Lake Tanganyika, Natural habitat of Tropheus duboisi

In this video I would like to show you the habitat of Tropheus duboisi, probably one of the most popular cichlids among Lake Tanganyika cichlid enthusiasts. See how this cichlid lives in its intermediate habitat and how the juveniles in particular forage among the upper wave-washed rocky habitat. Find beautiful examples for an aquarium setup and see which fellow residents T.duboisi mainly lives with. Or just enjoy the underwater world of the lake. I would like to see some aquarium setups from the challenges I mentioned!
Sorry guys I made a misidentification and I would like to add that fish with the offspring at 9.15 it is not L. attenuatus, but Perissodus microlepis. The fish at 10.33 is not L. profundicola, but L. lemairii
and at the end 20:55 is not a T.duboisi but a T. moorii sp kiriza from D.R. Congo that escaped from the fisherman during offloading.

Fantastic shooting and diving.
The Cyatopharynx furcifer and Synodontis are also truly spectacular. There are many species of cichlids in the reefs and habitats of Kigoma in addition to the popular Tropheus duboisi.

Hi guys, this morning I received a comment on my video( Tropheus duboisi) from Carsten Thorleif Stabel, well-known among Tanganyika cichlid enthusiasts. He pointed out to me that at the end of the video 20:55 it is not T. duboisi but T. moorii kiriza. So a wrong ID on my part. This fish is found in D.R. Congo. So I was right about the fact that these fish had probably escaped from the fishermen. Thanks Thorleifdk for your attention, how provide me the picture as well for the rectification. And sorry for my mistake.

Beautiful video, thanks for posting it. I would like to add that fish with the offspring at 9.15 it is not L. attenuatus, but Perissodus microlepis. The fish at 10.33 is not L. profundicola, but L. lemairii. I found a similar Tropheus 'duboisi' with yellow band up the dorsal fin south of Hilltop, and from opinions I got from others that one was a Tropheus 'black', possibly Kiriza. So probably something - as you also stated in the video - escaped from fish collectors. Looking forward to the Cyathopharynx video. p.s. although easily missed, nice seeing the N. savoryi in the wild as well.

Yes, you are right, sorry for my misidentification. I'll be a little more careful next time. I'm not very familiar with the cichlids of Lake Tanganyika, more with the riverine cichlids. I have made many dives in the Lake, and therefore collected also a lot of material that I want to share with enthusiasts.

Thanks, but sorry I made a mistake with the id from that specific species. I got this morning info from a wel known Tanganyika specialist that this Tropheus moorii Kiriza from Congo. So he may be escaped from the fishermen. Best greetings.

I don't think it was Dubois, the one with the yellow belt, without the blue-gray head, it looks more like a Kiryza-mboko (?)

Yep you’re right I corrected it already on my Facebook account. It’s a Tropheus moorii kiriza , but as I already mentioned escape from the fisherman during offloading. Thanks anyway for mentioning my mistake.

@@cichlidsinthewild the worst thing is that the natural environment of Lake Tanganyika is not only overfished by fishermen, sometimes turning it into a "sad desert" in some places, but the irresponsible release of species from other parts of the lake into new places is the beginning of unnatural hybridization, which is so condemned when takes place in aquariums throughout the Tanganyika community..

I know little about these fish. It appears Cichlids dominate in numbers and diversity.
I find it hard to understand how so many algae eaters exist, but what do fish eat in 30+ metres when the sunlight cuts out?
Are there Cichlids in truly deep water there?
Are some species even cannibalistic?
But what other types of fish are there?
This is the first Lake Tanganyika video I've watched.
So many questions......

Hi Geoff, the evolution in the lake is remarkable. In the dept you find piscivore, fish eters. Furthermore species how feed on plankton how is pressed up from the dept. Sand shifters how filter food particles out of the sand and even a few species how are evolved in scale eaters and feed therefore only on scales of other fish. If you are interested in Lake Tanganyika cichlids I advise you to buy a book from Ad Konings where you can find interesting information. Best greetings
