Really, Mick sounds more like an analyst than a coach. It’s amazing how much he knows about all the other teams. Very knowledgeable. How could he reel off the starting lineup for UK’s starting lineup from the 2102 NCAA Championship? How is that possible? Then he mentions 3 of Arkansas starting lineup from 1994. Unbelievable. I liked him at UC and was disappointed when he left but, how could he turn down the opportunity at UCLA. He was a great guest.
Day and Mayberry weren't on the 94 team but they were very good players. (I don't think Cronin was insinuating that they were on that team but just that they were great players under Richardson). I agree that he came off really well.
Colin's not wrong that CT doesn't typically have high level high school prospects, but it's really funny considering UConn's arguably most important player right now is a lifelong CT resident (Clingan).
Mick is definitely entertaining and analytical. Great guest. He also sounds like a coach who thinks UCLA is probably going to fire him. His invoking Digger Phelps saying that a coach only has a 9-10 year shelf life at a particular school these days was telling. I'm a fan and hope Mick is able to pull things back together again next season.
Most UCLA fans love Mick. This year was an aberration, the team was too young in a world where players will stay in college longer as a consequence of NIL. UCLA's fanbase is not Kentucky's. Contrary to popular opinion, we're quite reasonable. No serious-minded UCLA fan is demanding Cronin be fired. That ire was reserved for Chip Kelly, who was at best apathetic about his job. In contrast to our disgruntlement with Chip; we very much want Mick to stay, and there's been an upsurge in NIL funding to do so. Mick's a great coach. We know that. We just have to do our part in securing him the players he needs to win.
Uconn has picked up pretty much where they left off last year. They are going to beat everyone by double digits and have the game won by the half and cruise to a repeat.
Let me preface with this, in no way am I discrediting UConn’s run last year. BUT due to the insanity of last year’s tourney the highest seed they faced was a 3 seeded Gonzaga team that was 80th defensively. This year? The exact opposite, they will face teams who pass the eye test and light up metrics. Is UConn the favorite? Yes, don’t get it twisted. But they won’t blitz thru these last 4 games like they did last year.
@@Clutch67 I don't know. The Women are looking good this year and there is nothing more Uconn would want then to have both win again for the 3rd time. Uconn Men aren't always up there, but when they do get there, they are a train wreck for everyone else. The motivation factor is high, and that has as much to do with it as skill, and they have that also. They took it easy on NW in the second half. The game was already won. SD State isn't going to do any better than they did last year. You need 5 guys to get through that defense to beat Uconn and nobody has that.
Your 'sneaky good' team is Illinois. I still haven't found out what an Illini is lol. But they have had a pretty commanding presence in this tournament and absolutely no one is talking about them (really all season).
Not happening. Every champion since 2002 has finished ranked in the top 22 in KenPom for defensive efficiency and only 3 of them finished outside the top 15. Illinois defensive efficiency: #92
just like last year, could very easily see 3 of the 4 #1 seeds fall in the sweet 16. the only one i’m not admit about is Duke over Houston, don’t think Jon can outcoach Kelvin. but SDSU vs UConn this early is a recharged revenge game, Alabama can definitely clip UNC; the improved defense they had against GCU was impressive, just a bad shooting night is why it was close, and Gonzaga over Purdue; people doubted this Gonzaga team all year round and Mark Few might turn some heads because he got nothing to lose.
I don’t think Jon can out coach anyone BUT duke has more talent than Houston. Yes talent also is important so Houston doesn’t get out of this realm of impossibility of losing to duke.
We have seen Gonzaga play Purdue these last 2 years. They have been handled in both games and this one won’t be any different. They simply can’t match up well with Purdue.
Almost unrealistic task for both SDSU and Gonzaga. The Aztecs have to play their best and hope UConn plays below 50% of their capabilities. Gonzaga's will have to score nearly every possession and stop everyone but Edey. He's going to get his no matter what. It would be two great upsets!
Matt painter is a prime example of taking three star players developing them to fit his system, which intern makes the program better just ask Zack Evie case closed
Let's be honest here, there's only 1 team in the entire NCAA that can stop Zach Edey and it's the same team that knocked them out in the 1st Round last year; THE OFFICIATING TEAM. The NCAA has done a much better job this year at calling the correct fouls on and for Edey but all it takes is one rogue officiating crew who has some friends betting against Purdue for them and their season will be over premature just like last year.
Not sure about "the book," but it was widely known that Coach K was on the hot seat and Duke boosters were calling for his head around 82-83. But K's first crop of recruits (Dawkins, Bilas, Alarie, Henderson) matured and Duke improved steadily, and the rest is history. However, Cronin was talking about something different. He was talking about Coach K being on the hot seat toward the end of his career "for not winning a title during his last ten years." And that's not at all true, as Duke won the NCAA title in 2015 and also made the Elite 8 and were whiskers away from making the Final Four in both 2018 and 2019, before Duke made another Final Four in Coach K's last season, 2022. I can absolutely guarantee Mick that Coach K was never on the hot seat at the end of his career, and he retired on his own terms from Duke. Mick is clever and entertaining, but he's weaving a kind of false narrative that all of the older great coaches are retiring because they don't want to deal with NIL and the transfer portal. If that were true, then Few, Self, Izzo, Larranaga, Hamilton and every successful college coach over 65 would be gone by now.
The answer is he’s not very tall. Most of the show is done without guests. The added height in his desk makes him look taller. When the guest comes in though they sit on a couch, elevating a couch by a foot and a half is weird, so this is the result.

Lmao, the key to stop Purdue is NOT playing fast. Pressing doesn’t work as well this year either. To beat Purdue you have to drag the game down to a crawl and be super physical.
I really can’t stand Cronin. After UConn won in 2014, he said they didn’t deserve it. Now he’s saying there’s nobody good in Storrs? What about Tyler Olander or Donavon Clingan?
I get that Cronin statistcally has done alright since 2019 when he got the job, but talking about "you better win on the game day" when coming off a 16-17 record in very weak Pac-12 is laughable.
Wanna know what UConn has. DRIVE to Storrs. At the exit, they used to list all the national titles they've won. Now, they just give the number. Plus, yeah the mens team has had three coach's, but Auriemma will die there. Amd the men's and women's programs are super cross-supportive. Hurley didn't land in a vacuum. He landed some place where players WORK. And when they don't don't work, they hear about it. Not from their coaches, but their peers.
