    Thomas I envy you your roomy workshop and storage. I wanted to thank you for taking the time to explain a little about the bearing ID, as you can imagine ordering the parts for a 4'x 4' CNC Router is a big deal, and now I have been asked "Do I want the SFU or DFU ballnut with my HGR 25 Hiwin linear rail kit. Well I would sooner have rack and pinion but there are good things about each method of motivating. But in that moment I realized I had better know exactly what all this nomenclature is meaning.

    Thanks for the information, this was really helpful with figuring out a problem I was having with my printer!
    I noticed that you briefly touched on measuring threaded rods in this video. Identifying and selecting threaded rods is definitely something I've had trouble with while repairing, upgrading, and troubleshooting my printer. Is there any guide out there that explains the terminology behind threaded rods? Thanks!

    I'm toying with a magnetic mounted attachment for liner axises ,the right magnet with a steel greased plate attached to the belt could eliminate belt and stepper chatter completely . Key is the right magnet . the liner bering noes would still be there but V channel and delroin wheels are very smooth .

    Just a side note. Try to research where the bearings (name brand ) were made. I spent good money for what I thought were SKF German Bearings but ended up with Vietnamese made SKF Bearings. And yes...Country of manufacture has a great deal to do with the final product you receive. That being said from now on I will email and ask country of manufacture before I click on Purchase.

    Linear bearings don't work nearly as well as radial ones :(
    Some people are starting to 3D print reusable bushings that are lined with PTFE piece inserts, like cutoffs off the Bowden tube or PTFE wire, so the printed enclosure doesn't touch the rod, only a few patches of PTFE do. When it grows loose, you can just replace the PTFE pieces and you're all set again. Maybe something to try.

    My experience with the Chinese linear bearings is that it pays to wash out the factory 'lubricant' with a light machine oil or something like WD40 (which is NOT a lubricant, it's mostly solvents) and then re-lubricate.

      I agree with using a 3:1 oil and not grease in a non sealed bearing. The grease will collect and hold dirt while an oil will slowly flush itself and help to keep the bearing clean. Provided you take the time to lubricate it occasionally.

    • @tHaH4x0r
      @tHaH4x0r ปีที่แล้ว

      @@anderslarsson7123 SKF recommends grease for linear ball bearings. Ex. SKF Linear ball bearings catalogue 2003-08 (p. 16) -> "....linear ball bearings are, in general,
      designed for grease lubrication....". I believe they do this, as linear ball bearings generally mostly do low speed operation, where oil has a hard time to form a film, and thus grease is better at protecting the bearing. I think in general for high speed applications (ex. sewing machines, engines) oil is used. Even the orientation of the bearing matters, as to how oil might pool in places where it cannot recirculate or even drip out.
      As for the specific type of grease, it seems to be highly dependent on the application. Probably a lithium grease of viscosity class 00 to 3 is fine. Some sources (ex. linearmotiontips) do mention you should not use PTFE or graphite type grease.

    I got an Prusa Mendel i3 printer and are going to upgrade the X-axis, going from vertical to horizontal.
    My current linear bearings is ok, but a little loose(vertical X-axis).
    I was wondering if switching to radial bearing may be a solution to try out , have you tried this?

    • @Phizev
      @Phizev 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Thomas Sanladerer "Which was everything but an elegant solution."
      Do you mean that while it was a good solution, it failed in all respects of elegance? Or was it that it was just a poor solution?
      I am asking as I can either go with high quality radial bearings, or low quality linear bearings.

      Scott Dickey imo motorcycle or bicycle chain lube works well on both the linear rods and screws , it's slightly waxy so it doesn't pick up dust and grit as easily, provided you use it sparingly

    Every time I try to use radial ball bearings in a project, I can't get a shaft that will have the proper interference fit. Linear bearings usually come matched with the proper shaft. Can you point me to a source for stainless steel shafts meant for radial bearing in various lengths? I'm not a professional and have only Amazon as my source for steel shafts and those sources won't give me the tolerance on their shafts. Help!

    Good info, but you need to look up 'backlash' in an engineering text. To quote Princess Bride, “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.” Backlash is, strictly speaking, movement induced by a change in speed due to flexing, stretching, or torsional stress. e.g - Motor stops, print head stops, the frame/belt/linear rail 'un-flexes' and something moves (and usually oscillates) when it shouldn't - that's backlash. In your car, when you brake hard, stop, and the car shifts back on its suspension - that's another example. Something that moves unpredictably because it's loose can make backlash worse, but it's not backlash in itself.

    Three more hints. I've designed and then built a number of robots and when using linear bearings, always get the 'split' type, which allows you to adjust the radial pre-loading inside the block assembly. Next, opt for bellows covers that run the full lengths of travel. In 3D printers the vapor from the melting plastic, as well as dust in the average work area, puts layers on the surfaces that gets worked in as the bearings roll over the tiny particles, bellows covers keeps things clean. My last hint here is… forget drive belts, instead use stainless steel bands, they're far more precise, far cleaner, thermally far more stable, and ultra durable.
