    My late grandfather passed one on to my father. It looks just like this one. I have quite a bit of experience with firearms, and I have never handled a piece as sweet as that Colt Python. Absolutely beautiful and buttery smooth precision. Nothing else like it. And man those 357s are TRUCKIN'! Slapping that steel hard. Love the round. Love the gun even more. Great video as always, sir.

      The Colt Python was considered the finest revolver made, some say the finest firearm ever made, for decades. I still say it is the best revolver ever, except for my S&W 29 .44 magnum.

      I hope you can get yourself over here! I lived in England 15 years as a "Yank". When I got back to America I built up a fine collection of handguns and rifles. I own a fine collection of Colts and S&W's, H&K's and SIG's amongst many other firearms. Hurray for the USA!

    Thanks for a very fine video. I'm lucky to own two Python's a vintage 1969 and a mint condition 1979 both with 6" barrel lengths and Colt's standard wood grips. Two of my other favorites revolvers are the S&W Model 19-4 and my 29-10.

    Well, John wrote about it a few years back, I think it was in "American Handgunner". He began feeling pains in his wrist, went to a specialist and the x-rays showed his wrist bones had tiny fissures. I believe he had to get an operation later on and he can't fire heavy loads on a regular basis. I had a similar problem with my 4" Model 29 that kept me out of the range for a year. Anaconda was not made by S&W. It was manufactured by Colt and most parts were investment casts, just like the Ruger.

  • @PeekaPeep

    Worst thing about this gun IS THAT THEY STOPPED MAKING THEM ALMOST 10 YEARS AGO!!! To this day, I still think it's the best revolver ever made (as far as .357s go, ftm). Perfection, indeed. Hope it makes a comeback someday...

    357 as a man stopper is sufficient. If I am going into bear country 44magnum is as small as I would want to take. That being said I have taken a few deer with the 44 magnum. One shot dropped them in a there tracks with 240 gr. soft points. Never had a 357 until 8 years ago. Enjoy it immensely. Own one Ruger security six and one Ruger Gp100 . Real work horses. The Colt Python is a beautiful revolver but sadly not made anymore and used prices if found are astronomical for most people me included. Thank you for showing and shooting these revolvers!

    About 1976 I waked into a gun shop in Norwich, CT intending to gift myself with a 6" Python... and can you believe it, the counterman talked me into an 8 3/8" M27 instead? I guess he didn't work on commission. :-) I still have never owned a Python.

    Finest revolver of the 20th Century hands-down. I remember as a kid watching "Dirty Harry" in "Magnum Force" and although the Model 29 ruled supreme it was aptly challenged by the Colt Python carried by the dirty Cop played by David Soul. Both impeccable works of Art! Merry Christmas to All!

    I bought a Python from a guy walking around at a LGS 3 weeks ago ( 4 inch barrel made in 1975) It is truly a work of art in the blue steel revolver world. I would say it's a strong 95% gun, maybe a 98%er, with no turn ring on the cylinder. I'm dying to shoot it, but given its condition, I'm not going to. Oh well, I guess I now own my first safe queen.....

    • @duelist1954
      @duelist1954  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Keith Williams if it is 95% you ought to shoot it at least once. If it was unfired I might feel differently.

      I have a Python Elite, shoot it you won’t regret it if you do... You will regret it if you don’t.

    • @mknight5159
      @mknight5159 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chrisjeannebroxton1934 Exactly. I bought one that seemed to be brand new. Not a scuff on the hammer. It had a little speck of rust on the trigger and under the trigger guard but other than that, unfired. I ended up looking at it for a couple months and now I have about 400 rounds down range with it. You'd have to be insane to have just one Python and not shoot it. I can see if you have a couple collectors peices, but if you find yourself fortunate enough to own at least 1, shoot that thing. The Python was meant to be shot. I feel bad for the guys that put the Python to rest due to money reasons. You can't take it with you. And someone will exploit that beautiful revolver some day. Like taking a girls virginity. Yeah its a sexy ass revolver but half the beauty is in that action and just shooting it. I've heard that that the Python starts to break-in really nice after a few thousand rounds too. Time will tell. The Python sure is a sweetie so its easy to see ones dilemma about turning it into a safe queen. They just don't make them like they use too.

    Very nice Mike! After seeing the movie "Electra Glide in Blue" where Robert Blake carried a nickle plated 6" Python I just had to have one. In my opinion it is the most beautiful handgun ever made. This is one they will be prying from my cold, dead hands...
    BTW, the famous, or rather infamous, anti-gun statue at the U.N. headquarters in N.Y.C. is a Colt Python with it's barrel twisted in a knot.
    I think you meant to say you were shooting 125 grain bullets, not 325. ;-)

    Poor Mr. Beliveau, it was the little things, at first as he got on in years, like 325 gr 357 ammo. Then he cast doubt on the fabulous 44 with the Keith 429421. Shortly after he forgot the names of his kids. He could get by by calling his wife Hon.......but he remembered his dogs name and was always a great one handed pistol shooter.

    Everything said about the Python re: quality is correct. However, a friend acquired a Python in the 1970’s, and that particular gun, although fine shooting jacketed ammo, was a nightmare shooting lead reloads. Even at moderate velocities the bore would lead up so as to obscure the rifling within 15-20 rounds. Slugging the bore yielded .355 or so, rather than .357. He traded it.

    I have a 6" Python I bought new in 1975 for, I think it was around $250.00. If memory serves me correctly active duty military could have bought a Python from the Armed Forces Exchange during the Vietnam War for around $100.00. Even though I am a true Dan Wesson 357 believer, the Python trumps it. The Python and the Model 29 44 magnum are, in my opinion, the two finest revolvers ever made.

    I think that Colt Python is the finest among all 357 magnum . It's so easy to make the difference with a 686, GP100 or else . But time is gone and S&W created Performance Center . In Europe, we have the famous MR73 which was made by Manurhin and made nowadays by "Chapuis Armes" . This gun is sensitive with dust . In france, when Colt discontinued the Python and Anaconda, it was a drama .

    Yes I do. I find the .357 to be more practical and precise. You can practice a lot with a .357 without any consequences, which is not the case with .44 mag full loads. Just read what happened to John Taffin. As for the Anaconda I would not dream to compare with the S&W, which is a fine weapon while the Anaconda is an investment casting piece of shit. I have several revolvers in different calibers which are fine for range shooting, but when I'm headed for the bush I take my 686.

    Is there a reason why Colt doesn't still make (or bring back) the Python or some of the other guns in the "Family of Snakes"? I know that the collectors of these guns wouldn't be happy! But there would be a high demand for them and I think that they would sell like crazy; especially the Python and the Anaconda, with them showing up in popular TV shows, movies and games these days. A whole lot of the new and younger shooters didn't even know what a Colt Python was until they saw Sheriff Rick Grimes using one on The Walking Dead"

      The guys who hand fitted them are long since retired and many are no longer with us. Real shame they couldn't pass this knowledge on to the next generation of gun maker(s). Then you have the simple economics of it for, lets be honest, not that much demand. How many of us can afford a new $4,000.00 revolver? It would be cool though.
