The Real History of Thanksgiving Squanto was of the Patuxent Nation in what is called Plymouth, Massachusetts in modern times. In 1614, he was kidnapped by English explorer Thomas Hunt, who took him to Spain where he was sold into slavery. Squanto escaped, eventually returning to North America in 1619. Squanto learned to speak perfect English during his slavery. Squanto returned to his village to find many had died of European diseases for which they had no immunity. He had to join the Wampanoag Nation. At the same time in Europe, British Protestant Puritan Pilgrims were so radical, they were too much for the Protestant Church of England, and lived in exile in the Netherlands. The Puritan Pilgrims did not land at Plymouth, they landed in what is called Cape Cod in modern times, on November 11, 1620. They were sick and starving, only half the passengers being Puritan Pilgrims. The rest were described as itinerants and fortune seekers. Cape Cod was an ancient Patuxent burial ground area. The Pilgrims raided whatever they could find, as the remaining Patuxent watched from a distance. The original destination had been the Hudson River in New York. After one month of eating game and fish, they had enough strength to explore and 'found' Plymouth. The ships were sent around and that was the 'first' landing. The winter was brutal and nearly half the Pilgrims died. In the spring, the Puritan Pilgrim Colonists started preparing to farm, using the European method of mono-crop row farming, which had been developed for thousands of years -- in Europe. The Wampanoag and Squanto kept watching from a distance. Squanto knew their crops were going to fail. Despite having been kidnapped and made a slave by the English, he still had compassion for them. The chief of the Wampanoag wanted to meet the new strangers and Squanto made contact with the Puritan Pilgrims in 1621, as they were realizing their crops were failing and a brutal winter was ahead. Squanto introduced the strange Europeans to corn, squash, potato, and other crops that provided fiber and protein. He showed them how to use fish as a fertilizer rather than human and cow manure. With Squanto's help, the Puritan Pilgrims were able to have a fall harvest in 1621 and decided to hold a feasting celebration. They had crops but they didn't have venison and game meat. They only knew how to hunt with a musket, and the loud boom drove the game away after the first kill. They knew the Indians (Columbus name for the natives), using bow and arrow had plenty of venison and game meat, so they were invited to the feasting celebration. That was the first Thanksgiving in November 1621. There was no 2nd Thanksgiving although the Puritan Pilgrims did have a feasting celebration, not needing to invite the Heathen Savage Indians anymore. Also, the Puritan Pilgrims had started spreading inland, with more and more Puritans coming from exile in the Netherlands. They needed houses so they started chopping down trees. They started land-grabbing, not knowing it was Wampanoag territorial lands. In those times, the ethnocentric White European-Caucasian did not recognize the 'darks' as being humans. In those times, the Puritan Pilgrims saw the Indians as primitive heathens, a subhuman. In 1622, they just started slaughtering the Wampanoag that was on the land they wanted. The slaughtering was of whole villages, every man, woman, child and dog. The native dog of America was driven into extinction by this wholesale slaughtering. By 1622, the Puritan Pilgrims were celebrating after the slaughter of every village. The 3rd Thanksgiving, the head of a Wampanoag chief Samoset was on a pike in the town square, and the Puritan Pilgrim children were kicking around the heads of decapitated Wampanoag men as footballs, during the feasting (the start of football during after the Thanksgiving feasting). After that, there were many, many Thanksgivings, several times a year. Thanksgiving became a celebration for wiping out another Wampanoag village, every man, woman, child, and dog, to take that land away from them. If the Puritan Pilgrim wanted some land that was occupied, they just killed the occupants and took the land. This continued until the time of George Washingtion, who decided there were too many of these celebrations, and he declared just one day of Thanksgiving per year. Abraham Lincoln formalized the date to be the third Thursday in November.
