  • I add 2x2 and 4x4 external antennas to the Verizon 5G Home Internet, the Arcadyan ARC-XCI55AX to see how the signal and speed improves. I tell you which of the 8 antenna ports on the gateway proved to be the best/fastest for each antenna and just how much it may help your signal and speeds. This helps you get better 4G LTE and 5G UWB (aka C-band) signal. These antennas can be put in the attic or outdoors for the best reception. Note I test the stock gateway and the antennas at nearly the same location/height, the difference in signal/speed would likely be greater if your gateway was say on the ground level and antennas outside at the roof level. To correct a typo on antenna arrangement in the video --- Gateway to Waveform 4x4: J1 to 3, J3 to 4, J4 to 1, J5 to 2. See below for discounts and parts for external antennas.

Hey Nate: Just finished watching the video this morning. Very good video and very informative as always. Thanks for letting me know that it was available. I have a Waveform 2x2 mimo that I think I will try first, but since I currently have the ASK verizon cube I'll have to see about getting another line in order to get the ARC. I'll let you know how everything goes. Thanks for all your helpful information.

I've been watching your videos on the 5G Home Internet services/equipment/antennas off and on throughout the day -- Thank you for sharing all the information and time that you spent on this with us! I need to have a viable backup to my COMCAST cable service, and you've made this look very approachable. I ordered the Verizon 5G Home Internet a couple hours ago. I am running a pfSense firewall and the documentation shows that it has a great deal of support for multi-WAN setups. I'm going to give that a try once I have the Verizon 5G up. Thank you again. Awesome work. 👍 QUESTION: Around the 7m30s mark on this video you have antenna connection '1' appearing twice for the 4X4 MIMO -- Where did you connect '3'?

Hi Nate. I hope you're well. I ordered Verizon 5G Home Internet on-line. They sent me an ASC gateway which I received 2 days ago. Spoke with a VZW tech because I was having trouble activating the ASK. She fixed in just a couple minutes. She told me that they are only sending-out ASC for on-line orders. She said that ARC gateways can be found in some stores. I asked and she told me where a couple were located at a store in my area. My interaction with the tech was very positive; lots of good information. I went the store and was able to setup new service and they sent me home with an ARC. I made sure to ask if they had ARCs in-stock before starting the order. Thank you for all your help. Next step: order a MIMO antenna. Cheers!

I have had the Verizon gateway a few months now. My house is built inside of a metal building. My only windows face the south with Cell towers along the interstate north of me. Basically a Faraday cage. I could not get any connection at all with the gateway inside the house. I finally found a spot in my shop where it would connect with the doors closed.
One day I was experiencing lots of buffering and ran a speed test. It was about 9mbs. After watching videos of yours about this box, I knew the antennas were all over the box. I went to the shop and rotated the box 1/4 of a turn and re ran the speed test. This time I was averaging 89mbs download. Good enough. If I set the box on a chair about a foot outside the back door the speed jumps to just shy of 300. Perhaps an outdoor enclosure made of plastic or an outdoor antenna will be in my future.

Hi! Great videos on your channel here Nater Tater! When installing the 2x2 MIMO antenna, you used J5 & J6. Waveform seems to recommend J1 & J3. Did you find your combo to be better for 2x2, or was that just because the 4x4 had J1 & J3 occupied in this test setup?

Nate, thanks for your wealth of knowledge. Been watching your videos for the last couple of days trying what to do about our TMobile home internet. We don't really have the means to get on our roof (it's a geodesic dome ;-) do you think mounting an external antenna at ground level would be worthwhile? My other thought would be to have my handyman mount an omni directional antenna on an old tv antenna tower we have that's well above the roof line. Thanks!

I’m wondering what is the best unit in your experience for upload speeds? I have good coverage from all providers where I am in a big city. I’d rather just go with gig speeds from cable but I stupidly signed a lease to a new apartment unaware they don’t even have cable internet available… never in my life have I seen that didn’t even think to check. I guess they are updating to fiber soon but I like to stream to twitch tv. Are these things capable of streaming to twitch? If I also hooked up an antenna system.

Hey Nate, just swapped out my ASK unit for an ARC. Would adding external antennas right at the cube improve speeds? Something like 9dBI 38 cm long antennas like you would add to a router that only has internal antennas? I currently get -105 or so 5G signal strength. In the middle of the night I might get 250 Mbps or better download, during the day it will average under 100 Mbps. Upload is less time of day dependent, with 20 Mbps a good number, down to 10 Mbps, average around 15 Mbps.

    • @NaterTater

I have the simple mobile version of this device. Seemed like a perfect fix for my slow dsl issues.
Thanks to this video I took it apart and added external antennas.
    A 2x2 and a 4x4 from waveform.
If signal was a Pie chart showing the towers in my area "cells" my part if the pie is empty.
So my signal can work but 32mbs is the highest I can get.
    All antennas are wave form.
I have a we boost that does a great job boosting signal.
I connected it to a port on the router. My signal went from -110 to a -42 for 4g. No 5g.
Any idea how you can have such a good signal and still a slower speed?
If I take it up town and drive around I get 100mbs down and 14 up and it's at -98
I was hoping the -42 would translate to a higher speed.

Very informative! So theoretically if I got an "SMA Cable Splitter" and attached all U.FL cables to one cable that wouldn't work? also, what if I only attach one U.FL to the line and try to find the fastest one...Is there a way to prioritize the best input that you know of?

    • @NaterTater

A splitter wont work. MIMO need different antenna arrays tuned for cross polarization. You really want a 4x4 MIMO (4 cables) but 2x2 can suffice.

(Do you have a VSWR meter?) I also noticed your cable is very long. Is this high quality cable or something cheap? (Are these LMR-400 cables?) Even if they are high quality, I'd use shorter cables to improve your signal strength.

Speed and latency will vary by user. What is true for all users is the speed throttles Verizon has of 100/15mbps and 300/20mbps depending on regular or plus 5G plans. If you are getting less than that the antenna will help.

    Hello Nate.
Because T-Mobile was so bad and almost no support I left them. And there is no other ISP in this area I live. With that being said I am keeping the tablet plan for the home phone line link device. But the BIG NEWS is that I went with STARLINK and been using it for about a week now. I am in a area that is not completely covered for now but it is a lot better than T-Mobile. Yes it is quite pricey @ $135.00 a month for the RV package. Plus about $600.00 for the gateway and dish. BUT my speeds are fantastically fast with at times with over 400Mbs down and about 14-18Mbs upload and ping about 20-40ms.
I am still coming here to watch you and your shenanigans. In witch I enjoy very much by the way. I just wanted to let you know why I haven't posted for a while. I will like I said be back with your new videos because have you on alerts. Take care my TH-cam friend.... Dave

Just set mine up, i've got TMHI and a 4x4 waveform already but TM hasn't moved my service address properly (even though I did everything they told me to) so i'm worried i'll get booted by them when they geofence next month. Low and behold verizon was available to me now so picked it up. I'm a good ways from the tower with some trees, -112 signal before the antennae, -100 flat afterwards. Wish I could see the rest of the signal metrics but they don't let you it seems. Speeds went from low 200s to 310mps down and biggest improvement in the upload of 3-4mbps up to 10-20mbps with the antennae (a far cry from the 40-60 up I get on TMHI though). Now i'm just waiting to see if they deprioritize the speeds at night. Last 2 nights without the waveform speeds would drop from 200 daytime down to 10-20 down during peak, if that still happens even with the waveform verizon must have serious throttling/prioritization issues. We'll see how that all goes. One nice upside of the verizon unit is it has proper routing control/bridge mode which the tmobile doesn't.

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@NaterTater Little update if you were curious (which you're probably not). T-mobile actually has a "legacy" internal system for older customers where my address wasn't up to date, but in the newer systems it was, they were able to update it so no risk of being kicked off via geofencing. So now I actually just get to chose t-mobile for $50/month or verizon for $70/month. TMHI price locked for life, Verizon just for a few years. Over the past few days the verizon with waveform in all offpeak is maxed out at 300/20 almost all the time but during peak drops to the 100-200/15 range. Verizon will also every few days drop off 5g completely until it's rebooted. I'd say on average the verizon is beating tmobile in speeds and ping but as the service expands around here who knows how long that'll last. Generally both are running super well so probably no good reason to pay the extra $20/month though I do really like verizon's hardware a lot more with the arc-cube. I'll track speed tests for verizon for a full week then go back to TMHI and do the same and compare.

I'm in the same situation as you. Verizon signal in my area but 5G home not available for my address. I put in a service address where I knew there was UWB but had it shipped to my home. It does work but I don't have UWB at my home so my speeds are usually 50-70 down and 4-8 up. It's been fast enough to run my entire home with lots of devices and multiple people streaming regularly.

Verizon needs to work on a new one with external antennas that come with the device. It makes sense or a device that we can get for free that can boost cell signal for both 4G and 5G. Kind of like the Sprint Magic Box back in the day. I kind of miss those days. But when 5G rolled out Carriers discontinued them. But the main issue I hear from Verizon Customer is poor Service. According to Verizon they only guarantee outdoor signal. Then you have TMO that has low and mid-band frequencies that can penetrate through walls very well. I do believe Verizon's main issue is there more focused on high frequencies and I don't think they have the low in mid bands as much as much as TMO has and this is for a lot of people causeing issues especially the ones that live out in the country and might be more than one mile from the tower. In my case I have line of sight of one of the Verizon towers that serves my local area here in Michigan out in the country and I am 1 mile but it seems like anything farther than that and you start losing your cell phone bars.

In order to duplicate your experiment, one needs information about the antenna cables - how long are they and what is their signal loss per foot to/from the antennas. Signal attenuation within the antenna cable can be difficult. Usually a rule of thumb is the shorter the antenna cable, the stronger the signal is into the gateway from the antenna. Can't tell from the video how long the antenna cables are and what the attenuation per foot is at 3.8 GHz.

It has 30ft of LMR-240 equivalent cabling which per www.qsl.net/co8tw/Coax_Calculator.htm shows close to a 5dB loss for 3.8 Ghz. Certainly not insignificant and illustrates how placement can still outweigh that heavy loss.

Do you happen to know what connectors does only C-band 5G?
To make it simple, I get great 4G signal, but OK to poor 5G signal.
Here is the long info. I am getting -65 to -73 with the 4G side of things, but -103 to -112 with 5G in my attic space, and the speeds are great too, but I do not want to leave the device in my attic space since it gets hot there. I found a space that is not in the attic, but the 5G signal is worse. On the shelf, I can get -76 to -83 with the 4G, but -115 to nothing on 5G. The speeds is about 1/2 to 1/4 less compared to the attic space.
I can not use a window like the manual says since the low e storm windows is blocking the signal for me at least. The signal strength is about the same as the windows, but for 4G is a little worse.
Come to find out, Verizon only has only one C-Band 5G tower in my area so far that I can connect to easily which is around one mile away. I know I have nationwide 5G since my phone connects to it here, but come to find out Verizon is using two different styles of 5G here. Come to find out, the ARC cube does not connect to the one type of 5G.
The 4G signals is from a small cell that is one block away from me which is the same tower that my phone gets nationwide 5G from too.
So I am thinking that I need mod the device for 5G only. So I need to figure out if it is possible too before I order some hardware for this modding.

A few hours ago, I finally found a FCC document that talks about the C-band 5G antennas. Somehow I overlooked it three times somehow because I looked that the documents many times.

10:50 The video was going fine until this cringe moment. Don't connect/disconnect antennas while the equipment is on! You'll blow out your LNA and PA!
