Learning how to re tie the straps was the best choice I made. I feel more connected with the Mitzvah.

These markers are basically regular markers with "kosher" labels on them...are they not? Do the markers have to be made with Kedushas tefillin in mind? I am leading to the question: can one use a regular Sharpie to blacken in light spots?

They have certification to ensure that only kosher ingredients are put in. As well the paint is also made with the intention to be used for the Tefillin. Which is Halachikally preferred.

Rabbi Kass, I once had a set of black-on-black retzous, and within the first year, the surface paint started to flake off, particularly on the retzua of the tefillin shel rosh. Is this common? Is there something in the dyeing of the leather throughout that makes the paint on the surface less likely to adhere? Thank you.

No, could be it was a bad run or could be sweat caused it to deteriorate quicker.

Is it okay to use the retzuos paint on the batim?

Technically yes. but it will not so look nice... because it's the wrong type of paint the paint for the Batim is Matte the paint for the Retzuos is a glossy. In general I don't recommend painting batim with the actual paint unless you're painting over the entire box because it will look uneven and blobby you should rather use the marker.

@@TheSoferCenter learned that lesson the hard way. Painted a couple corners and it doesn’t look great… think maybe I should paint the whole bayit?

don't take this the wrong way... but I think you'll most likely end up making it look worse... Right now if you only touched up a few spots it's simple for any sofer to clean it up. I'm afraid if you try to paint it more you'll touch the shins or paint will run into spots that it shouldn't. (Another reason why I recommend touching up the boxes with the marker, typically when we paint the entire box we take out the Parshios first) and will make it a much bigger job to "fix" I doubt it'll end up looking nicer... Really need to have the right paint, the right brush and experience. If the way it looks really bothers you contact me and we could try to figure out a way that maybe I can help you with it.

So looks like I’ll be investing in black on black retzuas when I need to replace the black and tan ones I have now. Live and learn, thanks Rabbi Kass!
