    Damn. Flo Marching does not do you guys justice. I got to see the show live in Murfreesboro (7/29) and the soundscape was immaculate. Easily my favorite show of the year. The way everything was mixed, from the voice-over, to the keytar, to the hornline and pit, it blended so incredibly well. It truly was my favorite show to see live, and I got to see the top 8. Huge props to you and the rest of the audio people who work basically behind the scenes!

    Incredible! back in my day we had a couple of speakers, probably a cheap QSC amp, a Mackie12 channel mixer and maybe a synth and an upright bass mic hooked up to it. Technology is amazing these days! I went on to work for a couple Pro Audio companies so I've seen some of the evolution from then to now. I love that it is allowed in DCI and incorporated. I think we had an electric guitar one field show season in the 90's and they almost didn't allow it.

      Luckily, as the activity progresses, more and more corps are starting to post job listings as needed for audio engineers/interns. So keep your eyes peeled for those! I just asked a lot of questions and poked around for opportunities. This was actually my first foray into live audio, but I have a degree in electrical engineering with a minor in music, and my academic/research focus in graduate school is on audio signal processing.

    I couldn't help but notice the only cords were to the speakers and the soundboard cart. are all key boards individually wireless mics? and how often do you have one go haywire? if that does happen how do you get it back online?

    • @JosephKimAudio
      @JosephKimAudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good questions! Long story short, those two cable snakes coming from the RF cart contain everything we need to communicate with the front ensemble/speakers. 25-pin DTR connectors send signals to the speakers, and CAT5 cables transmit/receive everything through digital audio (REAC). All of the keyboards are connected through analog CAT5 snakes to the synth carts which send REAC signals to us. The left side also supplies power, and we have a couple more short CAT5 and power cables to connect the RF and mixer carts. The keyboards are definitely NOT wireless.

  • @dumpicus_maximus

    Damn.....
    I help make sure my HS audio setup works, but our setup is plebeian compared to y'alls. We've got 5 marimbas and 4 vibes, all with mics. The marimbas get 2 AT2035s, and the Vibes only get 1. We've got only 4 QLXD wireless channels running into a set of Shure Fins, and 4 AT2035 stage mics for the winds. 3 Rode NTG 2s for features, and 5 Synths- a DTX12, MODX8, Motif XF6 and Motif XS7 (iirc). Then an old Malletkat (we tried the Pearl EM1 Malletstation last year, but the wind kept triggering it and creating phantom presses) running into a Mac mini running mainstage. The synths run into a Tio1608d, which sends the signals to the TF5 running the show over Dante- with the exception of the Mac Mini, which sends audio via Dante VSC.
    Then our drumset has 7 mics (2 overheads, kick drum mic, snare mic, 3 mics on the toms) running into an old 01V96 V2. Then we've only got 2 speaker carts- each with a huge Yamaha subwoofer, and a large Yamaha speaker.
    If I've mixed on Yamaha TF and CL gear, worked with Dante setups (am L1 certified but planning to go to L3 when I have free time) and ran audio for a marching band, what other skills should i pick up to get a chance to work audio for a DCI corp?

    • @JosephKimAudio
      @JosephKimAudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sounds like a great setup! And it seems you have a lot of skills already. It's always great to have experience as a drum corps member as well if you haven't done that already - living and working on the road on the DCI tour is an entire skillset unto itself and having that knowledge is extremely important. You could have all the skills and experience in the world when it comes to audio but if you don't know how to take care of yourself through the physical and mental rigor of the road you're not gonna be much help.

    • @dumpicus_maximus
      @dumpicus_maximus 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JosephKimAudio Also- a little sidenote. Why do y'all use the Roland M5000C? I get that it has a ton of channels and is really configurable, but wouldn't the CL or Rivage line offer more flexibility and modularity, more capability, and just have a wider install base and thus greater familiarity? Or a console from DigiCo or Solid State Logic.
      All of them seem to be largely superior to the Roland, but since I cannot find much info on the M5000C I'm a little curious why y'all use it (it's literally not even listed on Roland's website either).

    • @JosephKimAudio
      @JosephKimAudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Fantastic question! Most every competition venue has a designated area for a corps' sound engineer up in the box near the judges. With the Bluecoats, we would have a member of the staff up in that area with a microphone that allows them to talk to us directly through our in-ear monitors. That way, while we were mixing the show, we could get real time feedback from a set of ears in the box for any adjustments we needed to make.
