning or melodic concepts. I would-be curious to hear him play a song "anyone" knows just to hear his interpretation and harmonic treatment.

      Why does playing a song that everyone knows mean a damn thing? he's different and created his own style. Show me where it is written that a man can not do just that.

    • @john4019

      > "I would-be curious to hear him play a song "anyone" knows just to hear his interpretation and harmonic treatment."
      Well, then go and listen to one. He did cover a few tunes.
      By the way, to say he lacks melodic concept is one of the most unqualified comments to make about Campilongo.
