  • After more than two years of development and testing the ADSB alarm for RC plane and drone flyers is almost ready to go. I will be posting the full build details including an SD-Card image, source code, wiring diagrams and STL/DWG files for the case to the RCModelReviews website in the next week or so. This is a totally open-source project which I give freely to the hobby community so as to increase the levels of safety associated with our activities.
It is through the use of this technology that we can show how taking practical steps towards ensuring safety is every bit as important (if not more so) than blindly following regulations written by those who have probably never even flown an RC plane or drone themselves.
If you wish to support this project and my other work to promote, support and protect the hobby you can use the "thanks" button below this video, become a channel member / @xjet or pledge a little via Patreon:

My hat's off to you Bruce. The ADSB alarm makes far more sense that anything the govt is spewing out. The alarm will be ideal for our club that is in the middle of corn fields that get sprayed with crop dusters frequently in the summertime. Not only will the alarm be for the crop duster's safety, but for our safety so we can leave before they start spraying insecticide in the area.

    • @gpbarth
      @gpbarth ปีที่แล้ว +10

The crop dusters around here generally don't have, or don't use ADSB. We had one the other day seeding our mountain with tree seeds, and he flew back and forth past my house. FlightRadar24, which I use all the time, didn't even see him.

    • @travisfries

I seriously applaud your skills to create the ADSB alarm. I hope it also can be used in Australia. Another use would be for ultralight, paramotors and microlight aircraft which do not have to carry a radio or transponder for local flying. All the best, I will certainly send some financial support.

Thank You for doing this Bruce! I need this device. I had a very close call with a rescue heli that came around a canyon corner from out of nowhere and hovered for 5 min BETWEEN me and my drone, which was out over the ocean with nowhere to land. The heli soon landed about 50 feet behind me on the road where I was standing. I was able to scoot the drone in at very low altitude and landed it on the beach with 7% battery, just as the heli was landing behind me. It was the only space open enough for the heli to land to await the arrival of an airlift patient from an accident 2 miles down the winding coastal hwy. I monitor Flightradar 24 on a separate device and it never shows low altitude aircraft, the ones Im most concerned with when flying.

Brilliant, Bruce! The only option being to fly your late model DJI with passive ADSB and watching for a little arrow and notification. Open sourcing this product will practically guarantee some manufacturer will see the market opportunity, I'm SURE! Not going to build one, but would buy in a moment. Hopefully there are no potential legal/liability issues to delay things. When a low flying trio of Blackhawks appear over the horizon at 200' and 120 kts. you get maybe 2-3 seconds of audible warning. Not enough time to descend a commercial camera drone from 400', at all. This is not an infrequent occurence at my house. Handheld ADS-B *with an audible alarm* would be massively useful and practical. Cudos!

Nice job on the ADSB receiver!
I had one that was plugged into my laptop, and I used a discone antenna. The area covered was over 200 miles diameter, depending on height above ground, and it was displayed on a GPS oriented map! This was just a few years after ADSB was started!
You are right, there are many companies that block their aircraft on the public display of radar, including law enforcement for obvious reasons. But they can't do it from their craft, unless they turn off the ADSB box.

Everybody had to stop and wait then even once gone, we knew he'd be back after refilling his tank so, a real PITA. Seeing the same here. FR24 seems to be choosing to ignore traffic while the same receiver also feeding ADS-B Exchange shows everything. There's a medievac helicopter in my area that doesn't show up whatsoever on FR24, but ADS-B X sees it. There are many, many such helicopters in my area but only that one, not even a busy one, that has managed to not appear on FR24.

Can't wait to build one. I just (finally) got a hold of a Pi Zero W.
Pi 4 models are still mostly unobtanium.
I think civil authorities can turn on/off their "visibility" on flightradar24. We have a local sheriff copter that only shows up occasionally and when they do it's spotty, like they only "ping" once a minute or something. It's not altitude as other copters in the area show up properly even right up to landing.
We also get military aircraft flying by on occasion and the flightrader24 visibility is hit or miss.

This is something totally worthwhile, I think it should be made mandatory for every airborne device over a certain weight. I'd also say that any airborne device that doesn't have an ADSB transmitter should be limited in height as well as operating distance from its control station. What those numbers should be I leave up to people that know the ins and outs better than me. We should all be able to partake of hobbyist/intellectual pursuits but have a framework that ensures safety for all. Let's face it, if someone has the money for a manned aircraft, the cost of an ADSB transmitter has got to be chump change in comparision, and if it isn't, let me know and I'll design something.

Just remember, all these rules and regulations stem from the fear of seeing a quadcopter hover in-front of your window in the middle of the day when you are taking a shower and woke up from the sound of the quadcopter.
I know, it is completely unrealistic but this is about the standard argument I get to deal with on a regular basis.
And I can think up so many questions here. First would be the pilot, if they were to look inside your house with a quadcopter, Why not just walk up to the window or take a ladder with you? How do you wake up in the middle of the day during a shower?
TLDR, all these fears are unrealistic.
