I wouldn't say his contributions were/are overlooked at all. I mean, what else can you do? He was not part of the band. They mixed him up way up there; had his name on the sleeve, took him on tour. I think every band that had him for a while would have made him a member.

Elliott! that was a great post. Namaste. I play piano. I love Leon Russell and Billy Joel , Elton John etc. I can confirm under oath, that Nicky Hopkins (RIP) was having FUN impressing Mick Jagger and auditioning (in his mind) to be a supply piano player for the Rolling Stones. To be sure. God bless him.

    • @Bluzian74
      @Bluzian74 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

On the contrary, I think the piano gives the song legitimacy and solidity. That's why it does hold the whole song together. It remains constant in the E,D,A progression. I used to play it with guitar, but now I play it on piano and let the other instruments fall into place. Cheers.

What really made Nicky special IMO, was that he knew when to play, or not to play. When to hold back. He builds this track organically here. I know players who would have come in from Bar 1 with the way he is playing at around 3:30 mark. One sees that in many of the great players. I was listening to isolated tracks of Clapton o/d his lead guitar on Beatles 'Guitar Weeps" - half of the time he is chak-ing along, not doing anything. So cool.

    • @john-giovannicorda3456
      @john-giovannicorda3456 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah. Like Nicky was always aware of the finished product, and what was needed and what was not needed. It's like he was thinking as an arranger, who was also jamming on the piano when the moments was right.

Nicky Hopkins played piano on John Lennons Imagine album and played the incredible piano part for the song Jealous Guy. Years later he ran into John and asked him why he was never invited back to play on his other albums or work with him. He wondered if John didnt like his playing. Lennon replied...'I didn't want to bother you cuz you seemed so busy working with The Stones'. At which Hopkins said he would have of course wanted to play with Lennon again and they both shook their heads over the misunderstanding.

    • @SuperNevile
      @SuperNevile 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

He played the great riff on Oh Yoko! I used to think John's playing had improved since Beatle's days :-). Also, he didn't play one style (like Ian did), listen to "She's A Rainbow". The riff for "We Love You" makes the song too.

I went to a small high school in Los Angeles called newbridge. They were only about 10 to 12 people in each grade. The school catered to an interesting group of children of famous people like ken Norton and Chyna Phillips and Burt Bacharach etc anyways most of us were using drugs quite heavily it was 1980-ish and the science teacher did a lot of alternative things like teaching us meditation anyways he brought his friend Nikki Hopkins in to talk with us I don't think any of us really understood how important of a musician he was. He talked to us about using drugs and getting addicted to heroin kind of a scared straight talk he was very friendly and kind and did it out of kindness

After listening to this I have even more respect for Hopkins than I had before. I mean, the song actually has a very simple musical structure (you can hear that in the exposé, the first 50 seconds), it just thrives off what the musicians put into it (how he starts decorating his chords from 0:50, and especially from 4:12).

Thank you very much for this. The photograph is amazing too. No special bench or anything thing. I wonder if the guitar is vibrating sympathetically and plugged in with the amp on. A friend of mine has the same guitar. The piano part is fantastic. The walk up part from A to E sounds wrong or off on the 2nd note but it isn’t. In 9th grade I got thrown out of a friend’s basement by his parents when we were rehearsing this song. He was the drummer I was the guitarist. Our singer and I were never ever to allowed in or around their house again. Sorry to say our friend went to Africa on a mission for his church and died from a bacterial infection in his heart while on his spiritual mission to convert. He was so talented on the acoustic guitar & drums.

An amusing example is a sort of basement tapes recording he did with Jagger, Wyman, and Watts along with Ry Cooder, called "Jamming with Edward." The piano and the bass are so important yet so overlooked. This is their best track ever, by far. So complicated, so thick. Flagship of the Rolling Stones fleet. In this time period they were at the height of their musical proficiency, and their music was at the height of pop culture. Heavyweight champions of the world, in my opinion. Mean it. Get down.

Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long years
Stole million man's soul an faith
And I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
    Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate
    Pleased to meet you
    Hope you guess my name
    But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game
    Stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
    Killed Tsar and his ministers
    Anastasia screamed in vain
    I rode a tank
    Held a general's rank
    When the blitzkrieg raged
    And the bodies stank
    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
    Ah, what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
    I watched with glee
    While your kings and queens
    Fought for ten decades
    For the gods they made
    I shouted out
    Who killed the Kennedys?
    When after all
    It was you and me
    Let me please introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached Bombay
    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
    But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby
    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
    But what's confusing you
Is just the nature of my game
Just as every cop is a criminal
    And all the sinners saints
    As heads is tails
    Just call me Lucifer
'Cause I'm in need of some restraint
    So if you meet me
    Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
    Use all your well-learned politnesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste, mm yeah
    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, mm yeah
    But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, mm mean it, get down
    Woo, who
    Oh yeah, get on down
    Oh yeah
    Aah yeah
Tell me baby, what's my name?
Tell me honey, can ya guess my name?
Tell me baby, what's my name?
I tell you one time, you're to blame
    What's my name
Tell me, baby, what's my name?
Tell me, sweetie, what's my name?
