@@SirHairless Nor do I, just snippets on TH-cam. But I strongly recommend watching Richard Goodall's audition, where he get the golden buzzer (it's in the title, so that's not a spoiler) on the AGT channel, as it has his story too, which is heartwarming. Just to tantalize you a bit, I'll just say this: this simple, humble 55 year old man, got a standing ovation before he finished the second verse.💙

@@DravenGal Sounds good! Do you know if it's a different arrangement of whichever song he performs by any chance, or just a direct cover over the regular backing track?

    • @DravenGal
      @DravenGal หลายเดือนก่อน

@@SirHairless He uses a backing track, but his cover is definitely NOT "just a cover," LOL! Honestly, it's one of the best covers I've ever heard. And I'm a Voiceplaya! They actually do a cover of "Don't Stop Believing'" too, which is my favorite group cover, but this man is in a class by himself! (There's a pun there, you'll get it if you watch the audition!)🤣
On a more serious note, I used to be a huge fan of Glee, and this song has made me sad for years because it made me think of Cory Monteith's death. But now, I associate it with hope. For which I will be forever grateful.💙💙

Yes! Geoff's story arc feels like, I don't wanna fall in love. But I have, and I feel kinda doomed. In the last third of the song, when he adds harmony including the lovely head voice, it's like he has a moment's hope that the love story might work out; then at the end he slumps at the piano, back to the deep bass and self-doubt.

Did I want the 4th octave part sooner? Expected would be a better word, I think. But when he fulfills seems to feel right in the song. It works with the sad-bordering-on-despair sentiment he seems to be presenting. Like a final cry before resignation to despair (“no nobody loves no one.”)
I also like the uncertainty of how many parts are joining his lead line in the second verse/chorus. It feels like the voices in one’s head commiserating, heard but indistinct.
**Edit to add: Geoff’s “n” tags in front of some words is, according to The Charismatic Voice, a method of anchoring onto a note typical for some basses. You’ll hear it many times in both his solo work and in some VP videos where his bass is exposed.
Another great analysis! Keep them coming!😊

I don't think I'd want to hear the high part sooner. Geoff used the octaves as a way to build up the songs energy. started super low energy in his bass range, increased a bit with his baritone, then a big energy surge up to his tenor and then back down for a slow fade out in bass. a perfect "wave" of energy building in a song.

Geoff has said that he has to bring something different to song. If it is too close to the original, it is a karaoke version, not a cover. Delaying the high section to near the end differentiates it further from the original and allows a gentle build to the climax. It certainly allows a much bigger range of emotions to be expressed.

Thank you, Sir Hairless again, for explaining the musical structure here - and thanks to Juliana, too, for choosing this one!
About the high octave part - I heard a few reactors wishing it to come earlier, one even disliked Geoff's version "because this song isn't meant to be sung so deep" 🙃
My guess: It has to do with expectations we have, when listening to a song. This one is so iconic from Chris Isaak, everybody knows the high head voice parts - and Geoff denies giving them to us. At first.🤣So if you stand the eeriness and the low depth, you are rewarded with what you wanted from the beginning: The high vocal part.
I can imagine, that someone not knowing the original song, has a completely different view to this version without expecting a high part or just recognizing it as a build-up from low to high.
I like this version, because of Geoff's voice. It feels like a hypnosis, it mesmerizes me even after double-digit listens.☺

Great analysis!! And very interesting thumbnail!! I love how Geoff took his time to slowly move to the climax part. I think it suits the feelings and emotions that he wants to create for this version really well. And at the end he silently sitting there and looking away, just makes me feel grief/loss. People might feel differently for music choice (and with total valid reasons), but I enjoy the vision that Geoff created for this song that made me get complete different emotions from the original.

🦍🦍🦍 ..Ciao Sir Hairless . once again you & I agree on the word that stands out , here it is gradual. I am very glad you made it to this cover. Geoff certainly makes this his own , and he displays nice , calm , relaxing piano skills. You will soon discover his guitar and harmonica talents on your journey. I really enjoy his talent to stay extremely low in a song ... and then rise when he feels like it. His higher voice sounded great here , but his lows really told the story. I think I would like to see you playing piano alongside of this video. You would definitely make different choices than Geoff, as his were so subtle. The extra sounds he added were so perfect. Excellent by him and by you .. thank you for bringing the expert knowledge once again ! 🌔🌕🌖

Thank you to the person who requested it!
    I cried ):
I like his low tone far better than his high (I think I heard you say on a video before that you like his higher register better than the catacombs haha), don't get me wrong, I LOVE his high as well, but prefer the low. This song had everything, and sometimes... I rather have less sound, when it's a voice like him, I feel like I don't want other stuff interfering cause his voice is insane and has so much body, I love it. (I am unsure if I like it more than Diana's cause hers is insane), I love them equally I would say. I don't like the original.

It's only in the last year that Geoff has made videos that did not show his harmonizers on screen. As with this one, it is for artistic affect. In another piece, he said that he was going for the sound of a grizzly bear singing a lullaby. I was unfamiliar with the song, so had to look at it after. Go figure, I like Geoff's better. That may be because I had no connection with the original.
He said recently that he may have made a mistake with the white background, his physically dark pieces do better. I think the stark white definitely showed the loneliness.

Geoff adds so much sadness and resignation in this beautiful arrangement that transformed the somewhat sensual atmosphere of the original song into a sort of aching confession from a poor purring being... It’s a very introspective/entrancing performance and I imagine this feeling could be lost if that final part with higher vocals had been introduced sooner in the song, but I’m not sure either... Thank you for another insightful analysis! To anyone familiar with the original, I think holding off on flipping up into head voice built up greater anticipation, while keeping in the bassment longer helped tell the story of the song better. I feel the despair and resignation here much more than in the original.
I second requests to do a more lighthearted or theatrical Geoff video next -- like Ghost Riders in the Sky, Jack's Lament, or (my favorite) Way Down. It was Elvis Presley's last song to hit #1, and a lot of people have forgotten about it. In Way Down, Geoff covers Elvis and JD Sumner, and we get to see a side of Geoff we rarely see. I LOVE that he kept the song way down in the depths for the vast majority of the song... almost like a dreamy lullaby... and then catapults us as the listener up into the clouds... it makes those gorgeous high notes hit that much harder when he finally unleashes them upon us. I've loved this song since it released 35 years ago (omg I'm getting old) and had never heard a cover that did it for me... but now, incredibly (but not surprisingly) I prefer Geoff's interpretation of this over the original.
The original will always hold a place in my heart, but whatever the magic Geoff weaves into his music actually is... it's pretty damn powerful stuff because I've lost track of how many arrangements of his have knocked the original into 2nd place. It's the same thing with VoicePlay. So many covers they've done have turned songs that were just "meh." for me, into songs that get constant replays in my music library.
I feel so lucky to be alive right now in this moment when VoicePlay are contemporary artists to me & I, as a Patron, am actively helping them to create these amazing works of art that they then share with the entire world, pretty much *every single month*!!!

While the song isn't one of my favorites, I do enjoy Geoff's video because of the amount of time the camera spends showing his hands playing the piano. For whatever reason, watching Geoff play the piano is just about the most relaxing, calming thing I've experienced in a long time - I think if he ever put out a 1-hour video of that, I'd probably end up in a coma!
FYI - the studio where this was shot was a rental. The BTS for the video shows the "crew" (Geoff and his wife Kathy) arriving with the piano in a trailer attached to their vehicle. But because of parking, they had to lug the piano and all of their recording and lighting equipment a couple of blocks to get it to the studio - and of course, make the reverse trip after the shoot was done. That was quite a process for just two people, especially since Kathy is a foot shorter than Geoff - who isn't nearly as tall as he always seems to be; when I first saw him, I thought he was about 6'3", but he's only 5'11" - barely above average height!

I decided to make a commitment to viewing some of your other reactions to other artists to expand my musical exposure. I know I’ll run into things I may not be particularly fond of but I’ll do my best to hang in until the end to hear your complete reaction, it may cause me to have an appreciation that may have been absent without it. I can say in this opening by Geoff that the deep rumble of his bass line was so resonant I had trouble understanding the lyrics and I’m totally unfamiliar with the song. It seems the deeper we sing the more critical the need for consonants for shaping words although I’m not sure it would have mattered in this instance. Perhaps this is a shortcoming of myself since I didn’t see any other commenters noting the same thing? I think I’m going to have to find and read the lyrics before I can appropriately comment on it……

Mr. Yodle Man!! Lol... I know I won’t please a lot of people but I’m really not crazy about the cavernous basse register. It’s gravely, not smooth to my ears. Too much for me. I find that singers who have remarkable voices and are capable of unique sounds (mega low, whistle tone, overtones...) often overuse those effects. I really prefer his voice two octaves higher. And his high range is absolutely gorgeous. It’s my favorite part. Thank you for another great analysis. 🤗

I always liked the song, and Chris Isaac sang it beautifully! Generally, I find any song by Geoff beyond awesome, but Diana Ankudinova's version apparently lives for free in my head now.
There is one and a half thing about Geoff's singing that bothers me, and they seem related: the way country singers tend to slide onto notes way too much, and not actually ending up on the correct note. He is, and should be, commended for really expanding his bass to the bassest, so it is apparent why he would allow himself that beginning. But it still makes me feel physically ill to hear all those off key notes!
It was a relief to have him raise an octave (or two?) after that first verse, but the dissonance keeps returning, so it is not likely that I will be able toisten to this song again. Such a shame, but at least he is not like Leonard Cohen, who hits me with a gut punch every time I hear his voice! I will be able to enjoy other songs by our beloved Mr. Castellucci.

Thanks for the comment! Geoff doesn't really sing off-key notes in this (as in he always ends up on the correct notes) in the form you're mentioning, which I believe is out-of-tune, so I'm not quite sure which notes you're referring to 🤔 It's a sound performance overall from a musical theory perspective, so perhaps it's just his stylistic choices that you don't agree with? Or the slides themselves as slides cover all possible notes between points A and B?

I don't think so. Hard to tell with the harmony parts because the sound is overall quite synthetic, but the solo parts I don't think are

Some other reactors have noted places in other videos where it’s fairly certain, but either it’s used sparingly and/or he’s already close enough it’s impossible to tell.

I going out on limb to say that this is Angelina Jordan’s arrangement. She is sitting by herself at the piano and puts even more pathos into it. Check her out. Her age at the time? 14-15.

What? This was absolutely arranged by Geoff and is actually quite different than Angelina’s version.

I've not yet heard Angelina Jordan so can't comment myself, but I will trust @thisismetoday7423's response ^
