    One thing I have found out in all my years of growing plants and I'm 70 years old now is that the closer than nodes are the better the chance of getting something to root. That first cutting you took is from a newer shoot and sometimes I found that they tend to want to rot rather than root sometimes. So sometimes it's better to take a cutting where the notes for the leaf scars are closer together. Also I found that a more successful taking cuttings during a full moon right before during or right after. It also works when planting seeds. And when is the highest tide at the ocean during the full Moon the Moon does have a pull on water on Earth. So I guess that's why it works there's some things like in patients that I take cuttings from and if it's during a full moon they usually don't wilt if it's not a full moon I need to put a plastic bag over them to help the humidity level so they don't Wilt and die.

    Based on my experience you don't need to do all of the extra work, I just cut mine on top of the node and put it in a water and that's it. I have mine in a vase, some are in a fish bowl with just water in it, been there for a year or so, along with photos plant. I just change the water from time to time sometimes every 2 weeks or longer. I placed it on an island counter top where there's no window and they are still thriving, the photos that I put in the same vase keeps growing longer with new leaves. I'm in Washington zone 8b.

    What if it's already super leggy, and there are only leaves at the end of the stems. All my stems are about 2' long and half an inch thick with leaves only growing at the last 6" or so..

    • @mleonard3163
      @mleonard3163 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      In case you never found any answer to your question, if your begonia has multiple stems then try cutting a single branch down to the height you want it. Root the cutting and then see if the old branch sprouts new leaves below the cut line. My begonia only had a single stem but has leaves the full 24 inches. Then again it's also been living outside almost year-round. It sits on my deck in full sun a good portion of the day in summer in California. Southern exposure with light and great reflected off the house. There are trees but they don't shade it much. It only comes inside for freezing temps at night or snow. It has been outside for as low as 33 degrees.

      Ohh, I figure it out! You have to take a cutting with at least 2 nodes (not just the leaf and a bit of stem) and put it in water..at least one nodr should be in a water, but if its more than even better. Hoped helped someone. 😊

    • @metasymphony
      @metasymphony 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can actually propagate from just one leaf with the stem cut off (and rooting hormone!) but success rate is lower than the method shown in this video. I’ve have 100% success with this method, but using only one leaf is like 50/50.

    • @Super7317
      @Super7317 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can definitely propagate with even just the leaf! Plant it directly in the soil. If you also have a bit of stem , you can either propagate in water or also burry it in soil , keep it nice and humid.

    • @saml8802
      @saml8802 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@metasymphony Propagating from leaves only work for rex begonias, cane begonias need at least some stem to work, but it's true that you don't need nodes!

    • @atherisGAY
      @atherisGAY ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is an old question but let me just answer it anyway to anyone reading it.
      I chopped my very long leggy polka dot back to the first two leaves to start over fresh and cut the cutting up into single/double leaf stems too and put them all in a vase under bright indirect light. They rooted super easily (no hormone no plastic bag) and I potted them next to the formerly leggy mother plant. I now have a super nice bushy pot of polka dots. All of them took to the soil and all of them have new leaves coming out.

  • @littlebeebs1

    Cool ! So you don’t have to let the cuts heal before you stick em in water ? I am having to repot mine cuz some odd fungus was growing in the soil and I was getting holes in the leaves . Didn’t see bugs . Even under the microscope. Dunno what the holes were all about. But the leaves were looking yellow and ugly anyway. Have you experienced holes in the leaves ? These holes are pinhole sized .

It has long canes and some leaves on top with just a couple below. I’m very uncertain about pruning it cuz if I cut off the top I’ll be left with a bare cane. But it’s healthy and beautiful. Nice leaves on top. I don’t want to kill it. Hmmmm. What to do

    THANKS. I have an Angel Wing begonia as well - there was one particular 'leg' that shot up pretty quickly - this is a simple countertop plant and the one leg was at least 3'. I was told to cut it at near the base and then use just the leaves to propagate - not a stem clipping, so I am worried now that I will have killed off the five clippings. I have them in individual pots right now...just planted. Hoping they take root. Is this a lost cause??

Someone left me a very sickly looking angel wing begonia on my front porch among my flowers last fall, I knew it was going to die but I vowed to try to get it through to the end of the season, imagine my surprise as I was able to carry it out at the beginning of spring the following year! Now at the end of our first full summer I have repotted him and he has even gifted me with beautiful pink flowers!
    My question is, some of his arms are quite long and some still have damage from his previous lifestyle....I want to help him, not hurt him, is there a better time of year to prune? And is there a limit to how much you should do? This is the first plant (plastic ones included) that I have not killed - please help me keep him happy and healthy! Many thanks 🧡💛💚

    My sister gave me a cutting. I was showing someone the beautiful begonia and when I lifted the leaf it broke off at the stalk leaving me with just a simple lone stalk. Will it grow from this state??

    Hi Julie,
    I am having a tough time propagating my begonia in water. It looks promising for about a week and then the stem begins to rot...also having no luck with leaf propagating method, leaves rot there too.
    I am new to begonias so any info would be much appreciated.
    I also hail from CT,
    Joann

    Hey Julie! I've already grown roots in water and just potted my cutting. Would you still recommend putting the plant inside of a plastic bag for a humid environment after you pot? Or is that too much? I'm out of town for about 4 days and don't want my new cutting to die.

    • @julienicole92
      @julienicole92  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So I have also potted up the cutting in soil with no bag or roots..and it did root after a few weeks, so the simple version worked too :)

    Hi Julie, great videos! I’ve just found your channel while searching for Angel Wing Begonia care tips. My mom just pruned hers and propagated the clippings to give to me (YAY!). She used the water method so I have the clipping back at my house sitting in water. I don’t have time to get it potted this weekend so I will have to do it next week. Do you have a recommendation for the amount of roots that would be too much or too little for transferring to soil? Thanks!

    • @julienicole92
      @julienicole92  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hmmm, well I actually experimented with this. I pruned by begonia, and transferred directly to soil, and it did fine! It grew roots within a few weeks. I checked by gently tugging on the cutting and it had rooted. So I would recommend trying this

    Hello! So I have inherited a 15 year old angel wing begonia and it hasn’t been pruned for quite some time. There are no leaves very close to the base, and it stands about 4 feet tall, all the leaves being in the top half. Should I prune back down or will that harm it?
