That encore song is hands down my favorite when he plays it acoustic. I remember the first Flatop Friday he played it and it blew me away then as it does now.
And George modded... because he wasn't happy with the pickup performance. These were very early electro acoustics and Gibson didn't really know what they were doing on that side of the instrument. George eventually fitted the pickup across the sound hole and nearer the bridge. I love the confidence of that... $2500 in todays money ( £170 in the early 60's) and it wasn't right. So he changed it. P90 buzzing also - again an issue with volume on those pickups. Things weren't all great back in the day. Having said that, I have a Gibson J45 2018 in Vintage Sunburst and the tone un-amped is glorious and enough to fill a small room. Its a thing of beauty.
How brilliantly appropriate that Lemmo did Beatles songs on that guitar. His version of day in the life , might just be my favourite cover of that song. Up to now it’s been Jeff Becks version, but that was wonderful!
I used to think Lemmo just knew what music Fenders wanted to play, but in this video he shows he can read Gibson flatops just as well. Thanks for another great performance.
Minus the 60 cycle hum, that has a WAY more pleasant sound, and is a much nicer amplified facsimile of an acoustic guitar than what the first two to two and a half decades of under saddle piezo pickups provided us with. Not perfect, but zero ugliness. Nice playing too, Mike. Very cool!
Michael you are an amazing player. I still say you need to contact the television and movie industry about writing and performing music, besides doing your own thing.
Oh Man, this guitar is sweet. I don't have Beatles money or I would buy it in a heart beat. Sounds so sweet. Love is model. Great Beatles songs as well. Great playing!
I like how that pickup is integrated to look like it belongs there...not one of those numbers that goes over the sound hole like an afterthought. Sounds amazing, and of course Lemmo just accentuates it, as usual!
I used to come to this channel to check out the beautiful guitars, I know come here to hear Mr Lemmo play the beautiful guitars !! Michael if your playing can't sell these guitars, nothing can. Awesome work !

It's such a pleasure to listen GOTD. Lemmo you are truly amazing. He makes you want to be like the dude in the old Maxel or Memorex tape ads. Where the dude's hair is blown back and wine glass being pushed off the table, as he's sitting in front of his speakers.
This dude is fire on the guitar. Very talented and gifted. For the record john and George got their J-160e’s in 1962 not 1964 and no Paul never got one, he opted for a Epiphone Texan and later a Martin d28. Very cool looking guitars tho, i got one myself.

The description of the pick up explains a lot about how it sounds when plugged in, how it is kind of difficult to distinguish between it and one of the Beatles’ electric guitars. The amplified sound is like Paul’s Casino in the neck position. This was before the acoustic/electric guitar as I’ve always known it (being born in 1980) came into existence. The manufacturers were still learning how to amplify a guitar like this differently from an electric guitar. The standards were still emerging.
John and George each got one in 1963 and used it on the first album a lot. But also, the famous intro to I feel fine was played by Lennon on this guitar
Watched this before bed last night and the way he ended off playing in this vid sounds a lot like lucid dreams by juice world with the major to minor drop. Just found that interesting due to the news today
That's Gibson's 2nd (or possibly 3rd if you count the ES-150 Archtop Acoustic Electric Guitar) Acoustic-Electric Guitar. Gibson's 1st flat top Acoustic-Electric was a CF-100E.
Here’s some info for Norm : John and George got their J-160e’s in 1963 with John getting a replacement for his in 1964 from Manny’s in NY as his original was stolen in the UK before their first US tour in “64”. Paul also bought his RH Epiphone Texan at the same time. Paul had a RH J-160e square shoulder version in the early 70’s.
This were solid spruce tops. The Beatles Jumbos were ladder braced with laminated top. McCartney usted an Epiphone Texan in natural finish which also had an adjustable bridge but no pickup.
Really sweet sound. The J-160E is kind of a strange guitar by today’s standards. If you go by looks, it’s an acoustic guitar with a pickup in it. If you go by sounds, its basically an electric guitar that doubles as an acoustic. It’s all about that plugged-in tone IMO. Anyway, cool video! Dude plays great!

Hey, what strings are recommended for the 160e? I've always been told and always keep nickel strings on my 160e, needed for the pickup. Is that true? I really dont like the sound of nickel strings even though it sounds just like John's do on the earlier Beatles recordings.
Love your work on Guitar of the Day Michael. I would love to hear you use that looper to do your take on the song Dramamine by Modest Mouse. Also, if you could find some more Guilds to show (acoustic or electric), that would be awesome.
1. And I Love Her- The Beatles
2. A Day in the Life- The Beatles

You can tell lenmo is just an honest genuinely good hearted guy.

Also lemmo is one of the nicest humblest people I’ve ever met. It was seriously an honor to shake the guy’s hand.
I hope Lemmo uses this platform to go onto bigger and better things. A real talent 😎
melciveng : agreed - reminds me, for some reason of Jason Isbell- two guys with phenomenal talent.
Putting a P-90 in an acoustic was a genius move.
How brilliantly appropriate that Lemmo did Beatles songs on that guitar. His version of day in the life , might just be my favourite cover of that song. Up to now it’s been Jeff Becks version, but that was wonderful!
That's one of the better J-160Es that I've heard, that's for sure. That pickup is sweet.

Don’t worry Norm! Maybe I can afford one of these guitars when I’m 64!
Sublime! What beautiful sounds Lemmo makes and shows what these instruments are meant to make.
Great tone like Norm said and all the way through the dynamics sa wheat! There is a very noticeable hiss though that you can’t ignore.

That guitar has everything I could ever wish for. Wow! What a jem. What a sound. Fantastic playing Lemmo. 👍👏
Man that sounds good!
oh yes! What a nice full sound
When I hear an instrumental version of A Day in the Life I think of Jeff Beck. My favorite concert I've been to and my biggest influence on guitar
I too would have liked to hear the guitar acoustically, but still terrific playing. Through the pickup it sounded more like a super 400 type guitar.
Beautiful.
According to Mal Evans, John Lennon's J-160E was the backup for his Rickenbacker 1963-64.
Lennon used his Gibson in many of his studio performances, his rickenbacker minus a few exceptions worked more as a touring, live instrument
I'd recommend replacing that pick guard before it shrinks anymore and causes severe damage.
Just. Wow
Phenomenal
Nothing you can say but Wow😍
