Louie Shelton played the original solo. He was working with the "Wrecking Crew" in the 60s. He lives in Queensland Australia and is still busy performing, recording and producing. He turns 74 today. Happy Birthday William Louis Shelton! Great lesson btw Mark, I enjoyed it very much!
Charles Hoernemann Wow, happy B-day to Louie Shelton from me too! I didn't know any of that, and I'm really glad he's still "in the saddle." Thanks for listening and for the awesome comment!
If you're still out there...the original YES guitar player, Peter Banks, has been purported as playing the guitar solo. If you listen to the first two Yes albums it certainly SOUNDS like Peter Banks, who had that "Wes Montgomery" style of playing (no slight to Louie). Wikipedia says some chap named Darrell Jones (not the Miles Davis/Stones bassist Daryl) plays guitars on the track. I'm confused! I know Louie even has TH-cam videos of him doing the solo, but to my ears, it still sounds like Peter. I wish I had the original album, as it might actually list who is really playing this sublime solo!
Hi Mark, thank you so much for your detailed explanation of this beautiful guitar solo. You see, I tried to get the notes by myself, but the octaves parts of the solo were always difficult for me as a beginner. Even though it doesn't have a tab incorporated on the video, your step-by-step explanation has been all I needed to play the whole solo at last. Now I'll make a rehearsal with my band mates in order to play it for a wedding feast soon on December, 'cause this song fits perfectly for the occasion. I'm really grateful for taking the time to make this video for all those who, like me, wants to play this beautiful guitar solo. Greetings from Santiago, Chile.
I'm so glad I could help. I wish you luck in December and hope it nicely adds to the beauty of the wedding. Nice to hear from a friend in Santiago, Chile also. It's amazing how small the world is nowadays. Greetings from Ithaca, NY USA!
Hey Mark. I just finished learning this solo from "Hello". I got everything but the octave parts is a little tricky. My fretting hand is asking me..."What the hey is this"? "This is new". I got it tho, just not quite as smooth as you. You are right about this song bringing back memories. Such a memorable solo. In '85 I was 16 and got my first Kramer electric. Couldn't play tho.lol. Thanks for the great lesson. Aloha from Hawaii.
Hi! Glad it brought back some memories for you. I was 19 that year and probably played it on my 335 (which I still have!). It was a huge step up from my Ibanez LP copy (not the good ones) that was my first electric. Stick with the octaves. They're really nice to use, especially in R&B. Thanks for stopping by!
Mr. Mark, Thank you very much for showing us how play this solo, the jazzy and the twin sound (the octave) made it sound difficult to play, BUT......,after your cool and patent way of showing us how it can be played, is really great...Keep it pouring. thanks, Llewellyn......INDIA
Wow ! Thank you very much for writing back, not many do this, Very Kind Of You !.. Could you please make one of Stevie Wonder's Sir Duke.., yes the second part where most of the instruments play that part.......Got the Hello solo going, wife's very happy about it ha ha ha,,,thanks again.
+Llewellyn Anthony Carr Got to keep the wife happy! :) I love the song Sir Duke (whole album actually ... Saturn being my favorite ... dig the message especially), but I need a clarification. Are you looking for the unison runs with the bass and the horns? There's not much of a guitar part there. Are you maybe looking for a "how would I play it if I were in a band" sort of thing? Sorry for being so dense.
Thank you very much Mr. Mark for writing. Yes its the Bass and horn runs. as we have no horn section (especially here in India) in our band, we are trying to work this out on Guitars and keyboard..just to let you know we are a Standard Five-piece Band and play Country, Pop. Rock, Reggae and a pinch of Jazz and Blues
I absolutely love this lesson! I remember being in high school thinking this would be an easy solo to learn. Boy, was I wrong. I only knew 1st position chords back then. Never was able to take into account the octaves technique. Thanks so much, Mark!
Mark..... just a quick thankyou note for your video on "Hello". Ive been trying to work this piece out for a week or so and your instructional video sure took alot of pain away..... great job...... thankyou very much Frank
Mark - thank you so much for putting this together!! Sadly when you were woooing girls in high school with this, I was trying so hard to learn this right after graduating college. Now, 30 years later, I'm trying the guitar again - wish I had never quit!! To be trying this solo is a dream come true!! Just one question: Around 4:41 when you say, "walk up on the 3rd with a 4, 5 and 6" - it looks in the video like you are hitting 4, 5 and 7 (with your pinky). I'm just trying to play it as well as you do!! Thanks for helping me play something I never thought I could!!
Excellent tutorial , suits me as an intermediate , I broke it down into 4 parts as you did ,kept going till it clicked in not easy but a great stretcher of techniques. Had a look at your other lessons love the Funky R&B grove. Top job keep um coming many many Thanks, Bagzy
Mark Zabel Hey Mark, thanks for the reply , a request wow that a tuff one don’t want to waist this chance , so many great songs spring to mind. One which iv never been able to find is the solo from Odissey - Going back to my Roots !Go on Mark make my day ( year, life Ha Ha ) please. Thanks , Bagzy
It's a deal. There's some funky stuff going on there! There's a weird effect going on there on the guitar. Should be pretty straightforward though. Great suggestion!!
Thankyou so much for this ,great help for someone like me who is beginning to explore the fretboard ....! such a cool sound from one of my favourite songs ,if I can add this to the rest of the song I will be very happy .
Thank you that's cool that's a pretty packed lesson effectively you taught us the song in the first three minutes cool. I miss my 30-year also but I kind of figured all the people I'm really close with I'm already in touch with on a regular basis anyway. Have a great day thank you
mark, great lesson. I've the opportunity to view a couple of your lessons which I enjoyed immensely. How about posting a lesson from Billy Stewart " I Do Love You ". I'll check back. Thanks, Dee
Thank you! I appreciate your listening and commenting. I really like your suggestion - that whole sort of sound and style is my favorite. I actually got to play with Joe Messina (king of the backbeat in all of the early Motown recordings) and played guitar for one of the (ex) Del Vikings members in one of his regular bands during the '80s. I don't think we played any Billy Stewart, but it's great stuff. I'm happy to put it on the list. Thanks!!
One of the sweetest guitar solos that I have ever heard. Thanks Louie Shelton. And thank you Mark for showing and sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it and totally agree with your assessment of the solo. A very powerful solo.
Great Tutorial..thank you Mark
Sure thing! Thanks for watching!

What kind of guitar is that? I might buy an electric guitar and I really like everything about this guitar. Great tutorial by the way!
It's a Reverend Pete Anderson PA-1. Great guitar. A bit on the expensive side, though not compared to Gretsch.
@@MarkZabel thank you!!
mark thank you for you excellent video. But is it in A-mino or E-mino? I did not get that .
Thanks. It's A minor.
ANY TAB PLS?? FOR THE SOLO LEAD?
