Love the video. Virtually never get to see real time world class coach teaching next gen. Clearly your son has inherited an amazing engine. Fun to watch him overcome lack of experience with just youthful turbo engine. Meanwhile dad is chatting up the fast group like they're all sipping espressos at some cafe. Kudos to your son who clearly has a very high ceiling, talent-wise. What blows my mind is how effortlessly your own capabilities seem to make this "A Ride" a Zone 1/2 social outing. Keep the great insights and experiences coming, please.
Nice job Garrett! Swamis is no joke. There are a lot of good group rides in Southern California. I've been relegated to most of the old man versions now, such is life.
Well done Garrett.... Flipping awesome effort mate .... And well done to the old man , he ain't a half bad coach eh ..... Watching this brought back some great memories of when my son was riding pro here down under and because i drove the team bus they would allow me to tag along on the back of their rides until the pace went on and i got shot out the back. ..... Like you he was constantly out of the seat ..... Thanks for taking us along
Amazing he’s riding that well in such a short amount of training. He rides out of the saddle a lot like his dad. Didn’t see him in too much difficulty at all.
The weather and roads are incredible. Bit jealous here... :). I like Garrett's kit. Is this a standard issue that any of us can purchase or do have contacts from your racing days?
I'm following Garrett on strava. He is age 22 right? He needs year 2025 just to ride and train, build his base. Try a fee amateur races. Then year 2026 make a serious run for Zwift academy at age 23 or 24? Get the pro contract. Scouts are aleays watching for talent, so go for some big KOMs on strava, things like that. Win some amateur races and quickly cat up to pro 1-2 races. I'm rooting for him and I think he has the best coach for a dad. Hey Chris, sell a few motorbikes and get this kid a new Factor Ostro Vam or Scott addict or foil.
Wow, the kid has some serious talent to stay with Swamis without much experience! Was he playing other sports prior to this? Oh and why are half the guys bundled up like they are riding in the PNW in the middle of January?
Only other sport I've done is riding the dirt bike. The best coaching you can find did most of the work for this one 😁 It was 40 degrees on the coast when the ride started and there's not much time to take clothes off during the ride when it gets warmer 😬 Thanks for watching 🤘
Yes. Most of the top guys are around that 250-300 I would guess. When you start getting to the next level they are close to the 400 plus mile. But here on Swami’s these guys have jobs during the week and so cycling is second, third, or fourth on their important list. 👊👊
That's definitely from the dirt bike and being able to follow dad for a few hundred miles 😂 Amazing how much I learn from just sitting on his wheel and copying him
Youth, coaching, starting the ride at 138lbs, and 6 weeks to do nothing but ride and recover. I got just about every advantage a new rider could hope for! Thanks for watching! 🤟
What kind of group ride, even hammer ride, is rolling 3 abreast through residential areas? The state of cycling in 2025... You know chris, the thing is, youre gonna teach your son how to be a great rider but the mental of some of these folks out on the road today just ruins it. They don't know how to time a damn thing. They dont know how to read the cross winds, how to rotate properly. The group dynamics these days is a total joke.
Yeah watching them hammer through residential areas, blowing by like a hundred stop signs is cringy. I guess there just aren't any areas left to ride as San Diego has become so developed. I used to ride SDBC back in the 90s and it was quite chaotic too.
I think this looked very safe compared to how the Swamis ride can get. But what you are talking about is the nature of ALL fast group rides in SoCal and has been for. Lots of very fit and competitive people going into self-survival mode, and not everyone who is fast and can hang in those rides has good bike handling skills, an understanding of how to ride in a group and/or are not thinking through a lens of consideration or safety of others. Not slamming anyone, that’s just the way it is……Dangerous, but a great training tool. Be safe out there everyone!!!🫶
@@ChrisHornerCyclingdisagree. You’ve ridden enough around the world to know that’s not the case, too. Cycling in Florida for many years, a well organized paceline thwarting the wind was always the default setting (provided you had the power to rotate). Then gloves off for the sprints.

Thanks. For the comments. It was a fun day for me to finally get to ride Swami’s with my boy. 👊👊
Proud father, and champion! All American great! Thanks Chris!
Im struggling to appreciate the quality of cycling from this angle but definitely appreciating Garrett's camera and editing skills.
Congratulations Garrett! 🎉 🦸♂️
Thanks 🤘
Nice job Garrett! Swamis is no joke. There are a lot of good group rides in Southern California. I've been relegated to most of the old man versions now, such is life.
I was doing the Afib ride for the first two weekends I was down there while building some fitness. 👊👊
Nicely done, to both son and (mentoring) Dad.
👊👊
👊😁
Great video. Would Garrett consider a local club race sometime in the future? ‘Couch to Hero to Racer’. That would make another great story. 💪🚴♀️
"Sit down!" 😆
😂👊

you and Garrett alway produce interesting and entertaining vids, thanks
well done Garret, you look smooth on the bike a chip off the old block as they say.
👊👊
✌😃
Whoever fitted Garret did a good job. If he decides to sell those Zipps, let me know.
@ChrisHornerCycling can you do a video on bike fitting?
Well done Garret, hard work always pays off 👍🏾
Great to have a world-class dad for a coach but coaching only goes so far. From zero to hero... well done
👊👊
Coaching does go pretty far 😁
Thanks for watching!
cycling is a good friend.
👊👊
Nice work pops and son!
👊👊
Amazing he’s riding that well in such a short amount of training. He rides out of the saddle a lot like his dad. Didn’t see him in too much difficulty at all.
I definitely felt in difficulty quite a bit 😂 Got better as the day went on though!
Great job Garrett!!
👊👊
Thanks😁
That's insane Garret. Nice!
👊👊
Quite happy with how the day went 😁
Glad to see you got Garrett on rim brakes
We went for economy. 👊👊
Hi Chris ,loved the video but would have liked to have seen some kind of speed and gradient
Impressive, DNA or not that’s some nice work there
👊👊
I think coaching took me further than anything else! Thanks for watching👊
go fam
👊👊👊👊👊👊
He's like you, stands a lot
Ring puckering stats.....good lad ✌️
👊👊
Thanks, fellas!! Great to be able to “do” the Swami’s ride again without all of the pain🤣🙏
😂👊
Happy to help 😂
Congrats Garrett 👊🚴🦾
👊👊
Thanks!🥳
hey Chris, any chance those cycling gods can show up at my next race? 🤣
How were you able to train your son to stand continously through the climbs?
Beginning of San Elijo looks /very/ different from 90's Swami's rides.
Right. I miss the old course. 🥲👊
The weather and roads are incredible. Bit jealous here... :). I like Garrett's kit. Is this a standard issue that any of us can purchase or do have contacts from your racing days?
We have the foundation kits available online. 👊👊
Great job chris your son's pro already. I'm going to San Diego in 2 weeks. I love riding my bike there.❤👊👊💪🚲🚲
Enjoy the sunshine 👊👊
Having been on my retired Dad's wheel, I wouldn't say pro 😂 Thanks for watching 👊

Epic, Epic day :)
👊👊
Most fun I've had on 2 wheels 🤘

It makes our Montrose ride look beginner. Thurlow at 65 still strong big diesel.
So these guys are riding 300-400 miles a week ?~

I'm doing 250-350 miles a week
I'm sitting in freezing ass Michigan watching this wishing it was road season already. I'm so sick of the trainer and mu fat bike 🤣
P.S. he looks great here in the group.
👍
Matt 👍. Good to see ya 🏆👊👊👊👊👊👊👊👊👊👊👊
Woohoo
Woohoo. Podium 👊👊👊👊👊👊👊👊
Almost as impressive as his fitness is his bike handling. All the dirt biking I guess and it helps to ride with experienced riders.
Right. I wondered before Garrett did his first group ride but then I thought, we have been at the moto track for years now, so he should be ok. 😂👊
That's definitely from the dirt bike and being able to follow dad for a few hundred miles 😂
Amazing how much I learn from just sitting on his wheel and copying him
Love what Garrett is doing...but you look and sound like you could be still riding pro...🏴🇺🇲👍.
Ah the advantages of youth!
Got love it. ❤️👊
Youth, coaching, starting the ride at 138lbs, and 6 weeks to do nothing but ride and recover. I got just about every advantage a new rider could hope for!
Thanks for watching! 🤟
That road looks way to busy! 😳....I'm getting too old!!
Yep. Every year more and more. 😳😬
Great job. Faster and stronger
👊👊💪
Great job dad/coach. I also like how you took off different layers so expertly on the downhills and so quickly.
No time to mess around. 👊👊
❤Awesome Garrett. Nice to have a dad as a coach and mentor 😊
👊👊
Wouldn't enjoy the bike without him!
Thanks for watching 🤟😁

No fast group ride is ever single file unless the speed forces it to be. 👍
