I drill a 3" diameter hole in ground, place a cardboard tube in hole, place leek in tube, fill with water and leave, top up with water as and when needed
I'm so glad I watched this video as this year is my first attempt at growing leeks. If I hadn't seen this, i'd be planting in 2" holes and filling the holes afterwards 🙃🤣
A pal of mine told me to make a very deep hole and I did for my leeks. Think I went 20 cm or more. I had long, white blanches on my leeks. The holes tend to fill up by themselves over time.
If you plant shallow you can put something round the leeks to cut the light out e.g. a plastic bottle with both end cut then wrapped in a section of compost bag. Or a section of downpipe.
Eyup Dan. I hope you're feeling better in the foot department. Thanks for your video some years ago about the clopyralid shite in compost because I now know that Aldi compost has murdered my tomatoes and cucumbers. I kept a weakling back and did not pot it on which is now my only decent plant out of the bunch. I know I'm going on like an undertaker who's lost his wallet but you get that on this channel sometimes. Your dad gave me that one on t'internet - I think he was talking about you actually 🤔. Good luck, keep going and I'll sithi after! Dave.
My first time growing leeks this year. Put them in a couple of days ago following your technique. Not sure if the allium leaf miner is in my area so I'm going to cover them just in case. One thing I noticed when you poured your water in your holes drained really fast. Mine took several minutes. Guess my soil must be quite compacted or have a lot of clay. Hopefully it doesn't cause a lot of problems with the leeks growing. Have to wait and see.
Not much you can do really. Just hope you don't get it. As long as you only get I when the leeks are a decent size it's not a big problem. Cheers Dan 😊
You make it all look so easy
I drill a 3" diameter hole in ground, place a cardboard tube in hole, place leek in tube, fill with water and leave, top up with water as and when needed
I've done that too. I save all my cardboard rolls.

@@nitelite78 I haven't time to cut up plastic bottles and wrap in compost bags!

Always cover them! Add lots of compost. I must have added tons of the stuff over the years. 15 tons? Loads of manure.
So as I am in australia.... when is the best time to start planning leeks?>
Nice one lad. Got mine in today, so looking forward to a good harvest. What do you do about the rust?
Not much you can do really.

Is it possible to drill all the holes in the ground and then just drop a seed in each and leave them to grow like that instead of transplanting them?
