    My family are immigrants to the US from Iraq, but before my mom and aunt and grandparents came to the states, they were refugees in Greece for a couple years. My nana told me that the kindness and hospitality is unmatched, and she's never seen anything like it. She got in an accident and had to go to the hospital, but she couldn't drive, and she had two infant children with her, and she said people came together to help her get to the hospital and a Greek friend she made took care of her kids while she recovered, that they made sure her kids ate, were bathed, warm, everything. It was amazing to her.
    I'm going in just a few weeks, now. I'm so excited to see where my family lived, and I want to try and meet the people that helped my nana. I've already felt a love for Greece because of how they helped my family while they fled, but I can't wait to see the beauty of it for myself.

    1:53 "I think we should know our history before we can be proud of our history and our country"
    That hit very hard and I think it's wonderful to hear these words spoken by a young person. Considering how in today's society people are so quick to praise their own culture, play victims, blame others, express opinions that are either xenophobic or racist, all without hardly ever picking up a history book in their lifetime.
    So refreshing to hear someone say in the most respectful way possible: "educate yourself first".

    Living in the UK with an OK job, yes I have money to pay my bills and a little bit left to save (that is if I don't go out for coffee, drinks or food much) but I can't say that I have an enjoyable life. In Greece, things may be difficult for many but every time I am there, I never have the impression that people are miserable or unhappy (and I am not talking about tourist spots). It is possible to have fun and enjoy life in Greece, something that is very difficult up north for many reasons.

    • @t0rn
      @t0rn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I totally agree about life in the UK. I feel the system makes you watch the clock and be ‘on time’ all the time. You finish work and have only an hour or maybe less to get to the shops and have coffee. This is too much stress. There’s a balance between employment rights of service workers and freedom of life that you get in Greece.

    As a Greek, I won't say that I am proud to be Greek. I'll say that I am grateful to be a Greek. A Greek should feel proud, ONLY IF he lived and worked to maintain the culture, the knowledge, the tradition and customs, music, art, politics and the ethics that represent the Greek civilization. Indeed many of us are corrupted. There's a constant fight between the corrupted and the pure souls. And yes we are undisciplined on a small portion. But we are not lazy. Most of the people, here, work their asses off to maintain the necessary.

    • @alexverdigris9939
      @alexverdigris9939 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I've lived in Greece 6 years as a teenager. Some of my observations:
      - I agree, the Greeks are not lazy, that's a false stereotype. Speaking of any nation as being lazy is itself a bit of a lazy thing to do. Laziness relates to energy levels, which relates to personal health, so it's a trait of the individual, a trait that should never be applied to any large group.
      - With regard to pride: The Greeks are indeed very proud culture, in the chauvinistic sense. I believe this comes from their historic struggle for independence. It's been a form of resistance against assimilation by the Ottomans - a resolute belief that the Greek identity is worthy of preservation at all cost. So this pride has a noble historic origin in the nation's history of resistance, nonetheless it is out of place today. It is never a flattering look to have a superiority complex, and it is out of place in the modern era.
      - Regarding hospitality: in-keeping with other Balkan cultures, the Greeks are very hospitable with guests and visitors, however they do switch to being intolerant, and their philoxenia can turn into xenophobia in the event that one is trying to actually stay and join Greek society. Acceptance of outsiders is of lower levels, and here Greece resides amongst a more intolerant and discriminatory league of nations. Again, there are deterministic historic causes for this.
      *These are my observations based on my experience of living in Greece in the decade of 2000s, and are not to be seen in the context of present day socio-political trends, neither in Greece nor in the international context of socio-politics today*

    • @Alexander-jm1oi
      @Alexander-jm1oi 23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@alexverdigris9939 Yeah these are some valid observations that I also confirm they are legitimate. The Greeks are balancing between a traditional South European country with deep roots in Europe and modern way of life but carrying some caprices and bad habits. Greece has changed by far since the 2000s. Whole different world. The things are modernized and on some sectors we are very ahead of our time comparing to some other countries but the younger generation seems to be the biggest issue these days. The youngers are cooked. Turning to zombies from the social media while the young parents are discouraged to even have a second baby. As a Greek, Im not trying to be pessimistic but I see my country a graveyard the next 30 years. Capitalism and globalization is hurting us.

I remember a couple years back my parents were watching the EuroBasket semi-final on TV between North Macedonia and Spain when my sister walked in and asked "who's losing? oh the macedonians nvm" and my dad scoffed, looked at her and said
    "MACEDONIANS? WHAT MACEDONIANS!? I DONT SEE ANY GREEKS IN THAT TEAM! I SEE ONLY BULGARIANS FROM SKOPJE!"

    It’s very sad that English people are considered ‘ill-tempered’ or ‘quiet’. This is a common misconception which you can only see if you know both cultures (family on both sides, I mean). The English seem that way because it’s how we perceive we need to act around strangers (politeness) once you know us you’ll find us loud, warm and loving. My Greek family, love how warm my English family are. People everywhere have default stereotypes about other countries and they are largely perpetuated in our societies by people who’ve probably never experienced it for themselves. I blame the media a lot.

      They asked this question in Athens, that's why. These people haven't really worked in the tourism industry and don't know British people. I'm from an island and worked in the tourist industry for years, and British people are the ones who make the most noise and are generally the "bad" kind of tourists here because they drink too much and party like animals. For me this isn't bad, I like lively people, however there are many extremes to this like violence and other bad acts. I also enjoy talking to them the most, probably because they can hold a conversation in English unlike other people from countries like France and Germany.

      @@MementoMoriGrizzly sadly our tourists are generally awful. The island holidays are disrespectfully marketed and I feel sorry for the islanders. It’s the same with any society. We have our good and bad people. The cheap holidays tend to attract the bad.

      @@MementoMoriGrizzly The person who answered that wasn't from Athens, but from somewhere in Macedonia. To be fair, I don't think we can judge people as a whole solely from how they behave when they are drunk. Indeed I have noticed that societies where people keep their distances from one another and have large social bubbles tend to overindulge in alcohol in a way societies like that of Greece generally don't, but I think that the quietness and loudness, depending on the blood alcohol level, of people such as Brits and Danes are both sides of the same coin.

      A fact about Greece is that in politics we are very very inhibited "philosophers". Greece from 1830-2022 got mixed with politics so bad. We have many political events that changed Greece so much. Many civil wars and animosity dominated Greece. Greeks are extremists with football teams and political parties. For example there is a bunch of communists and leftists in every city and there are many rightists and nationalists. Extremism really took over Greece more than any other country today.

      You found the only non-Greek on this video to listen to. Wrong. He says “we are Balkans” while many other Balkaners believe it, when they actually come to Greece, they realize how different here the atmosphere is. The only correct term to describe Greece, Greeks, and the atmosphere here is, we're simply Southern Mediterranean Europeans, only. That's it. Take it however you want, whatever that means. If you actually walk in a Greek, Italian, and a Spanish city, you will essentially find not as many differences. Many more you will find in case you move from Greece to North, in Balkans.

    Stereotypes are a cosy way to reprimand someone when you have nothing tangible against the person. Every language have a panoply of derogative terms ready to serve stereotypes, but, well, those who judge others (unfavorably compared to one's self) are anxious for themselves. By the way, those proud for their nation are ignorant about history and content themselves with political fictions. Open-minded students of history are more reserved, as usually, praised leaders are proved (not so) little monsters and supposedly heroic nations follow suit - but, obviously, only the former get the lion's share of the profit letting bloodshed for the latter.
