If You Could Live Anywhere on OAHU...(as a local)

  • If we could live anywhere on Oahu, where would we live? This is a great question. Since everyone has different preferences on where they'd like to live, this isn't about the best place to live on Oahu. Instead, we talk about where we'd like to live on Oahu if we could live anywhere. Housing is getting expensive in Hawaii and most of the affordable homes are in west Oahu. But as a young family, we can dream of getting our dream home one day on Oahu.
A big mahalo to my wife for joining me on this video and sharing her dreams with me. :)

That's what they call, sunny and partly cloudy, with passing showers. And when the Tradewinds really get going it's windy, mostly sunny with passing showers. And chances of pineapple rain.

I used to live in Kailua on the corner of Kalaheo and the Pali. 100 steps from the beach!!!
I won't lie though when I lived in Makiki it was so nice to be able to ride my bike to work and be so close to everything a young single person would like.

My aunt and uncle moved there in the 50s, also steps across a vacant lot to the beach. My cousins were raised there. I first visited them in the 60s. It was a paradise. It felt like I was unlucky to be in Texas, while they were on the beach in Hawaii. Cut to twenty years later, I moved to Hawaii.

Kailua was the world’s best kept secret until Playboy Magazine’s Top 100 places listed Kailua Beach as the Best Beach Park . Then the Obamas came to town . The selfie stick crowd took over my childhood hideout, the Lanikai Pillbox. Now Whole Foods is there to provide organic toilet paper to DINKs (Double Income No Kids) buying and flipping houses in Kailua for $3 Million a pop . Yes . The ‘90’s were great times, but the 1970’s were better ! In 1978 the US Secret Service was interviewing perspective families in Kailua for President Jimmy Carter as a house guest. He was going to be Grand Marshall of the 1978 Kailua Easter Parade . He canceled do to Mid East conflict. Too bad !

Wife and I grad UH, moved to the Mainland (WA) 'cause low Hawai'i salaries and couldn't afford a home. Enjoy your videos. Oh...you just named Kaneohe as your 1st choice...Kaneohe was my birth town. Lived there '46-'54 before we moved to Kailua. Lived in Halekou which in those days was only a few homes, mostly pasture land and a couple daries. What would become Ho'omaluhia Gardens was practically in our back yard. Malama Pono & Aloha from WA State

I was born in and grew up in what is now mililani about 150 yards from kipapa elementary school. I went to leilehua intermediate and high school. Graduated in 61. Went into the USMC in 61 and traveled throughout the Far East and Southeast Asia. Got out and went back to Hawaii. In 82 moved to California because my military ex wife got transferred there. We got divorced but I stayed in California because it was a lot cheaper. I would move to wahiawa if I were younger. I miss the small town feel of wahiawa. I spent a lot of my younger years there. The temperatures are cooler in mililani and wahiawa than the leeward side and Honolulu. Still have ohana in waipio acres and mililani.

@@kimberleyike2168 true. It is a hike to Mililani for Walmart and even further for Costco. I just go to Malamas in Haleiwa or Waialua Fresh if I need something quick. There are fresh veggie and fruit stands over by Waialua too. And of course Foodland in Pupukea is good too. They have the best Spicy Poke bowl for miles.
You just get used to being strategic about shopping; plan trips, and get to be friends with your neighbors. We always ask if anyone needs something when we go. They do the same so it can help cut down the number of times you have to go.
No question though, traffic is no joke especially on the weekends. So planning the day and time is super important.

Hahahahah.... your wife is so funny & cute. I love her sound effects, she's getting to be so local. Great choices for both sides. Since I grew up in Manoa, Kaimuki, Kaneohe, Kailua and now live Kapolei, I know the aesthetics of those places. So many great reasons when you live in a home versus a Condo or townhouse, which I've also done. The two car situation is always a bummer, especially when there's no street parking or you have to move the car every 10-12 hours. I'm partial to Kailua, as you could live there and virtually never have to go to town for anything. Beaches, movie theater (b4 had choices, now one), restaurants, hiking, golf, schools, bus routes, biking, shopping but most of all you could walk easily around the town, if you're young/healthy. The walking/biking is easy, mostly flat ground and it usually always has breezes. It rains but not constantly. It's rarely humid. Community is good people, parks are decent, especially they have a gym, swimming pool and tennis courts and library. One of the pluses, is that the area is mostly unrestricted about clothes lines. Having air dried clothing is so much preferable than dryer clothes. Good one, still other great choices not mentioned but its a preference thing especially on what activities one does. Stay awesome and keep her drum roll.

Don't let it fool you. Its just looks that way. People are the same and there is a good community there. People dazzled by the beaches but its only part of life there in that town. Try Nene Goose Bakery, Blossoms Okazuya next to Enchanted Lakes Safeway. The Food sells out like crazy. The Food Company across of Kailua Safeway was great when they were Enchanted Lakes. Cinnamons is always a staple great eat. The little shops across the old Bowling alley has crowds. The tennis courts and volleyball court behind the fire station, plus the pool and gym. The marsh trail, pillbox, Olamana, Maunawili hikes. So much to do in a little area.

Thanks for this video…I like the local perspective on the various areas that I’ve been researching.
My plan is to move to Oahu once my daughter is off to college in 8 yrs. I research - aka daydream - about the move every day. There are so many interesting mini-pockets of Oahu that it is a bit overwhelming….the parts in Waialua by the water, the various ridges with the dramatic views, the northern villages south of Turtle Bay without the overcrowded beaches, the various green villages in the middle of the island, etc.
The three things I want are not too dry, relatively convenience to basic shopping and close to the water…which likely points to Kaneohe or Kailua/Lanikai if an “affordable” one springs up. Will be interesting to see what the future holds…anyway, it’s fun to hear what others value and consider their ideal spots…

her #2 pick?? don't remember but maybe I got up for a minute to do something? and missed it?🤔 but loved her hilarious drum roll 🥁sound effects!😄😆
and I'm really grateful that you make the videos you post! you & your wife are so genuine, so down to earth and it's easy to see you're truly decent human beings. and so glad I found your channel, I think a few years ago? because there's all kinds of content @ TH-cam.
but among some of my preferred videos are those posted by everyday householders, like yourselves..who are stars✨💫⭐💫 in your own right, imho. *real* people, *real* talk..sometimes serious, educational & informatiive..and sometimes fun & entertaining & informative in *that* way, too!
and I often find myself doing mini-marathons, watching them, whenever they show up on my homepage or subscription feed.🤗🎈🎉🍾🎊🥂
and it *was* interesting to hear about both of your faves, really enjoyed the video & the scenery..and also, a request - below - if it's ok:
because I haven't been to Hawaii since I was 9 years old.😥 Mom's best friend, who she met in Europe when they were still single & only in their twenties!,decades ago....she settled there, did nicely in real estate, then decided to stay long term..and the raised a family there with her husband.
and I didn't go with Mom on her subsequent trips to visit her friend, so I'm not familiar with the the islands or the names of the any of the neighborhoods...or where they are relative to the coastal areas...although I DO look forward to visiting again, as an adult, seeing as many of them as I can in person..& visiting a Food Land poke salad🥗counter! and *now,* also that *Off The Hook!,* poke place!😁🎣🐟🐡👍
and ok, long way around to my request and please don't hate me for asking:
do you think in future videos you'd be able to - at some point - zoom out on *all* Hawaii maps you show us? so those of us unfamiliar with the lay-of-the-land can see a whole island every time?
like when you show neighborhoods you're speaking about? and do you think you could use only ONE red or other colored/easy to see marker..in order for us to be able to delineate where exactly a location is. re: how close it is to the water...and other locations we might have heard of? that we can also see named on the maps used.
because the clunky giant house image marker was, for me anyway, making it difficult to understand *exactly where* those neighborhoods were located on the island map you were mentioning. for instance, I'm still not clear on where *Salt Lake* is on it..and I froze the image to try and see where it was - but to no avail.
and the red marker in the middle was also a bit distracting because it seemed to stay there, no matter which neighborhood you were talking about..maybe if the marker could be at the point where each neighborhood really is?
re: this video, for example: if you had time maybe include a few more photos....of each area mentioned..that would have been great + a few of the home properties in each locale, even if they weren't for sale..so we could see what some of the properties look like...just to get a sense of the places being discussed.
and the great news is that *Wikimedia Commons* & the *Creative Commons* websites + many other *'copy-Left'* sites offer *100% free-to-use images* for videos, etc.,..so creators can be free from worrying about copyright claims.🤸‍♀️🏄🏾‍♀️🌞🤸🏾‍♂️🏄🏽‍♂️⛵
and I don't mean to sound nit-picky, so please forgive me if this does sound like that. because I do understand it takes time, intention & energy to create even an unedited vlogging video, let alone a video that's a huge production project..snd it's very generous of you to share any parts of your life with us at all & thank you for doing that.
it's just that I paused the video several times to do image searches..and I'd love to be able to, instead, stay focused on your thoughtful content rather than stopping a video to try and find photographs re: can be a visual topic.📱🎥📸📹
in any case, thanks again for taking the time to share your perspectives about Life in Hawaii.👸🏾

I always couldn't fathom the asymmetries in the differences with middle to high schools. I did a lot of classroom visits for the Bishop Museum. Me #3 I'd pick top of hill in Waiahole Valley because you get bigger yards and the agriculture zoning #2, Hauula/Punaluu just out of earshot of Kam Highway, #1 top of Kahawalu Dr in upper Nuuanu, since you get town access with windward green without insane up down of St. Louis Heights or Sierra Dr. Frick... I'm homesick now.

Aloha guys! Great, informative and for me slightly nostalgic videos! I saw the title of this video and asked myself the same question before you both answered and the answer I came up with after thinking for a little bit was “exactly where I grew up or close to it”..I grew up in Moanalua Valley (went to Moanalua elementary and middle school before moved to the mainland)..as a kid my mom and I would hike into the valley, and my friends and I would hike and ride our bikes all around the neighborhood..a couple times we rode to salt lake 😬 I remember it feeling epic like we really did something lol sometimes we would eat fries at the golf course..the best memories..it was great being close to Honolulu (my mom worked in Liliha) but it didn’t feel like it, like you said. I live in WA state now but will be going to Hawaii for my nephews wedding this summer, and can’t wait to go back, it’s been many years. 1) Kahala
    2) Waialae Iki. Imo better value than Hawaii Loa Ridge as there’s a whole section that’s not a gated neighborhood so you don’t have to pay HOA fees. Probably the safest non-gated neighborhood. Oceanviews are fantastic from every house, streets are wide, clean, nicely paved just like Hawaii Loa Ridge. Also not far away from town, just above Waialae golf course and Kahala.
    3) Kaimuki. Specifically the section between the freeway and KCC and borders are Oceanview Drive down to 18th Ave.

Good choices in places to live here on Oahu. Our family moved to Kaneohe to or new house in 1965(the house alone back then was $27,000 new). I went to Kapunahala Elementary and then King Middle and Castle High. Moved out to town on Ward Ave almost at the top near Punchbowl (Prospect St) came back in 26 years to help take care of my aging parents. Yes, I’m one of those you talk about that inherited a home. I live with my youngest son now that’s 20yrs old (Roosevelt Graduate my other 2 kids are McKinley Graduates, Go Tigers). Our house is in good condition as I keep it up on regular basics and try to teach my son how to fix things or replace them. You can save big bucks if you can do it yourself (I love to cut the grass, yes I know that's weird but I really do). We live only 2 blocks from the Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden entrance. I look out my front door and see the Koolau Mountains every morning with a coffee in my hand and see the waterfalls and greenery without any obstruction because of the Botanical Garden, no new homes will be built (open view). I can see the radar and the old naval radar building for the Haiku Stairs clearly if there isn't any clouds. The older homes are now $950.000+ to 1.3+ million that sold recently here in Keapuka (and they are still going up as I type). Like you were saying in another video, past down or keep your home for your family which I will do with this home. It’s really good not to have any HOA or other Fees or rules, plain old Fee Simple property. My son walks to work to Windward Shopping Center which is a stone throw away. Family is very important like you say but my older brother that was born in Tokyo didn’t help, call or write his parents in their time of need (hurt my mother as he’s the oldest son) so he has a place in Oregon where he can stay by himself. I took my youngest son and we helped them until they passed, I really have a good feeling inside me for doing so. Kept my son in Roosevelt so I had to drive him to school every day from Kaneohe and pick him up but like you said, about 20 minutes and that’s in rush hour on weekdays. So Kaneohe isn’t really far if you look at the driving time factor to anywhere because of the 3 tunnels (H-3 tunnel made the traffic move a lot faster on the Pali and Wilson tunnels now) and I’m right by all 3. If I want to go to a nice beach, Kailua is a hop and a skip away unless you have a boat and go to the Sand Bar in Kaneohe Bay or drive a little up the coast toward the Northshore. I did love the town side but after coming back to Kaneohe, I realized all the great things like the quietness, low crime rate, low homeless and the streams where I taught my 3 kids to fish. It’s all good here in Kaneohe. I can show them where I used to play and hang out back in the days. The best part is, there is almost no more room to build new homes in Kaneohe which is making the housing market fly off the roof on this side on the older properties!

@@HelloFromHawaii Yeah they are an eye sore and I didn’t like them at first but they grow on you after a while. I go through them at least 4 times a day and they are ok after getting used to them. People kept using Keapuka as a thorough fair to speed through or skip the intersection on Kam Hwy and the Likelike (after the H-3 was built). They were speeding through Keapuka but now it’s ok, no speeding or traffic. It’s ok if you just have to drive straight through as I do, just a little S swerve. Turing right they don’t get in the way at all, only when you turn left at those roundabouts, you have to use a little more caution. People just have to learn the driving rules about roundabouts so they know not to stop in them to take a left turn (cars in a roundabout always has the right of way, cars entering the roundabout has to yield or wait before entering if the car is going to make a turn in front of you). As our island gets more populated, we’ll see them more and more as in the States and Europe. The first one I came across was the one at Keeaumoku and Heulu streets as I was heading up to Roosevelt High School. I was surprised but since then we do have them in multiple spots on Oahu and they’re building more (Kailua, Salt Lake, etc.) to slow people down. 😎

I totally agree with the both of you. I currently live in Japan, but if I had a choice of places to live in Hawaii I would also like to live in Kaneohe, Salt Lake and Manoa. Mililani is far but it’s relatively cool (temperature wise) and the schools out there are really good too.

i wouldn't want Kaneohe nor Kailua --- too much salt water corrosive air from the ocean spray that travel in the air... cars/appliances/aluminum window frames would rust easily... I like Kapahulu and Manoa (though Manoa has too often a lot of rain/misty days and nights)..

Well, you're talking about windward side vs. leeward side. Windward side's got that wonderful salty air, but not so wonderful for metal things.
