Fred Vincey is one of the only characters in Middlemarch I like :D Him and Mary, and no one else! I love Diggery Venn and Mr Thornton too. And please make a Rochester video 😊
Couldn't agree more about Sydney Carton. My favourite male character of all time, and 90% of the reason A Tale of Two Cities is my favourite book. I agree with a lot of your other picks as well, especially Joe and Rochester. I would add Roger Hamley from Wives and Daughters, and Arthur Clennam from Little Dorrit.
I would watch a Rochester video! Sydney Carton, Peggoty's father and David's other friend who plays a big role at the end, but can't remember his name. John Thornton and Rochester are on my list as well.
Oh I love so many of these male characters.. I love joe in great expectations so much, obviously mr Rochester and heathcliff as the baddies but ones that are so well written. I would love a Rochester video 😊❤️
You are so right about Thornton. Thanks for your thoughtful comments paired with the laugh about the screen choice for actor. And Diggory--definitely! And I agree with what you say about Gab. Oak, too. I am on the Farmer Boldwood and Joe teams, as well. What wonderful characters. On the other hand, I am not (at least not yet) with you on Fred Vincy... (Definitely yes on a Rochester video, Jennifer!)
John Thornton is wonderful, I totally agree with everything you said about him! I would love to see a video about Mr Rochester. He is such a fascinating character who can be viewed in so many ways so I would love to hear more of your thoughts on him 😊
Ohh John Thornton! He is a very new discovery for me, I have read it in the summer, and he skyrocketed to my favourite male character of all time :D And Margaret Hale is a fantastic female lead as well. I just love them, and North and South as well.
I have yet to discover some of the characters you mention but oh yes John Thornton is one of the best. I'm on the Gabriel Oak team who is I think the most perfect Victorian male character I've encountered so far. I would love an entire video on Rochester (I know he's not that great as a person but I just love his relationship with Jane and somehow I manage to find excuses for him). I also love Allan Woodcourt from Bleak House and one the greatest characters I've met in Victorian novels is Anthony Trollope's Mr Slope from Barchester Towers.
I'm excited to read more from Trollope because I've heard so many wonderful things about his characters. I can't wait to get further into Bleak House and discover all of the great characters there.
I would love to hear your thoughts on Jane Eyre, especially Rochester, please make a video about it. And I am one hundred percent in agreement with you that without Joe, Pip wouldn't be so human. And yes, I also hate some of his attitudes, but I think the construction of his character is fantastic.
Love your video! I have yet to discover some of these characters, you’ve given me something to look forward to with each of the books I haven’t yet read. Tale of Two Cities was my fist Dickens novel and somehow I now own four copies so I know I loved it but I’m also due for a reread. I’m currently reading Great Expectations for Victober. I just finished a reread of Jane Eyre last month, love Mr. Rochester.
Your content is so great!! And of course, my love of this video has NO basis in the fact that you started with John Thornton, a man who knows how to share his feelings. 👀
I agree about Heathcliff! He is angry but we can sympathize with him and Cathy! Lol Walter is the sweetest. I love how respectful he is towards everyone! Rochester is my main Bae 😅 I know, and I felt how much he loved Jane so I don’t care about his mistakes! I take his attitude as a joking matter towards Jane when ppl think he is being “mean” or “rude”. As a Mexican American we do use the phrase, “echando mosca” it’s when a person who likes you and you know, does not necessarily tell you beautiful things but rather weird funny things to make you laugh or make you angry because they love to see all sides before entering a relationship. In a way I alway told my husband he reminded me of Rochester 🥰 without the woman in the attic of course 😂😂
Yes to Fred Vincy! He goes on such a journey as a character and I love that about him. He's so flawed but willing to be better. I would love a Rochester video! Pip being rude to Joe is the cringiest part of Great Expectations.
I'm reading North & South right now and, having already seen the BBC miniseries with glorious Richard, I'm ready to fall in love with actual John Thornton and it's already happening aaaaaah 😂🤩😍💔
I love Henry Wotton and Basil Hallward from The Picture of Dorian Gray!! (I just really really love tpodg and everything Wilde has touched). also would looooove a Rochester video, I think about him all the time. Especially the scene where he dresses up as an old woman (although the fortune teller is a racial stereotype of romani people)
I really need to reread Dorian Gray because I know I loved it but it feels like now I can barely remember anything! And yes, that's probably my favorite scene in Jane Eyre--that's when I knew something was up with him. There's a lot of unfortunate racist things in Jane Eyre that make it hard to love, imo.
Wuthering Heights subverted my expectation. The turn it takes about halfway through the novel surprised 15-year-old me. I picked it because of its pretty cover and I expected it to be a love story. Oh boy! It managed to make me care about unlikable people. Both Heathcliff and Catherine are amazing! I also liked Magwitch and Joe more than Pip. Rochester was a disappointment, at times. I laughed pretty hard at the scene with the fortune teller and his first conversation with Jane was so intriguing! I'm currently reading North and South and I can't wait to see the adaptation!
Rochester is for sure one of the most interesting characters in Victorian literature if for no other reason that he’s the most controversial and most discussed of them all!
I absolutely agree with you about Heathcliff, Rochester and Thornton. I think with the Cathy/Heathcliff thing for me is yes they are a lot alike and Heathcliff could be said to do even worse things than Cathy but I have more sympathy for Heathcliff as he comes across as a downtrodden badly treated person, where as Cathy is that way because she is spoilt. I think it’s the innate feeling of wanting to justify a persons bad behaviour l, find the root cause of it and with Heathcliff you get some of that and Cathy not.
Giles Winterbourne in “The Woodlanders” is a kind and tragic character. A bit comparable to Sydney Carlton in the altruistic path he chooses to follow.
Your taste was impeccable to me until you preferred Francis I treat every woman in my life like trash Troy to Gabriel the most loyal Oak. Especially when we consider that Oak could have tried to manipulate Bathsheba so many times during the narrative in his favor and he never did. On the contrary, in many moments when she asks for some advice, he gives it at the expense of his own happiness. Of the three, he's the only guy who sees her as a human being and not a fetish.
Fred Vincey is one of the only characters in Middlemarch I like :D Him and Mary, and no one else! I love Diggery Venn and Mr Thornton too. And please make a Rochester video 😊

Hearing about Arthur Clennam makes me want to pick up Little Dorrit very soon!
I would watch a Rochester video! Sydney Carton, Peggoty's father and David's other friend who plays a big role at the end, but can't remember his name. John Thornton and Rochester are on my list as well.

Me too I second a Rochester video!
I'm so glad to know other people love Joe!
@@jenniferbrooks he is one of my favourite male characters in classics 😊
YAY I am so so pleased that Joe from Great Expectations made this list! Such a wonderful character! Fantastic video, very interesting 😀👍🏻
Thank you!! I'm glad to know someone else loves Joe as much as I do!
I would definitely love a Rochester video !!!! Yes please :)
You are so right about Thornton. Thanks for your thoughtful comments paired with the laugh about the screen choice for actor. And Diggory--definitely! And I agree with what you say about Gab. I think you will come to love Fred Vincy by the end, Hannah! LOL.
@@jenniferbrooks I still have a ways to go, but yes, you are right: I am starting to come around...
John Thornton is wonderful, I totally agree with everything you said about him! I would love to see a video about Mr Rochester. He is such a fascinating character who can be viewed in so many ways so I would love to hear more of your thoughts on him 😊
Thank you! I am brainstorming thoughts on that video now.
John Thornton is my favourite Victorian male character too. He's such a good character! I would love to see that video on Rochester :)
Meghan the Story Girl he’s so swoony! 😍
Ohh John Thornton! He is a very new discovery for me, I have read it in the summer, and he skyrocketed to my favourite male character of all time :D And Margaret Hale is a fantastic female lead as well. I just love them, and North and South as well.
A video about Rochester would be wonderful. ı am about to finish Great Expectations and I agree with you about Joe and Pip.
How don’t you have more followers?! I’m loving your videos. Btw, could you please do a bookshelf tour?
I am loving your Victober content! Thank you so much for sharing with us xx
Thank you!

Yes Rochester video

I agree with you on everything! There are things I really dislike about Rochester but he feels very real.
Love your video! I have yet to discover some of these characters, you’ve given me something to look forward to with each of the books I haven’t yet read. Yes, he is so open about his feelings! It's refreshing!
I love Victorian Literature! Heathcliff is definitely top of the top! Very good video! :) I subscribed to you 😊☺️
Thank you! I love Heathcliff too.
I agree about Heathcliff! He is angry but we can sympathize with him and Cathy! Lol

I loved hearing your thoughts on Rochester! That is fascinating and I think that phrase definitely sums him up!
Yes to Fred Vincy! He goes on such a journey as a character and I love that about him. He's so flawed but willing to be better.
I would love a Rochester video!
Pip being rude to Joe is the cringiest part of Great Expectations.
Yes! I knew you would understand about Fred Vincy!
I'm reading North & South right now and, having already seen the BBC miniseries with glorious Richard, I'm ready to fall in love with actual John Thornton and it's already happening aaaaaah 😂🤩😍💔
YES!! I can't wait to hear how you feel about the book when you've finished it!
Did you just drop a reference to 'She's Just Not That Into You' for Margaret Hale??? 😂
I love Henry Wotton and Basil Hallward from The Picture of Dorian Gray!! Yes! Nothing is ever clear with people's feelings on Rochester!
I absolutely agree with you about Heathcliff, Rochester and Thornton. I think it’s the innate feeling of wanting to justify a persons bad behaviour l, find the root cause of it and with Heathcliff you get some of that and Cathy not.
That's true--you definitely feel sorry for Heathcliff in a way that you don't for Cathy.
Giles Winterbourne in “The Woodlanders” is a kind and tragic character. A bit comparable to Sydney Carlton in the altruistic path he chooses to follow.
I've got the feeling I would love the Woodlanders and hearing a comparison to Sydney Carton makes me really want to pick it up!
I can't believe Dorian Gray didn't make it LOL jk
Dorian Gray is actually one I forgot! 😂and Basil.
