@@Doobie3010 Not just to save money. There was a BBC head in the 1970's who thought that all the old black & white shows that they still had were commercially worthless in the color era.
Even popular and commercially successful shows on the export market like Vision On and Doctor Who have lost episodes, and the only show made during the pre-color era known to have all episodes survive in some visual form is Steptoe and Son.

BBC we also had at our primary school, they had the large unit on a trolley thing.. I only really remember Eddie Kid jump challenge game and Math and English software. Commodore 16 was the first home computer I used, my older brother owned one and then a year or two later he upgraded to a C128, that is what got me into Commodore 64 software. I was at Primary School from about 1983-1988 and 1988-1993 secondary school (born 1977) a good year.

In retrospect, the development on the home computer market was very dense in the years from '77 with Commodore PET to '87 when the Acorn Archimedes appeared and everything else between them. I was in my teens back then so it was half a life! The uncrowned king of this market was probably Jack Tramiel. Father of the PET/VIC20/C64 and the Atari ST. Both went huge in the relatively small target group of digital pioneers. But from '89 on the IBM PC clones finally took the home desks over. Until 20 yrs later Smartphones and Tablets made the Internet more handy. Only Apple still has this close connection between product and brand, which at that time distinguished all devices and still makes their magic today.

They had to give code examples from three different machines (BBC Micro was one of them) because BASIC was implemented differently on each one. Ever thought of doing an episode where you write a simple game in BASIC, and show how it varies on several machines to show off their strengths and limitations? I mean, now that you have the BBC Micro...

I love all the humor you all put into these videos! And I’d have loved to get any of these boxes of stuff for christmas as a kid. Even now, for that matter. Anyway, relating to when it seemed Puppyfractic had a treat caught in her mouth, I should relay something that happened to my dog years ago. I gave her one of those Pedigree Dentastix treats, and a little while later she seemed to be really struggling with her mouth. It turned out that when she bit down on the stick, it sheared off on both sides at the same time and got stuck across her mouth, bridging from one side to the other because it was wedged between her molars on opposite sides. It was lucky I noticed her problem because I was just about to leave for work. Some of those treats can be potentially dangerous!

From a purely technical perspective I think the BBC model B was the best 8bit machine ever made for the home computer market back then. The ports were fantastic, the upgradability was amazing, it had Econet (networking locally and online via a modem), it had a Tube Port, allowing external processors to be added (Look at the Raspberry Pi hack). The special version of BASIC was the best BASIC. The font was brilliant... Basically it was the dog's spherical ornaments!!

Puppyfractic is one spoilt doggy. I think them doggy boxes are brilliant, I can't think of anything comparable in the UK. It was definitely a Commodore fest with all them pre Christmas goodies. Nothing better than having a mystery box to open. Christmas can wait :).

It’s the original letter the kid got from the BBC 👍 Most schools had one BBC way back we used to look at it and it was too expensive to touch. Dixon’s was the dogs ….. back in the day our generations PC world.

Glad you got a beeb. It's party trick was using the expansion port to connect a co-processor, which today many people hook a Raspberry Pi up to, and radically speed up the machine. Potentially that could mean A NEW CHESS VIDEO (assuming there's a chess game on the beeb that does expert level moves).

The red mark on the Plus 4 datasette is likely from plasticizers (chemical softeners) that leeched out of the cable. NEC TurboGrafx-16 stuff does the same thing and you get little melty burn marks everywhere plastic was left in contact with the cables during storage.

Great fun filled unboxing, there's never a dull moment when familyfractic is on screen. Some great machines to play with but don't forget to check for rifa caps in the beebs power supply before switching on, they have a tendency to go up in smoke. I don't know if the model B has them or not like the BBC master system.

Brilliant mate! A BBC Micro! It’s a computer I’ve never used one. It never made across the channel in sufficient quantities. But I think it’s a coder’s dream. A better basic than Microsoft basic and an inline assembler.
I hope we get a few nice episodes here about it and show use the basic inline assembler. If I recall from reading you just start a basic line with [ and on the next basic lines you write your 6502 and then end it on the last line with ]. But I could be so wrong.

The red goo could be the inner insulation melting where it is in contact with the copper wire. A more common reaction produces green goo which can unfortunately make the insulation conductive. If possible, do a full teardown and cleanup soon. Be prepared to change the whole cable if there's goo coming out of it.

  • @andheeid
    @andheeid 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

21:20 that red goo maybe a melted/disintegrated rubber band that's binding the cable

The fins are fine, but always thought the Atari ST line( other than the Mega models) was the king of the fins. :)
While at least two of my childhood friends went on to be come successful in their own right, no one in acting.
Always nice, for me at least, to know that someone I used to spend a lot of time with, were successful in life.

I got a plus 4 and a c16, at boot sales in the 90s. Maybe a tenner each. They come with a joystick adapter lead. Mini din to 9 pin d. So it used regular joysticks. I thought it was just a ploy by Commodore to sell more peripherals, use a new plug. The designer of the plus 4 has a video where he says there wasn't enough space to fit 9 pin d connectors, on the case of the plus 4
