    • @DS-uh6ss
      @DS-uh6ss 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      There was great music and great movies, but it wasn't at all gentler. Just different. We were doing duck-and-cover drills in elementary school because nuclear war was imminent, and everyone was terrified of being kidnapped and murdered by serial killers or like Adam Walsh. A lot of us were latchkey kids around this time, and had to pick up slack with making dinner and doing laundry. Kids being left alone more also meant we were also dealing with things like abuse/molestation, depression, and fears, but without the language or awareness to talk about it. All of the same anxiety points were there, we just didn't have the internet and multiple 24/7 news networks screaming it at us constantly.
      Star Wars got me through until New Wave could pick up the slack, because that's what great music and movies do!

    Also in July 1980, the greatest moment in cinematic history occurred when "Airplane!" premiered (or maybe crash-landed) in theatres nationwide. Incredibly, "Caddyshack" also premiered during the same month! It was definitely a good year for comedy.

    I have mostly good memories of 1980. Started my sophomore year in high school and met some wonderful friends, a few of whom I still keep in touch with to this day. After having caddied at a local country club that summer, I started my first real job at McDonald's in early November. I also got pneumonia for the first time in my life that summer while at band camp. I also remember Mount St. Helens erupting, the presidential election, and John Lennon being shot and killed. Definitely some highs, but also a few big lows that year.

    What a way to bookend a year. The American hockey team defeating the Soviets remains the most memorable moment in sports for me. We were in such a collective funk at the time and those kids made us believe in miracles at a time when we were desperate for something positive to happen. It was huge. Then that a-hole shot John Lennon to end the year on a complete down note. For my friends and I, that was our Kennedy assassination-like moment. My room mate and I had come in from a night out at the corner bar and we turned on the TV. The sound was turned down but we saw John's image on the 11:00 PM news. We figured it might be a concert announcement since Double Fantasy had just been released. When we turned up the volume and heard the newscaster tell us he had been murdered we just stood there staring at nothing, not saying a word. The only thing I could think was who the hell would want to kill John Lennon? I called a dear friend of mine who used to sing along with Beatle albums with me when we were kids and we both cried. That is the only time I have ever cried over a celebrity dying. I can't believe his little boy is older now than John was when he was killed. RIP John. I'm sure you were there to show George around the place when he arrived.
    But not all was doom and gloom. 1980 was the first time I got to vote in a presidential election. I was a newly minted citizen and I remember being so proud I carried my paperwork to the polling station as proof. This was a moment I had waited for since I was five years old. And the woman at the desk didn't even look. Oh well, it was one of the highlights of my life and I will always have fond memories of 1980 for that moment alone.

      I was at band practice when Mt. St Helens blew. It was surreal because it was a sunny blue sky in Seattle west of the volcano, but to the east of the volcano it was literally...black. During a subsequent eruption Seattle got a dusting of ash. I remember going out to my car to go to work. It was drizzling so the ash was like a thin layer of mud on my windshield. Turned on the windshield wipers....BIG MISTAKE!!! The ash was silicon and the tiny crystals instantly scratched up my windshield. Had to get it replaced. Also Boeing put caps over all their jet engines so the ash wouldn't get into the engine and ruin it. I was in a Beatle band and had to leave work when I heard about Lennon. I was devastated and didn't want my co-workers to see my crying.

    What a year for me. Turned 12 this year(May 7). The 80's were the beginning of puberty, the start of my teen/young adult yrs. I remember the John Lennon shooting/tragedy like yesterday. Was watching the Monday night football game(Patriots-Dolphins)when Howard Cosell made the 1st announcement John was shot. The game went on and after a time out/long commercial break, Cosell announced his death. As a Memphian, we had a heat wave that summer that killed dozens of people(mainly the elderly). This was Magic Johnson(and the Celtics' Larry Bird)rookie year when the Lakers beat the 76ers in 6 games. In game 6, Magic played center and almost got a triple-double. This game was also tape delayed through most of the country(the NBA on CBS aired the game starting at 10:30PM Friday Central time).

      The 80s were hands down the greatest decade in the last 60 years for America. Society was finally integrated, we had creativity off the charts, people were more likely to at least have common sense, and we actually MADE stuff IN America, rather than importing crap from sweatshops in dictatorship countries. Also add in the fact that, this was the ONLY decade from the 1940s-2010s that America was not involved in any major wars (even the 50s had Korea). A time of optimism, hard work and hope, things that are SORELY missing today.

    I remember the Pennsylvania Lottery "fix,fix,fix" scandal very well. The numbers (then) were drawn at WTAE in Pittsburgh, And Nick Perry was a local "celebrity" (TV host.) The station was about a half miles from my house, LOL. The weird part is that it didn't "shock" me or particularly BOTHER me, for this reason: Even IF every drawing was fixed, It's still a random "game": "They" don't know if YOU (the player) is or is not also "playing" the 4s & 6s. "They" DO know "They" will "win", and YOU might ALSO win! Is THAT corrupt? Hell Yeah - It IS!. (This ain't Poker or Blackjack!). Now think about THIS when you buy a "scratch-off" lottery ticket, The SAME THING is going on. The people making the tickets (The State and the contractors who print them) ALREADY KNOW what tickets ARE winners AND where they are. (They intentionally spread them out so there are not concentrated in any specific area). The difference was that "fix,fix,fix" was perpetrated by NON STATE employees. The effect on the players is NO different than a preprinted "scratch off" (Picking numbers is "dumb luck" for the player). This the issue with ANY form of "random" gambling. You ARE being screwed, The difference is WHO is screwing you. This "rant" isn't really against gambling, Just "chance/random" gambling, like slot machines and "scratch-offs". Sports betting at least has a verifiable outcome and requires some knowledge on the part of the bettor. (The GAMES could be rigged, but at LEAST you can watch the game being played) and card games have an element of SKILL as well as "luck". Since we KNOW randomized "bets" are a ripoff, I'd rather be ripped off by a volunteer fire department or some such charity "drawing". You MIGHT win, but the loses (or "skim") is in reality a donation anyway.
